Description

Pet fountains help your animals to drink more water because they are attracted to moving water. In the past the only option you had for an automatic pet fountain was a plastic one. Now finally there is a ceramic pet fountain that looks like it belongs in your kitchen. Our ceramic drinking fountain is extremely easy to take a part and clean. It is 100% dishwasher safe and is made from heavy duty ceramic. There has never been a fountain that looks or works as well as this one does. For optimal performance we recommend that you clean the fountain once a week and disassemble/clean the pump once a month.

  • A great fountain for your thirsty pets !
I browsed online for several hours comparing PET FOUNTAINS before choosing this particular model - I am very glad I did the research and read all the fine print and other reviews (of both this unit and other designs) before making my purchase. This product has been a pleasure to own since DAY ONE. I haven't had a minutes trouble with it and it has been going strong for about 6 months now. My animals enjoy the bubbling effect of the upper level and drink both from the bubble and the 'waterfall' area more than directly from the bowl. I did see one review that mentioned it " was loud " - the only time this fountain makes the slightest bit of anything that could be considered as " noise " is when you let the water level get too low and the pump makes noise as it tries to pump the water. Keeping it at the recommended level , or just below, has resulted in a very quiet operation. The charcoal filters do need to be replaced every couple of weeks, that can get a bit expensive I suppose, but I think it is worth the investment to know that my pets are getting the benefits of the flowing water as opposed to a standard bowl. The porcelain design is very modern and sleek black. The entire unit does take up some space so you need to be sure you have a place to put it before you buy. The power cord detaches from the wall power adapter for quick plug/unplug of the unit when it's time for cleaning. The two section porcelain unit is easy to clean - You can sink wash or put it in the diswasher. The plastic unit containing the pump and filter is a little more difficult to clean but after a couple of times and you get the hang of the way the 3 pieces fit together - it only takes a few minutes and not a tremendous amount of effort. Overall I am very pleased with this unit and would highly recommend it to anyone considering a reasonably priced fountain. Depending on how you position the fountain on the floor, your pet my drink from it in a manner that causes water to spill over the backside of the top " bubbling " area. I had this issue with one of my cats and I placed the unit on a rubber mat to prevent waste on the floor. I found that placing the unit in a manner so that the animal tends to approach and drink from the front, rather than from the side or back also helped to eliminate the spillage. I don't consider this to be a design flaw as the fountain does exactly what it supposed to do. ... show more

  • Don't waste your money!
I bought this fountain to provide my dogs with clean, fresh water. Unfortunately, this fountain gets absolutely disgusting and has to be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned with hot, soapy water every other day. There are so many nooks and crannies where pet hair gets caught and it is slimy in two days! The rubber seal where the water bubbles and tube from the pump enclosure are small, narrow, and difficult to clean, and the entire fountain is quite heavy and difficult to carry to a sink for cleaning. Unlike other customers, the pump has lasted quite a while, but it is very noisy. I was able to reduce the noise by putting the fountain on a cloth placemat, but it is still quite easily heard even from a distance. I have also experienced leaks that other customers have mentioned. If the tube is not perfectly aligned with the rubber seal, water will end up all over your floor. Just a small bump is enough to push the tube out of the seal and make a horrible mess. You will also need to adjust the pump to prevent overflow. At the highest setting, water will flow over the sides of the top piece and onto your floor. I am thoroughly disappointed with the product and will no longer be using it. I can better provide my dogs with fresh water with a small bowl of filtered water that is easily cleaned, without the mess and noise. For those who still prefer a filtered fountain for their pets, I would strongly recommend purchasing a smaller fountain that is quieter and easier to maintain. ... show more

