  • Great set of pie weights
Size: 2.2lb
I selected the 2.2 lb set that is suitable for a 10-12 inch pie, which is the customary size I bake. I prefer pie weights like these for their uniform spherical shape (as compared to beans) and their ceramic material whereby the combined weight ensures proper blind baking without my crusts puffing/swelling up yet while also not leaving behind ball-like indentations in the crust like heavier stainless steel weights do. There’s an accompanying plastic storage case that is very convenient, neat, and helpful to use to measure out the proper weight based upon pie crust size. The weights were lightly covered in ceramic dust that was easy to remove by giving them a good initial rinse and letting them sit out to dry (or they can be dried faster on a low temp in the oven for 10-20 minutes) – the same process applies after using them each time to get them clean again, a little dish soap can be used as well if necessary. These weights can handle oven temps up to 480 degrees F, and overall they’re very easy to work with; also good for bread baking to create steamier conditions in the oven. The price point is inexpensive in my view for what you’re getting. I’m very pleased with these pie weights and got them at the perfect time as we enter the holiday season, and my home baking marathon begins! ... show more

  • Nicely made. Not enough for 1 pie crust. Has powder on it.
Size: 1.1lb
These are nicely made and come in a very solid plastic container plus a bag. As several reviewers noted, they do arrive coated with a fine powder on them. My guess is that during transit, the jostling causes some of the ceramic to come off due to rubbing. Given that I have never seen ceramic pie weights before, I wasn't sure if this is standard or if the weights are supposed to be coated to prevent that issue. However, on searching online, other pie weights look the same as these, so I guess they do not come coated, and the powder issue would occur for other pie weights if you have them shipped. Basically, they work as intended except that they are not sufficient to cover a 9" pie pan as the listing states. It is sufficient to cover the bottom, but not the sides. When I was looking to see what other pie weights look like, I found one that is 3.1 lbs and that listing said that that is the amount you need to cover a 9" pie, so live an learn. Basically, you need to get both the 1.1 and 2.2 pounds, which is probably why they are selling those 2 options. Some people might only want the 1 or 2 pounds, for whatever reason. Both would cost you $25. If you get free shipping, that is probably a comparable price because the 3 lb one is $17 but you would need to pay for shipping. With regard to one reviewer's comment that the container should not be plastic, the other pie weights that I saw online either didn't have a container or also provided plastic. There is no reason you cannot just set the weights aside to cool. If you used beans, you wouldn't have a container either, and you would still need to wait for the beans to cool unless you purchased a container that could hold a very hot item. In fact, you couldn't use a glass container unless it was tempered. Tempered glass is usually more expensive and will still heat up. A metal container would heat up and burn you. Your only other option would be a ceramic container, but you would still have to buy one. 1/2 star ding for the claim that this is sufficient for a 9" pie, so 4.5 stars. ... show more

  • Ceramic Beans for perfect pie crust
Size: 1.1lb
I have been watching a few cooking shows lately on You Tube and a few times now, they were using baking beans for blind baking. I had seen beans being sold in catalogs and online and knew they were for pies but didn't understand what they do or why until I watched these cooks use them. Oddly enough, one of the cooking shows was old black & white of Julia Child and she used the ceramic type. The other cook used dried legumes with a sheet of foil in between. I saw these on Amazon and what made me select this item was: 1. Reasonable price point for 1 lb ceramic beans 2. Included the storage bag + the plastic storage container 3. The site has a lot of useful information on how to use them After I received them, I wanted to make sure of the bean composition before using them - so I smashed one into a few pieces. The beans are thru and thru ceramic. No filler material coated. I am very happy with these and they arrived just in time for Thanksgiving pie! ... show more

  • If you love to bake pies from scratch
Size: 2.2lb
I have a killer pumpkin pie recipie made completely from scratch - no canned pumpkin either. The pie crust has to be baked for about 10 min before the filling goes in. Over the years, I have used all types of hacks trying to keep the crust flat during the initial baking period. Now I have proper weights to get the crust perfectly flat. I like the round shape which makes the weights distribute evenly. Better yet, this set of weights come with a nice storage container. I am only aware of using weights for pie crusts but I'm willing to guess they can be used for other purposes in baking and non baking projects. Treat yourself to homemade pie crusts - they taste so much better. ... show more

  • 2lbs. Pie weights in a storage box. Nice size, amount, and quality!
Size: 2.2lb
This would be such a great gift for the pie baker in your life, especially if they are still using beans! I have been using my ceramic pie weights for many years and decided it was time for a new set, passing my old set down to my daughter. I love that there are enough in this box to bake two pies which I often do. If you haven’t used pie weights before, be sure and line your unbaked crust with parchment paper so you aren’t picking them out of your crust. In addition, another tip is to make sure you give them a quick wash and dry to keep them from getting a weird odor. I usually use a strainer do this; keeping them all contained. I am very happy with this set and am looking forward to using them for my holiday baking. I definitely recommend getting a set or gifting a set! ... show more
