  • Absolutely Astounded
When I first purchased this amp, I was very hesitant due to it's lack of in depth reviews and it not being a product from a big name brand like Pioneer, Alpine, or Kenwood. Let me tell you something, this amp KICKS BUTT. After weeks of researching, I decided to run a JVC head unit (the KD-R730BT) with Monoprice.com RCAs, 2 sets of Infinity Kappa 6829CF 6x9 Speakers, some 14 gauge speaker wire, and this amplifier (sub to be added soon, will update review when I do). Just to be safe, I ran 4 gauge wire to the amp that I bought from a local stereo shop. Seriously go to the professionals to get your wire and fuse box, you never know the quality of the stuff you're going to get online and the LAST thing you want is your car burning to the ground. Run a 100A fuse and you should be fine with this amp. Pros: Price -- this amp is super cheap for the product and quality you're getting. Sub Gain Knob -- this amp comes with a subwoofer gain knob so you can boost your punchy bass while you don't have your mids and highs through the roof. Built in High/Low Pass Filters -- pretty much self explanatory, this amp has built in high and low pass filters so you can fine tune your setup to sound the best when you're running subs and mid/high speakers. Barely gets warm -- even under the seat of my Focus, this thing blasts away for hours without getting hot. It's a bit warm, but you can keep your hand on it even after playing it for a long time. Cons: Size -- while not too much of an issue, this product is a bit on the big side, especially if you're putting it in a smaller vehicle. I have a Ford Focus ZX3 (the little hatchback) and I didn't want to mount this sucker to the rear seat, so I threw it under the passenger seat. From there it peeks out just a bit, but nothing too bad. Things to keep in mind: -- Go with a good quality amp power wire and fuse box. -- Like another reviewer said, some of the switches are reversed, particularly the RCA input voltage switches. -- If you're rewiring your car speakers, to keep them at 2 Ohms make sure to run 14 gauge wire for anything under 20 ft and make sure to run 12 gauge wire for anything over that. -- Keep in mind this sucker is big, almost 20" long and 10" wide, so plan where you're gonna put it accordingly. I've had this product for about 2 weeks and I can't believe how I ever listened to my stock stereo. Absolutely the best thing I could have done to my car. In wrap up, don't be afraid when buying this product like I was; you'll be absolutely blown away (almost literally) by the quality of this product. In two words: It's awesome. ... show more

  • Superb Amp
This 5-channel amp is superb. The quality is high. And it sounds amazing. If you want a dedicated channel for your sub, which is a smart idea if you have a strong power-hogging sub, and you don't have the space or just frankly don't want to deal with a mono amp just for your sub, then this Planet Audio AC1800.5 would be perfect for you. My last sub fried my older amp when I connected it. It almost burned down my entire car, but I caught the fire before it spread. So, I realized then that it would be best to buy a well-made, powerful amp with a dedicated channel for the sub. I find the subwoofer level control on this amp pretty useless. It's a separate part that you can keep in your dash that has a cable running to the amp. All it does it control the subwoofer level. Most head units can do this alone, so this is a useless part for me. Otherwise the other controls on the amp are pretty detailed. You can adjust almost every aspect you can think of. The wattage is also plenty for most sound systems. It was a little difficult to install, but frankly most amps are in many instances. I installed this into my 1990 BMW 325i. The best place to put an amp in my case is to attach it to the back wall in my trunk. But man... it was an absolute pain in the arse! Myself and two others struggled to line up holes and drill through the metal frame behind my backseats. It was a huge relief when we got it installed. It would be nice if Planet Audio had a template to make vertical installation easier. Just FYI: make sure everything is connected and the amp sounds how you want it to sound before installing it, especially if installing at an awkward place in your car. It's cool how the logo lights up, too. I do think the manual could be written better, though: It fails to mention what kind of fuse you need for the power cable. You can consider this amp as pricey. But you get A LOT with the amp: a ton of controls and dedicated channels. Plus it looks cool and performs superbly. It's great for any genre of music: rap, rock, metal, jazz, pop, etc. The longest I ran this amp at any one time was about 4 hours and it never shut off. A good amp is VITAL for a dependable, great sounding car audio system. Planet Audio can help you get there. Overall: 4.5 stars which rounds up to 5. This puppy will last for many years. Thanks, Planet Audio and Amazon! ... show more

  • This 5 channel amp is perfect for old school audio guys on a budget!
This amplifier truly delivers and has all the features advanced audio tech demands. It is quite power hungry so make sure you have a remote interrupt and take your vehicles charging and battery into consideration, lest you be walking. But if you do it smart this amp will blow you away. I find that it allows pigtail connections to high pass which I was happy with, but do wish the gauge of the pig tail on high pass adapter would have been a bit thicker. I tinned the leads anyway but even so. I managed to tune this amp without the help of a meter so I'd say its design is intuitive and the high and low pass ability of the amp is superb. The dual on board cross overs eliminate the need for external, it can be bridged although with an amp this powerful you'll need to know what you're doing to run it fully bridged (pop goes the speaker). I found that if you use plumbing grade rubber washers under your mount surface and dynamat everything passing the amp you can get ultra clean sound. It took me a while to get the tuning just right, but the dynamic on board DSP in the JVC deck I'm using was more than enough to get the quality I want. I used 16g speaker wire, low sodium oxide copper, and I went from the JVC head out via high pass pigtails and wired all new speaker wire back to the speakers and the amplifier rather than using an LOC and existing cheesy factory wiring. It did involve removing the panels and fishing the wire, but I ran it down the opposite side of the passenger compartment door channels from the Power and ground leads, and grounded the amp gozilla style to the frame directly, and the sound is crystal clear there's not even white noise. Off the shelf Pyle blue woofers and a kicker pro-comp T box gave me everything I needed. I did have to call support once to confirm I had my high pass wiring and bridge set up correctly. Their techs were fast and on the ball. The best part is you might think I work for Planet Audio but I never even heard of them before. The last time I installed an amp like this was a Rockford Fosgate Mosfet back in the late 80's. ... show more

