It's been a robotic summer for me. We received our Rhomba indoor vacuum cleaner a couple of Christmases ago, so when robotic pool cleaners became available, I had to try them out. What I found is that some had wheels, some had tracks like tanks have. They all claimed to be "smart" but in the end, the results seemed pretty random to me. I have a 24' round above ground pool that's about 10 years old. Unlike in-ground pools, the bottom is heavy duty vinyl, so its not unusual to have roots grow underneath as well as for the ground to give way in some areas. The result is a "moonscape" of hills and valleys interlaced with running ridges. It doesn't take anything away from the enjoyment we've had swimming, but the unevenness can mess with cleaning and can be a problem for some bottom cleaners. What I've found is the bottom crawlers with wheels get stuck in the valleys or can't get over the hills! Even some of the expensive ones can't stay the course. And they all need recharging. That means hauling them out of the pool every time I need to clean it and waiting several hours for it to charge. On one occasion, I had to resort to my old electrical unit and was reminded of how convenient these corded cleaners are. I've had a Polaris Dolphin E10 cleaner for several years, but it is beginning to show signs of wear -- the floating electrical cord is disintegrating -- which is a bit concerning. But after using these rechargeables this summer, I'd forgotten how easy it is to have a bottom sweeper I can just throw in the pool and let it run. Since the rechargeables are a pain to keep them running and the "smart" features haven't been everything they've claimed, I started thinking about another electrical. I've grown to respect the Polaris brand, they've been at it the longest and build a good product. So when I saw the Polaris P70, it looked like a good replacement for my tired Dolphin. This baby has track wheels like tanks have so can handle the hills and valleys of my older above ground pool bottom. It's electrical, so I can just toss it in any time -- its always ready to go -- and best of all, will run a full two hours before shutting down. That's twice as long as its predecessor. There's no fancy mapping or wall climbing, but after two hours of random travel, it picks up about everything that's sitting on the bottom. It has a powerful suction and a large catch basket that can hand larger debris and the finer stuff too. The clear see-through cover lets you know how much and what its picking up as well as when it needs emptying. To make a long story longer, let me just say I've tried the smart bots and was disappointed. I'm sticking with my old school corded bottom vac that's always ready to roam by a brand I'm familiar with. You can spend more...a LOT more. But for dependability this sweeper has plenty of capability and it's built by Polaris, a brand I know I can count on.
