The old version of the petsafe feeder lasted us abput 7-8 years before the motor gave out and we have their water fountains, it's a solid brand. We were deciding between getting another old model or spending more for the newer version which we ultimately decided on taking the chance that more tech meant more problems. So far its been great.with no issues. It's internet connected so the clock is always up to date. The other model would slowly lose time requiring clock resets every few months. It notifies us of feedings, errors and food levels. The app makes programming it super easy and we can change it on the fly if the vet recommends a change. Older version is a lot of button clicks. The splitter for our two cats works perfectly. Its nicer and more solidly built than the older one and the lid latched better so the cats can't pry it off. All in all a win. Will update long term if the more tech heavy model ends up being more trouble than the good old "dumb" but amazingly sturdy over time version. ... show more

Seriously, where has this machine been all my life? We have one cat. It's important to note that, because I'm not sure how this would work with multiple cats unless you free feed. But if you free feed, you have no need for an automatic feeder. I have one vet fat, very needy cat. I feed him diet food. He wakes me up at 5 am meowing at my bedroom door. He follows me all over my home meowing. He wakes my toddler up meowing through her bedroom door. This machine has been AWESOME. I can now feed him 1/8 cup 5-6 times a day (and middle of the night). He no longer begs for food. It's accurate on the amount of food it drops. I measured it. It has a smart phone app that alerts me when he's been fed or allows me to manually release food. It will be perfect when we go on vacation. He stresses out boarding anywhere, so this will allow me to leave him at home when we go on vacation. It holds a ton of food. It lets you know when it needs refilling. Only SEMI-con I can find: it's loud. It comes with a stainless steel bowl that's super loud when it releases food into it. He can hear it from anywhere in the house, which is a good thing. He flies down the hall to go eat. BUT I have the feeder in a room next to my toddler's room, and I can hear it over her white noise. And since I have it set to release food at 2 am, I was worried it would wake her. Luckily, she's a heavy sleeper and it doesn't, but it's something to keep in mind. Seriously, buy this. It's reliable, easy to set up and monitor, and it has absolutely saved our sanity and gave me an option for letting our cat stay home during vacation. ... show more

    • Convenient, but prone to burglars

I feed my two cats wet food primarily but use this to schedule a snack in the early morning so they don’t wake me for breakfast before my alarm. I also use it to feed them one of their two daily meals when I’m out of town, since the pet sitter comes once a day to play and feed the other meal. It’s easy to use, has lasted over a year now, and works as advertised. My only problem with it is one of my cats is seemingly more intelligent than the other (orange) and has learned to press the button on the top to eat whenever she likes. I taped a cover over the button (which she tears off occasionally), and she figured out how to reach her paw into the food chute and pull food out that way. She taught the orange as well, so now they’re both a little pudgy. I’m going to keep it because it’s so convenient for my particular use cases, but if I find something that’s more burglar-proof I may replace it. It’s also a little noisy when the food comes out into the metal bowl, may scare anxious pets - can be solved using a different bowl. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. tl;dr dead and completely useless due to mechanical failure after two years of simple use, and a completely unhelpful company/support team. I bought this feeder two years ago after my previous Petsafe feeder finally stopped working after 7+ years. I travel often, and had a great experience with the 1st gen Petsafe feeder for such a long time, I didn't think twice when I upgraded to this newer model. It worked well enough over the last two years, with only occasional errors and inaccuracies. But overnight this week, I started getting notifications that the feeder was experiencing an error and my pet was not getting fed. I followed the online "troubleshooting" that just tells you how to disassemble, clean, and reassemble the unit. I quickly realized that the only mechanical part in the feeder -- the motor -- was not responding to any prompts to feed or prime. It isn't stuck or jammed, the motor just won't turn. You can tell that the feeder is receiving the signal for the motor to activate, since it sends the error notification to my phone and the light on the unit (blue when functional) flashes to red. You can see this happen in the video, and see how the motor doesn't do ANYTHING...it's just dead. I reached out to Petsafe's product support, but literally no help was offered that I had not already previously attempted on my own; they just sent me links to the same troubleshooting pages on their site. Instead, I was told that the machine cannot be repaired and I have to replace the feeder. They offered a 20% discount if I ordered directly through their website. Seeing as I bought this feeder in 2022 for $150, this insinuates that I must spend $270 on a pet feeder every two years if I want to continue with this brand. The "help" was a waste of time, and clearly this feeder is not built to last, is not repairable, and is an egregious waste of money. I will not risk my pet's wellbeing by not being fed while I am away due to this machine's absurdly short obsolescence and inability to do the only thing it is created to do: feed my pet. Unreliable and severely overpriced for a machine that is completely unusable after two years. Wait. Not COMPLETELY unusable. It's now functioning as a great extra storage container for my pet's food.