  • Good for what you pay for. But don't expect the Owners Manual to help you much.
It has enough power to really crank! I have it in my 01 f150 ext cab powering 4 nvx 6x8 speakers and 2 elemental designs shallow subs under the back seat with 4ga cables running power and ground. It is mounted behind the back seat back rest. This amp controls it very well, woke the speakers up compared to when I was running them on just the headunit! It seems like it gets pretty darn hot pretty quickly though (and I know it's mostly because there isn't much air space behind the backseat) so I added a small pc fan to keep constant air flow and that helped a lot, but compared to other amps I have had it get really hot. So far it hasn't shut off yet because of getting too hot. It is fairly large, but not bad considering its essentially 2 amps in one. The bass knob works well, I disassembled it and drilled a hole into the lower section of my dash to install it so that all you see it a knob sticking out, I didn't want the "look at me, I have a stereo" look for possible on lookers. Looking in my truck the only thing that gives away a stereo is the head unit, but most robbers won't touch it just for the head unit if they don't see anything else. This is the reason for the 4 star rating: I think the most frustrating part of this amp has got to be the Owners Manual! It basically just points at all the switches and buttons, not telling you what any do, just pointing them out. I think it was about 12 pages long, it covers 5 different amps in this series and 4 pages are blank for notes, so you get the idea. And the website isn't any help either. For someone who has been doing this for a while I think you can work it out, but being that this amps is targeted for the beginner/budget market it should give some description of what each adjustment does. So overall it's a decent amp. For the price, I don't think it can be beat it. I don't know if you can get a better 5 channel amp unless your $200+. It doesn't rattle houses, but then again my setup isn't made for that. ... show more

  • Not as good as it sounds
I just received my Planet Audio amp and was very happy with its appearance. But that's as far as it goes! I'm running 2 pairs of Alpine SPR-60C splits and 1 Alpine SWR-1243D subwoofer. Upon reading the specifications given on the Planet Audi site i thought the amp should have been able to run my speakers without too many problems. I was wrong. The amp kept cutting out (overload protection) when i turned the amp up to about 10% volume. I spent hours adjusting the amp but it still kept cutting out. The only way i could get it working was to only run 1 pair of split(bridged on the amp) and the subwoofer. It does sound great but i'm only running 3 channels. I think the true output is only 1\2 of the the stated output. Then there's the very small terminals. I dont understand why they are so small if the output is as stated. Can't get my 4gauge speaker wire in easily. lastly there's the covers on either end which look great but using a hex-key to remove them to get at the terminals is a pain. It is a great looking unit and running the 3 channels it does an excellent job i must say. ... show more

  • Its good. Don't wire it to a 1 ohm load and your good.
I have this ran to a homemade wiring harness using 9 wire in and out to the high level inputs. Factory head unit and factory door speakers. Door speakers are 20 watts @4 ohms. I'm running 1-8 inch planet audio 600 watt sub in a small sealed enclosure. With the crossover set on high-level for the door speakers and the gains all the way down, the sound is fantastic. The sub is wired to 2 ohms with no rca leads ran. Strictly high level inputs. Sub gains are set by ear. For a man my age, this is friggin awesome. Loud, clean, and clear. Strong bass.... just what I wanted with less than 300 bucks spent. I've never had it get hot, go into protect, or give me any problems. I'll eventually upgrade components. But for now. Its alright with me. ... show more

  • Oh man i hate to do this
Oh man i hate to do this. I am 48 years old and I am an audiophile. never been much into tv only music. so i know the planet audio name and for a lower priced amp they in the past have been really good. sooo just bought a 2015 ford focus hatchback se with the sport option. bad ass looking car but the sound system sucked. so i bought all cerwin vega speakers to replace the factory ones and a 12 inch cerwin vega sub with a ported box. i really didn't want to be heard 1 block away but i needed a 5 channel amp for my new speakers. kept my factory head unit. so every thing came in and the planet audio amp was so sweet. the packaging was bar none and so was the styling. the blue lighting on top was superior to any. so took this to an audio shop (CKR in Prattville Alabama) had everything installed and when they gave me the first listen after 7 hours i was stoked!!!!! wow!. so grinning ear to ear i started my voyage home which was 39 miles. i did not want to turn it up like they did because i wanted to give my cerwins a week break in. so i listened to my music at volume level 11. my factory head unit max is 35. so 9 miles into my ride home the whole system turned off. i stopped at the next gas station raised my trunk and the red light from hell was on. overload protection. so i got my bud to stand at the trunk and i turned off the ignition switch and turned it back on. the green light came on yes!!!!!! but only for a second, then back to red. when it first came on i could hear music for maybe 2 seconds then it would go back to red. this was on saturday. so monday after work went by ckr and i let them look at it and they tested all wiring and speakers and guess what?? all was fine but the amp was dead. SO planet audio if your listening i really want to love you guys but right now it aint going to happen. so do you trust your products enough to send me a replacement on the house to hook up and try out????? and if it does good i will totally give an updated review. so basically i am calling you guys out. lol ... show more
