  • Easy to Print and Very Strong
I have been printing standard PLA for awhile and wanted to expand my horizons by tryingdifferent materials. I saw this Carbon Fiber PLA and thought it would be an interesting trial. I printed the tool holder in the photos with my normal PLA settings (20mm/sec first layer, 45 for perimeters, 55 for infill, and 35 for solid layers) on a machine with a direct drive extruder and all metal hotend. Layer height was 0.2mm with a 0.4mm nozzle and an extrusion width of 0.5mm. I also sliced it with 2 perimeters, 3 bottom layers, 4 top layers, and 10% infill. The bed temperature I used was 50C for the first layer and 45C for the rest on a borosilicate glass plate with an application of glue stick. Bed adhesion was excellent without needing to try too hard to remove the finished print. See the photos for a look at how great the first layer lays down. For the extruder I used 240C which would normally be very high but I first tried printing with a hardened steel nozzle that requires more heat for the poorer thermal conductivity. The steel nozzle wouldn't print, but it wasn't the filament, the nozzle was junk. After switching back to a brass nozzle, the filament printed beautifully, just like a normal high quality PLA. The finish is a very flat black due to the Carbon Fiber, almost a gray to my eye, and the look and finish seem almost industrial, which suits me just fine. I did some very unscientific testing (attempting to bend and twist the print with bare hands) and the material seems much stiffer than normal PLA, and it takes a lot of force to break something printed with the Carbon Fiber PLA. While it may not be as flexible or temperature resistant as a reinforced Nylon, it is much more forgiving when it comes to printing, storage, and damage to your wallet! I will definitely be adding this to my stocked materials to use anytime I need a part that requires some structural integrity. ... show more

  • Pleasantly Surprised
I wasn't sure what to expect from the 'wood' filament when I placed my order. Since I've used other Sunlu filaments in the past and been generally happy I thought I'd give it a try. My first attempt at printing failed by clogging the nozzle, BUT this was easily fixed by upping the nozzle temp from 203c to 215c (a novice mistake). Since making that change it has printed like a dream! No stringing or awkward print issues. Just the clean vase you see here. I'm now about three hours into the obligatory "Baby Groot" print and it is looking great. I did sand and stain the original and it was almost effortless. If you're looking for Wood filament that is easy to work with, give it a try! ... show more

  • This is the third time, Just go with something else
Color: 2kg Black+black
This would be the third time that I have reviewed filament from SUNLU. The first time I left a bad review because I was unable to get the filament to adhere to the bed at all. After adjustments on my printer I was finally able to get things working, changing my initial review from poor to pretty good for the price. Now, buying their filament once more, I have run into a brand new set of issues that I cannot take blame for. Three times have I started a 2 day print, each time returning to the printer to find that the filament had jammed. The first time I though the extruder tension was took tight when pulling filament through. User error I guessed. Restrung, loosened the tension and tried again. It happened once more. Third times the charm I thought. Loosened it a bit more but the filament wasn't being pulled through. Tightened just a hair, and got things working again. Okay, third time. Left over night only to be met with disappointment when I awoke. Another "You Got Jammed" Long story short, its decent for the price but I would defiantly look to better filament for lengthy prints. This is not it ... show more

  • Attractive 'marblized' 3D prints. Some issues with breakage.
I own a few other Sunlu PLA filaments, and have found them to perform consistently and effectively. Of note, the filaments were white or gray, not exotic or special formulation varieties. Initial prints with this marble filament had some issues with clogs and breakage. I would attribute the breaks to complications regarding the clogs, just speculation. After raising the print head heat to 210 (from 200), the clogging and snapping issues disappeared. Either the temperature change did the trick, or possibly the filament issue was based on the initial length of the filament. I've encountered this in other 1kg filaments, where the outer wraps of filament had weird issues, and once I got past the first few windings/wrapping, the rest of the reel printed fine. Appearance of the print somewhat resembles a marble surface, expect to see some speckling of light gray, and some veins can form. Overall, a decent marbled effect, considering you're creating from filament. An interesting departure from the solid color filaments, and matches well with the provided descriptions and images in the product details. I feel it's slightly pricey, but seems filament prices are rising in general. I would definitely consider getting this marble variety PLA filament again. Accoringly, I feel this product is worthy of a high level recommendation. ... show more

  • So PROMISING! Did it "go bad" after only a few days?
Day 1, opened and printed a part and was very happy. Really cool filament. Day 2, swapped to a traditional PLA, placed this in a bag, put on shelf. Made up some "ear savers" for a friend. Day 3, swapped back to this and clogs, strings, misses. I tinkered with the temp, speed, no luck. Darn. Day 4, Well, maybe my hot end and nozzle are old. Installed all new parts. Still wont print right! Day 5, swapped back to more traditional filament, prints like a dream again. I was really excited for this, and even more so after that first print. They mention it's very sensitive to moisture, but 2 days and in a bag? That's not usable, I have prints that take more time than that to print. Maybe I got a bum spool, overall very disappointing. ... show more