  • Look no further.
This is THE pet fountain you've been looking for. We had a plastic fountain for the last two years. Overall, I had no complaints. It *did* have some cleanliness issues though (it needed to be periodically scrubbed for algae, and the filter would clog with fur), and my cat did not help the problem because when she drank, she preferred to let the flow of the fountain flow over the top of her head. It only pooped out recently, and it might have been our own fault for letting it run too dry... but either way, once it pooped out, we started investigating ALL our options, wondering if just buying a new pump was really worth it... This new fountain does NOT flow in a way where she can get her head wet. It also is whisper-quiet. I hear nothing... the old fountain made a distinct bubbling sound, and even louder if it had a low water level. People were rather grossed-out looking at the algae build-up, which was only removeable to a certain degree. The new ceramic fountain will NOT be accumulating buildup in the same way, and it makes no bubbling noise at all. Best yet is how easy it is to refill... we just pour more water in, compared to the Drinkwell we had, where we had to remove the tank, refill it, and then carefully realign it without it spilling again. The pieces on this fountain are just so much more practical: two ceramic pieces and an easily-disassembled motor/filter. There were soooo many crevices on our Drinkwell that would clog with fur. Not so on this new fountain. I LOVE it. It's even attractive, and nobody walks in and says, "Hmmmm....what's that moldy looking plastic thing with all the gurgly water??" Update: The only criticism I have of this fountain is that it does not fully cycle the water. There are points around the outside of the bowl where there is water that seems to become somewhat stagnant if the bowl is not cleaned routinely. All fountains seem to have a "three week" or so time limit on filters, but on this bowl I would say it is even more vital. The bowl does accumulate algae, hard water deposits, and quite a bit of "floaties" around the outside perimeter of the bowl. When it gets to this point, the only "fresh" looking water is what is coming directly out of the pump. It is still a better choice than the plastic because it is easier to clean, but it does have some cleaning needs that are inescapable. Keep it clean on a routine basis and there will be no issues... Go longer than your 3 weeks or so, and you will have a pretty gunky looking bowl... Update-- Almost 2 years later: My pump *just* pooped out. Not too bad. I'm surprised to read reviews of all the bad pumps. I bought a new pump and I'm good to go. I still love it. ... show more

  • Easiest to clean pet fountain for sure Easiest to clean pet fountain for sure
This is one almost-perfect pet fountain! To compare, I currently have a Cat It Fresh and Clear Small Drinking Fountain - Cat It 50053 and a Petmate Deluxe Fresh Flow Pet Fountain Medium, White as well as a contraption using an in-tank aquarium filter and a ceramic casserole dish. All are currently being used by cats. I got the Big Max for our dog and a dog we started fostering. This fountain is basically two ceramic pieces, the bowl and the riser where the fountain emanates. A triangular plastic case with suction feet houses the similarly shaped filter and a pump, both hidden from view under the riser. Aesthetically this item does not look like it's for your pets but rather like an elegant desktop fountain. It's very quiet, with just faint bubbling noises. There are so few parts it's a breeze to clean compared to my Petmate Fresh Flow with all its pieces and sharp nooks and crannies. You'll still want a little brush to clean out the pump though, of course. I have a few bones to pick. First, I wish they offered it in white ceramic; that way stray lint and dog spit wouldn't show up as much. Second, I do end up having to clean it every other day because dog spit seems to persistently collect under the riser and float on the surface of the water, which is unattractive. So, in my situation the small filter may not be adequate. One thing I've done with the other fountains is to use additional homemade filters to keep the water extra clean. I use aquarium filtering material and sew it up into little pillows stuffed with activated charcoal. These pillows go into the water holding tanks and I find I can actually go 2-4 weeks without having to clean the fountains out. UPDATE (3 weeks later): I made the filter pillow and found it didn't work well hidden underneath the riser. I took out the Pioneer filter to try to increase the water throughput. IMHO, the filter is too small and the pump is undersized for the amount of water the fountain holds. The filter pillow now just floats around in the bowl and keeps the water clean enough for about a week. I'm considering rigging the unit with a slightly larger pump and not using the the plastic case (which could eventually harbor bacteria). UPDATE (4 months later): I swapped out the underpowered pump for a slightly higher powered version to get more water moving. This also meant I was able to lose the plastic housing for the pump and filter. I cut a small length of PVC tubing to go from the pump to the riser opening. Finally, I put a small ceramic egg cup over the riser hole so the water doesn't spurt out in a big fountain. With the increased GPM of the new pump, the bowl had to be shimmed in the back so the water flows to the front. The filter pillow I use can be hidden underneath the riser. The bowl still requires cleaning every 1-2 weeks, and it is still very much a pain to get the pump lined up with the riser hole. I may take a look at the Glacier Point water bowls - they are ugly but probably work well and also chill the water; I also saw Petmate has a new UV light watering dish that seems promising. ... show more

