I bought this for my husband after he had surgery. He couldn't save with a razor over his Suture line once the staples were out. This shaver worked great. He was able to shave close to the Suture line with cutting it like a razor would. It's easy to use and charges well. It gives a good shave.

First impressions from shaving with the Philips Norelco Shaver 3800. This shaver has some good things going for it: -Easy to hold (feels good in the hand and light weight) -The razor heads do pivot and contour to the skin (confortable) -Can use wet or dry (seems like wet operation may be better) -Easy to clean -Replacement razor heads are not expensive Here's what I dislike: -Not a close shave -Does not feel powerful -Takes several passes to get a smooth feel -The actual product looks a little cheaper than the manufacturer's images of the product Conclusion: In my personal opinion, this is a good electric shaver for touching up when you don't want to (or can't) breakout a standard razor blade. You're not going to get a really close shave, but it might be good enough. If you have longer (or thick) stubble, you are going to be working at it for a while with this shaver to get it knocked down. It just doesn't have the horsepower. I bought this Norelco shaver after the battery on my 20 year old Norelco no longer held a strong charge. It is well-engineered and is a high quality product at a very reasonable price. It gives a close shave and I doubt that more expensive shavers can do a better job.

Although I have not used this for long at all, I've tested it in three different scenarios: 1. Dry Shave, 2. Shaving Cream in the Shower 3. Shave with Pre-Shave I would have to say that I was quite impressed in every situation. There was no irritation to the skin whatsoever shaving dry, and that was the first shave with an electric razor in over 15 years. So, my skin had no preparation. Using it in the shower with shaving cream gave a closer shave while using Ron's Natural Pre-Shave obviously gave the cleanest shave. My observations were that it does take longer to shave, but not by much if you consider that you don't need time to allow the shaving cream to soak in and having to clean up that mess afterwards. The second thing I noticed is that it doesn't get as close of a shave as a conventional razor, but almost as close. If you rub the whiskers against the grain, you might feel 5 - 10% more nubbles at most, but that depends on your own beard. I would safely say that all electric razors regardless of brand or price will provide similar results. I haven't used the popup trimmer, so I can't speak to that, but I would think it to be a plus for those who would benefit from it. It is a sinch to clean. Push the button to pop open the head and rinse it under running water. Charging can be done quickly, just 5 minutes if you find the battery fully drained. The razor feels good in the hand and easy to grip. It comes with its own charger, and the travel pouch is really nice. The good thing is that it has replaceable heads, so unless you drop it in the shower and break it, this razor should last many years. It is very thoughtful of the manufacturer to give you 45 days to try it out. I know I will keep mine. Why did I change from a conventional razor to an electric razor? There are a few reasons. I was running late to appear before some business colleagues on a Zoom meeting. In a rush to get ready, I nicked my face in several places. Some, like me can bleed for a while before clotting. I decided right then and there that I was going to purchase an electric razor. The second reason is that this will be cheaper in the long run. Third, I don't have to run to the store to get razors or shaving cream because I forgot the last time I was out shopping. Last, because I now can use a natural substance on my face without any harmful chemicals. I used Old Rons Barber Company Pre Shave Splash. A little pricey, but it is unscented and works great. The shaver cuts beard hairs very well, has a smooth feel to the face while shaving, resulting in a shave almost as good as using a blade. It’s easy to use and is lightweight. It charges fully in an hour or less. It is also easy to clean.

    • No real improvement to these shavers in 25 years?

I bought this to replace a similar model that I was given 25 years ago. That shaver is still on its original shaving heads and was also a lower-cost model. The main differences are that it's a plug-in model and its heads don't conform to your face as easily, but they're otherwise very similar. I think the main improvement this new model provides is that it's a little more gentle on my skin. However, it takes annoyingly long to get a good shave, no mater what technique I use. This is the main area where I'd hoped to see an improvement. I should note that I apply Lectric Shave fluid to my face, prior to using either model. Some other bad points: this model is more annoying to clean and broke easily when it fell on a wooden floor. One of the pins holding the shaving heads broke, so I'm not sure if I can even get a replacement part. Maybe I could use a small screw to hold it together, but since I wasn't happy with it before it broke, I probably won't bother. ... show more
