Overall I like the lamp. It works great for a small space and works seamlessly with my other hue products. What I don’t like is how I bought this “new” from Amazon (they were the seller) and it arrived with the seal broken and product not properly packaged. This is firstly a very expensive lamp, among the most expensive hue products available. So I really expected more. Starting with the good: like all hue lights, the software support both from Philips and third parties, is great. It's easy to install, comes completely assembled, just plug in, open your phone, and you're done in minutes. It's also very sturdy (I have the floor lamp not the table lamp). This is refreshing when compared with the LED strips, which seem to fail on me in various irritating ways fairly often. The light is.. adequate. I would prefer it be brighter, and in the two medium sized rooms I'm using these lamps I think it would really take two to adequately light the space. So there are a lot of cons, though. Firstly, if it's placed on carpet, it's hard to make it sit flat. This might not seem like a big deal, but the design of the lamp is such that you've got this big silver wand thing sticking up from the floor in your field of view. And if it's crooked, it just looks bad. They definitely could have included either a different base that anchored it to the floor and allowed it to be leveled, or they could have included (or made available) an anchoring system for attaching it to drywall. So the light is pretty good, but it's tricky to use in a way that doesn't look like it belongs in a teenagers bedroom. Which leads to a discussion of the light itself. It's harsh. There's no diffuser or shade, so you need to for example cast it onto a wall. But it's both not bright enough that the primary light would be reflected off the wall, and it's designed in such a way that when you look at it, you see light "coming from the side" of the lamp. The aperture should probably be a little narrower; the physical configuration of the lamp is actually distracting from the light it puts out. The light doesn't support any kind of cycling, which is frustrating, and it also doesn't support "gradient" the way the new hue products do (this is frankly mysterious, there's no reason they could not retain the same product and change the lights to the newer technology). As much as I really want to like these lamps and for them to be useful in providing a lot of programmable dynamic lighting to a space, I think it makes much more sense to use many smaller lights with a variety of shades, reflection, diffusion, etc. But of course if you've done this with hue before, you know the next problem is configuration, maintenance, device attrition, and finding enough outlets of the right type. The lamp works, it is syncing with the Sync Box, has no portions that do not light and appears to be in good order, but....it was a used or open box item. The seal was broken, instruction & safety pamphlets missing, cord was tied up with grocery bag twisties (you know the kind you get in the produce department to tie up the flimsy plastic bags with broccoli in them). This was clearly opened, unpackaged, and possible used by another party, NOT new. Not as represented, i.e. NEW. Amazon did step up and issue a credit, that is very kind, respectful and appropriate, for that I laud them. They do need to investigate this issue though, too many folks have the exact same issue. ... show more