  • Has HUGE FLAW. Requires a lot of maintenance.
The "pioneer ceramic drinking fountain big max" has its uses on certain occasions but overall it is impractical. I have had the fountain for over a month. Don't get me wrong. The fountain is beautiful, relatively quiet, and so far I haven't had any mechanical issues. Just make sure the water doesn't go down too low because the pump needs to be working only when it is pumping water. If it is on and no water is being flowed into or out of the motor pump, it will likely die quickly. The MAIN critical FLAW of the drinking fountain is the following: clean up. I have to clean the fountain everyday, which considering I have to soak the motor in hydrogen peroxide since I can't get into the crevices, makes this a huge hassle. I have a Shi Tzu and a cat. They both drink from the water fountain. The cat is a relatively clean drinker. However my Shi Tzu puts her hair and mouth into the water after eating something. So the bowl instantly becomes dirty and filled with food particles and hair. The filter is not going to clean the water or keep it clean. It does relatively nothing after my shi tzu drinks from the fountain. The truth is I would be stupid and negligent if I didn't clean the bowl at least everyday. If you simply rinse with water and don't soak the motor parts in h peroxide or soap, you will likely develop a yellow slimy film. It will be difficult to clean around the crevices and impossible to clean the slime in the motor unit itself as opposed to the white plastic cover. The bowl is huge.Takes a long time to fill it. And is heavy when it is filled. This is not good for elderly people since I am in college and male and find the bowl heavy and clumsy. I have to be super careful not to spill the water from the bowl and also make sure not to drop it cause it seems to get slippery when wet. Regardless of whether you have a cat or dog, you have to clean this everyday which is a hassle. Bacteria builds up quickly and daily. With a normal bowl, it is smaller and easier to clean and fill with water. The amount of water saved compared to the big fountain may make a difference to some people. For example, the big ceramic holds a lot of water compared to a normal small bowl. When I clean the big fountain bowl I toss out all the dirty water in it and it's a lot. With the smaller normal bowl I had, the amount of water thrown away is way less and thus the amount of water needed to fill it up is less as well. *** The fountain has motorized parts which require cleaning and being dipped into a cleaner for 20 minutes. Must clean everyday. This is impractical and takes too much time/energy. If you clean every week or god forbid every two weeks, you are inoculating you precious pet with bacteria and pathogens. Don't be foolish! The best way to use the drinking foundation is on "special occasions" like on those days when you will not be home all day and therefore won't be there to fill and clean the water bowl. When you are home, I would recommend turning off the fountain and using the normal water bowl. *** I don't regret buying the fountain. However, if I knew what I now know, I would not have bothered buying the fountain. ... show more

  • love this fountain
This is a great fountain. Its VERY easy to clean. 2 minutes with a scrub pad. It holds an entire gallon. It looks good in my living room. Its very quiet and despite its size circulates all the water. Very easy to refill and see its low, and it can get very low before it stops pumping. If i have one complaint it would be the filter. Its surface area is very small, the plastic is probably unneeded, and the slits are small. There was also a good bit of scum on it and the pump. it doesn't really bother me as filters are cheap. I also saw a mod I might try. It could just be better designed. But the thing is... And to address negatives. I am lazy. I knew it needed cleaned. Badly. I walked past it and let it go. It took a month or longer to get this bad and the scum get in the pump. But its an aquarium pump. Yes it could "run dry" but it wont hurt it much its in a magnetic field, and if you pay so little attention to let your cats run out of water ... Well... And if it gets clogged up its REALLY easy to clean. It should be done every time you clean it. 5 minutes every 2 weeks? Come on. They should never "burn out" and really can't as there is no physical connection if the blades get stuck. And those pumps are cheap to replace anyway. Before you all jump on me for letting it get bad. I was about to clean it. But i have 3 fountains now, because my cat had a plugged urethra and drinking more should help. And he seemed to like the drinkwell platinum more (I also recommend it. Loves,it). I did not think it got used that much. But this morning all three cats, in short succession (all were stray kittens a year apart). Bothered to wander past this one dish.... Smack the water, and give me a mournful look... It had stopped running sometime last night. 5 minutes to clean the bowl and pump, back running with no filter. Ordering filters. Cats went right to it. SIDENOTE: If you have a male cat google plugged urethra. it happens suddenly, no warning, your vet doesn't warn you this might happen, your cat just acts weird. Mine just wanted to lay still and be obcessed with water. I had to pick him up to get him to stagger around. Ran some water in the tub he jumped in.... I thought he hurt a paw and was trying to clean it the way he was splashing there and dumping the water dish. He was just desparate for water and could not drink (I guess I am a dumbass) And they are dead in 24 hours... If I had waited till after work.... or waited for my vet because he was in surgery instead of finding another who could help.... Well... Dead cat. ... show more

