  • Just as impressive as their lithium impact driver
Style: Grinder Tool
Initially I purchased the drill and driver combo pack that Porter Cable sells which uses the same exact batteries as this grinder. First impressions is that the build feels solid and durable. If you have ever used a corded grinder / cut off tool you will know that they are normally very loud. This is much less noisy while running in comparison to the corded ones. The noise levels while grinding on metal would of course be the same. The detachable grip can be put in 3 different positions, left, right, and vertical for flexibility. This includes the grinder, 2 cutting disks, 1 grinding disk, a detachable hand grip, manual, and the tool needed to change the disks. It also comes with two different guards, one for grinding and one for cutting. As the description for the product states, it does not include a battery so you either need to buy it separately or use the ones you already have from one of their other 20-volt Max Lithium tools. The tool does have a safety lock switch which will stay in either the locked or unlocked position without having to continuously apply pressure. One of the features that my driver and drill have is a battery indicator at the base where the battery is attached so that you can get an idea of how much battery is remaining. This grinder does not have this but I personally do not think this is a deal breaker. The tool has an automatic shut off feature when the lithium battery is getting low so that you do not destroy the battery. Overall I am very satisfied with the purchase and would certainly recommend it for anyone needing a portable grinder / cut off tool. ... show more

  • PC Customer Service sent me a new unit
Style: Grinder Tool
UPDATE - Long story short: I contacted Porter-Cable and showed them a copy of this review. All I asked for was if I could send it to them to see if they could take a look at it and see if it was just a bad unit. Well... they offered to send me a new one - free of charge (didn't ask for the other one back). Really didn't expect that. Tried out the replacement unit and it seems to work just fine. Doesn't stop or bog down unless you really press into it (which is what I kind of expect as opposed to a corded unit). The battery life seems acceptable, as well. Bottom line: I must have just received a bad tool. I'm satisfied with the way it turned out and I'm updating my rating to 5 stars. First off: I'm a huge Porter-Cable fan. I've got 3 other 20v PC tools (drill, impact gun and reciprocating saw) and they all work fantastic. This thing though... Even when pushed moderately hard, it stalls and it absolutely chews through the battery life. My other tools? I can push them hard for quite some time before needing to change batteries. I don't know what the deal is with the angle grinder. I've had it too long to return it and it does have its uses (like if you want to cut an aluminum can in half - don't try to cut it into quarters - it won't make it, LOL). My experience doesn't seem to be typical, though. Maybe I got a bad one, or something. ... show more

  • Great grinder,good price,indestructible
Style: Grinder Tool
Great grinder, got this grinder to take out in the junkyard to remove rusted bolts, cut off lug nuts and remove leaf springs shackles.I also used the grinder, all day today for volunteering work, put on a 36 grit flap disc on the porter cable to remove all the paint off 7 large metal handrails,at the county park, for new paint.Used for 4 1/2 hours straight, with one 25 min break for lunch. It used drained two 5 amp hour batteries. It worked great,no overheating,no power loss, great power, the paint was very thick and was several coats,so I had to put some pressure on the tool at times,it just chewed right down to bare metal.Very impressed with battery life and the power for a $50 angle grinder.Very comfortable to hold for a long time, the bigger 5.0hr makes it nice and well balanced.Used 14 flap disc in total, crazy how it never got to hot even in 80f temps,I LOVE THIS GRINDER,thanks amazon and porter cable ... show more

  • Works as expected
Style: Grinder Tool
Does it have the power of a 110V machine? No. Does it have good power for a 20V machine? Yes, very good! Used mine for cutting to length an existing culvert that has been in the ground for years. The end had been run over and partially crushed, so it was not a simple cut. It involved a lot of crazy angles and layers of metal overlapping each other. It fully consumed one charge of a 4AH battery, but cut very well. The handles felt good and I never felt any lack of control or danger while using this tool. When an outlet is available, I will use my corded device, but this will get the job done in remote environments! ... show more

  • Cutting Concrete Like Butter!
Style: Grinder Tool
I've always wanted one of these and have other Porter Cable battery driven tools, so I can swap batteries accross them. I was skeptical I could cut concrete with this in a very tight spot (I had never cut concrete with an angel grinder before. It cut like butter with the Diamond Blades I ordered to go with it. Other blades were included. I also needed to cut a piece of copper pipe down it's length. With this tool what would have taken an hour got done in about 20 seconds and the cut was incredibly clean.. :-) I rated ergonomic, manuverability and portability at 4 stars as I wished it had allowed me a bit moore depth of cut and the handle was in the wrong place for my needs.. This may not apply to norm use. All in all- Worked Great! ... show more

  • Great battery powered grinder!
Style: Grinder Tool
I really like this porter cable grinder. It fits with the other 20V PC tools I have. Though it needs a big battery. Get something like the 5AH or more to use it for a good amount of time. If you need to use a grinder all day, get a corded one. This is really for places where you cant plug in or quick cuts. Like most grinders I have seen, the tool used to tighten the disc on is just a bar. Not terribly easy to use. Personally I want to find something better. It comes with 2 different guards, one for flap wheels or thicker discs and the other for thinner ones. Both are good and easy to install. The only thing that might be a problem over time is the Stop button so you can keep the disc from rotating for tightening. Its not a very positive stop so it might be a problem after a lot of use. But for the price, you can just get another one. ... show more

  • Top value in cordless grinding by far.
Style: Grinder Tool
When I pulled out my Porter-Cable grinder (equipped at that time with 3" cut-off blade) to make diagonal cuts in a piece of metal roofing for a valley installation, my buddy said, "Forget it--my DeWalt won't make those cuts." I went ahead, and to his amazement, made half a dozen diagonal cuts quickly and cleanly--all with a single 1.5 amp-hour battery. He was genuinely impressed, and said he couldn't believe that it had such power. Power and light weight are probably the most salient features in this line of 20-volt tools. Porter-Cable is to be commended on their design. Now that the 4 amp-hour batteries are finally available, they are even more attrctive. i plan to use the larger batteries in the circular saw, grinder, and tiger saw, where the extra life should be helpful. I find I get impressive run time on the little 1.5 amp-hour batteries on all the other tools. BTW, i find it confusing that people downrate a tool because they failed to read the specifics of the offering. Guys--if it says "bare tool", that means you have to buy the battery and charger separately. This is often a convenience for contractors like myself who already own a number of batteries and chargers. It is in no way a reflection on the tool if you failed to read the specifics of the offering. ... show more
