I ordered my first Pop and Lock tailgate handle directly from the manufacturer back in 2009 for my 2010 Tacoma PreRunner (with backup camera). The tailgate release lever (hook) arm recently broke and I opted to replace it with a newer model. I use my truck bed a lot so I’m constantly opening and closing the tailgate. This being said, I feel that the first lock lasted quite a while considering the heavy use of something made out of plastic-type materials. FIRST IMPRESSION: The first thing I noticed about the newer model is that it is totally redesigned. The key tumbler is now located on the left hand side of the unit and the backup camera slot is located on the right. All of the internal working mechanisms have been redesigned compared to earlier model and it worked very smoothly out of the box. The accompanying instructions are very good, however, I recommend going to Pop and Lock’s Website to view the instructions and excellent illustrations for your particular vehicle. MINOR INSTALLATION/OPERATION ISSUE: The installation process for the new model is pretty straight-forward and easy—providing the installer follow the how-to instructions exactly. However, I experienced an interference issue with the tailgate release lever (hook) binding under my tailgate handle OEM backup camera holder. After I completed the installation, I closed and opened the tailgate a few times to check if I had done everything correctly. I lifted the tailgate to the closed position, turned the handle key to the lock position, and pulled up on it a couple times to make sure the lock was secured. I tried to unlock the tumbler using the same key but it would not turn to the left (unlocked position)--the handle release lever would not disengage. Upon closer inspection and examination of the locking mechanisms, I found that the release lever (hook) was lodging under the OEM camera holder housing (next to the lower left mounting bolt) every time I would pull up on the handle after locking. SOLUTION: I fixed this minor problem by removing the camera holder from the Pop and Lock handle and then filing away a small amount of the plastic material around the camera holder mounting hole. After making this ‘minor’ modification to the camera holder and reinstalling everything, the Pop and Lock and tailgate works flawlessly. NOTE: The problem related to the camera holder and not with the Pop and Lock unit. OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is the second Pop and Lock I’ve purchased and I think the product is very good and useful. Yes, the first one I purchased in 2009 broke but it did its job while it lasted. This product is very easy to install and it works very well. I am rating this product with five stars solely based on previous experience and I trust that the newer model will do its job as well. FINAL NOTE: I’ve always had a lockable hard-top Tonneau cover and a Pop and Lock on my truck. I feel that two locking mechanisms serve as a “deterrent”, but not a cure all. Yes, I am fully aware of the Thief’s Creed: “If I really want it, then I will find a way to take it.” I’ll just say that a two lock tailgate combination has served me well; especially considering that some areas I travel often expose my truck to break-in opportunities.

When I put a tonneau cover on my truck I had to change out the handle on my tailgate because my model truck didnt put a locking mechanism on it. I did the entire project myself. It was very easy to swap out. Its working great so far, Im just a little concerned how it will hold up over time being made of plastic. I wish these were made of metal.

4 stars because the box was slightly open, the product was not securely packaged, small amounts of grease found on the face of the product and it is slightly less sturdy than the OEM handle I took off. However, all of that aside, installation took less than 10 minutes, and it works just as it should. It came with 2 keys that function and it looks great. Due to reviews that the handle breaks (which I can see may be an issue in the future due to the amount of plastic making up the bulk of the mechanism) I purchased a protection plan which was pretty cheap, although 80 dollars for the product itself is a little steep, but it is a name brand so I am not surprised. The product does not rattle when I am driving and it fit perfectly on my 2005 Tacoma, matching up with the 2 OEM bolts that held the previous handle in place. As far as security, the lock keeps the handle from releasing the latches on both sides which is the goal. All in all, 4 out of 5 stars for this product. Packaging was disappointing and the price was pretty high. 50-60 bucks would have been fine. I would recommend this product if security is something you value for your tailgate.

We had our tailgate stolen from our truck in front of our house, even though we have insurance, we still had to pay the $250 deductible. This was easy to install after looking at the manufacturers video. It only took about a half an hour to install. Hopefully it deters other thieves.

I wrote an initial review of this thing in Sep of 14. I am now updating that review after a year and 11 months at which point the part has failed. Good: Installed on 2012 Tacoma. Toyota should have made the Tacoma with a locking tailgate; another retarded design move we'll never have explained. So the fix is one of these things. I was initially VERY skeptical - expecting shoddy quality, bad fit and errors in the directions. In fact, it fits perfectly and the directions are 100% clear & correct. The quality of the plastic indeed poor however. (Be advised the local Toyota dealership will install a locking mechanism for you. They use THIS exact part as there is NO TOYOTA tailgate lock and, I was quoted $400 to have it done.) The actual swap-out is very easy. My 2012 has Torx #30 bolts which hold the tailgate cover on. I also used a 10MM socket for the four bolts in the lock itself. Two of these hold the thing in place while the other two are for the camera. The camera worried me the most and it was the easiest part of the whole thing. No cutting, disconnecting the camera wiring or other BS. Bad: I'm an Amazon fan but the Amazon descriptions are very often wrong. That is the case here. Part number 5500 does NOT have any feature allowing it to magically mate to your truck key. It comes with a pair of small keys. What you really need to know: At 23 months, this thing fell apart. I never abused it and it was minimally used. The failure: cylindrical plastic mounts which anchor the steel attachment bolts simply cracked and disintegrated leaving nothing to hold the thing in place. The plastic is cheap and for $65 on Amazon, I say not worth it. I re-installed the stock, no-lock part.

The tricky part was reconnecting the 2 latch rods... Be sure to put the colored clips in, then the 90 degree bend into the hole , then snap the clip! AND don't forget to put the factory seal in 1st! All good and the best price to the tailgate licking latch! Took less than an hour start to finish. Great seller fast delivery. 4:20 AM!!! maybe too fast? Maybe! Color I a match, the value is 100% and the ease of using the tailgate now, did not change! The Tailgate locks and my folding top and all my bed's contents are secure!