  • Medium Max at best
I've read plenty of reviews where the motor dies right away. I didn't believe them. I'm now a believer. I had a DrinkWell fountain with the big reservoir for over 7 years and it's worked flawlessly. However, the plastic was started to get really slimy and even heavy duty scrubbing wasn't getting it clean. So, decided to switch to ceramic. a) The "Big Max" fountain should be called "Medium Max". It's not big enough for anything past a Lab / Golden Retriever. I have a Pyr mix and he'll drink 1/3 of it in one go. Once the it's about 1/2 to 2/3 empty it will stop circulating water and I was filling it up twice a day. "Full" is also very close to the lip and if you have a bigger dog you might get a lot of the slop. The DrinkWell has much higher sides. b) The motor died after less then a week. It never ran truly dry, but got low a few times where it was just a little trickle coming down. So, unless you're prepared to babysit the fountain and water levels it's not really worth it. I'd work on a return / just buy a new motor, but due to a) I'm just going to go back to the DrinkWell and work on cleaning it better. c) The Pioneer looks nice and I really like the ceramic. My roommate even commented on the "hippie looking" water fountain. So, if esthetics are your #1 concern then go for it. So, Pioneer, 1) make a true "Big Max" with higher sides and some sort of reservoir. Love the ceramic. 2) Lower your water intake in the clam shell to be on the bottom or switch to more of a inline filter akin to a Platypus hiking filter that could just snake around the back of the reservoir area. ... show more

  • At last a drinking fountain that is easy to clean
I replaced my drinkwell platinum fountain with this about a week ago. I have hated the drinkwell fountain with a passion but less so since they redesigned the platinum making it easy to take out the pump. But there were still lots of things I hated about it. (1) it is plastic and hard to clean properly without putting it in the dishwasher. (2) running in the dishwasher on sanitize shortens the lifespan of the plastic, but necessary to properly clean. (3) the reservoir of the platinum may be esthetically ergonomic but is a pain in the tukus to clean properly and I never feel that it has been cleaned properly (4) water gets splashed all over the floor when the dog drinks from it. I had it in the dining room sitting on an unused cutting board that had a groove running around the edge to catch water. After a period of time, the cutting board is black with mildew. So, on Christmas day when I saw the ceramic pioneer big max fountain on sale for $43.49 and Prime I quickly purchased it. It now sits in the kitchen where the dog's water bowl used to be on a rug with a rubber back. The fountain went together quickly and holds a lot of water. More water than either my chocolate lab and 4 cats can drink (that may change in the summer time). I realized after refilling the fountain once that I should just carry it to the sink for a quick wash every couple of days as the water quickly gets foamy and slimy with the dog drinking out of it. While it is a little awkward carrying the fountain to the sink with the two pieces, it is still preferable to the horrible drinkwell fountains. It is ceramic and easy to clean with absolutely no crooks or crannies that made the drinkwell so difficult to clean. It is ceramic so it won't ever get etched by bacteria. And if needed I can put both pieces in the dishwasher for a thorough washing. But unless I'm cleaning out the fridge and end up doing a light load in the dishwasher and have the bottom basket empty, I'll probably just wash the fountain in the sink with hot soapy water. Sooo much easier. The pump is easier to take apart too. I do however have a recommendation to the manufacturer. Beef up your filter so that it lasts longer. Drinkwell came out with a newer filter that actually lasts 3 months instead of the original filter's one month, so I know it can be done. ... show more
