I appreciate how capable this portable handheld welder turned out to be. The machine is lightweight and compact, but it puts out plenty of power for small fabrication jobs, repairs, and general metal work. I’ve used it on mild steel for brackets, small frame repairs, and garage projects, and it handled everything like expected. The craftzone hand held welder is the hot glue gun for metal. Do Not Expect this to compete with a 50A garage stick welder. It won't, but if you use a 1/16 welding rod, you may actually have something nice to pull out for a quick job that can be run off an extension cord anywhere. It did not weld 1/8" rod for me even though it says it can. I was able to get a few tacks, but nothing like a bead as needed. Mine came in a nice case that looks too good for a piece of garage equipment, but I appreciated it. The ground cable seemed as good a quality as most other welders I have had. It did not come with any welding rod, so source your own. Now why doesn't it weld like it says? physics. 1/8 rod uses about 25 volts and 125 amps to weld. If you convert 120vac 20 amp outlet to max current at 25 volts DC you get about 80 amps. And most people have a 15 amp outlet. So 1/8 rod is out of the question. But for 1/16 rod that uses about 60amps this thing should work just fine. Good for portability, but note the constraints.

Basic welding is a great upgrade for DIYers and this entry level stick welder is a great first step towards adding welding to one’s bag o’ tricks in a small home or workshop environment. Welding can often offer better alternatives via metal than when one would otherwise attempt from the use of wood (or plastic, etc.) Brackets, metal furniture, fabricated tools – the list of things that can be repaired or built with a welder is endless. It’s a small step with a new tool with a big reward potential. This unit is so easy to use it takes most of the mystery of stick welding out of the equation. It’s got a 3 prong, 120 volt power cord for standard receptacle (in USA), a metal brush, a grounding cable/clamp (for attaching to workpiece or metal table), and a place for the welding stick. That’s it. Plug it in, attach the grounding cable, insert stick, turn on, set mode, and get aweldin’ (while of course using proper safety gear and properly following safety protocols and requirements). For practice before making the video (attached), I went to a metals market and purchased some ¼ inch scrap along with some 1/8 inch E6013 (general purpose/mild steel) metal welding sticks (called “electrodes” technically). This welder (based on the user manuals’ electrode specifications) is not recommended for joining pieces of metal that are thicker than ¼ inch each (for a total of ½ inch thickness). It is also ideal for sheet metal (in which case a thinner E6011 electrode would be best). No electrodes are included with the welder. The welder has three modes: Manual, Hot Start, and Arc Force. Each mode can be modified with the current knob. (More current for thicker metals is the rule of thumb.) I found that Hot Start is needed in the beginning to force more current to prevent the welding rod from sticking (sticking is caused by the flow of current being too low so the metal “freezes” too quickly, snagging the electrode). When the rod is shorter or the metal thicker, Arc Force seems to insure more consistent pooling of the metal, and less sticking (but doesn’t work as well on cold metal that needs a higher boost at the start to heat up). Manual Mode requires more experience to use, generally speaking. Welding can be an art requiring skills, no doubt. You can develop a feel for how to move the stick and set the current and otherwise prep and grind and so forth, with practice. But with a little bit of trial and error (with safety equipment and proper technique and protocols) you can realize the attraction of using molten metal as veritable “glue” to bond metal parts together in a manner that will stand the test of time and endure the rigors of stresses and strains. Welding is both fun and useful and this is an easy unit to use. It is a great way to get started welding for a novice or intermediate user with basic welding needs.

This Portable Handheld Welder is an excellent choice for those who enjoy tackling DIY projects. While it doesn't include any electrodes, this omission isn't a significant drawback. There are a few aspects of the machine that contributed to my decision to lower my rating slightly. Firstly, the welder itself is impressively robust and well-constructed, feeling surprisingly lightweight when compared to my Harbor Freight portable welder. One of the standout features is its quiet operation; the fans only activate when the welder is in use, allowing for a serene working environment. The device offers three distinct settings, catering to a variety of welding needs, making it versatile for different tasks. However, I did encounter an issue with the electrode clamp button—if pressed all the way down, it can become stuck in the lowered position, which could be frustrating during use. On the positive side, the included carrying case is a thoughtful addition, enhancing portability and ensuring that the welder remains protected when not in use. The grounding clamp is also well-designed, featuring copper mesh to maximize the surface area for better conductivity. That said, the welding wire brush included with the kit is poorly constructed and struggles to effectively remove slag from welds, which can be a significant drawback for those looking for a cleaner finish. In summary, for the price point, this handheld welder is difficult to surpass in value, and I would recommend it for occasional use. However, if you find yourself welding frequently, I would strongly advise investing in a better model.
