  • Wouldn't do it again
Size: X-Large
I had to buy this to replace my old XL Classic PetSafe door, because they stopped making the replacement flaps... in the XL size. They still make the Classic flaps in the smaller sizes, but not the XL size. VERY ANNOYING! The Classic version wasn't the best door out there, but for mild SF Bay Area, and the ability to buy replacement flaps, it was functional. Now, with the XL version no longer made, I had to choose whether to buy the Freedom door to replace, or start again with a different company (and size). Because I already have a hole cut in my door, I decided to go with PetSafe again to get something that would fit in the old cut-out. The new Freedom door is similar in size, but but not exactly the same as the old Classic version. On paper it looked very close, though I could see that the cut-out for new dorr was slightly wider, but also smaller in height. The internal "go-through" specs are similar. But the CUT-OUT in the door is MUCH SMALLER/SHORTER in height, and slightly wider. After pulling out the old frame, it took a LOT of power sanding to fit the width. That part was okay, but making the cut out SMALLER in height was more problematic. It was only supposed to be 3/8" smaller... so shouldn't have been an issue. I can tell you the cut-out difference was >1". A less handy person, or someone without a miter saw might have given up, or spent $$$ hiring a carpenter to do it. I got a piece of 2x4, and cut all three sides (length, width, depth), to create a piece that I could set/glue to the bottom of the previous cut out edge of the door, to then be able to install the new frame. One good thing is that it looks like the installation of future replacement flaps will be easier. Unfortunately this might end up being more frequent. Initially, I had hopes the flaps might hold up better, because of the new mode of insertion of the flap at the top and how the top metal piece also swings slightly as the dog goes through the flap. But after <10 days of use, it doesn't look like that will be the case. My dogs have a bad habit of peeking their head out the edge of the flap to see outside... stalking cats, checking level of rain, etc. I correct this immediately, because I know it's hard on (and tears) the flaps. And they don't do it often. But, for example, over the last 10 years, I've replaced the original flap twice... so at the 10 year mark, I was needing a 4th flap... making each one last about 2.5 years. The dogs push the flap open at the bottom corner, but then tend to stand up, which at Great Dane height, holds the flap open near the top corners. The plastic flap is relatively soft/bendable and not tear-resistant. Over time, the corners would slowly bend and pucker/gap open, and eventually slowly tear. And you can't glue or duct tape to fix. When the last tore badly enough that the rain was coming through and soaking my floor, I had to relent and buy this new replacement. The only reason I have so far continued with PetSafe, is because I already had a hole cut in my door. It would be very expensive to replace that nice french-paned door and start again. If I ever do that, I will not buy a PetSafe. After much research and discussion with other Great Dane owners around the country, there are several brands that appear to make much better, sturdier, and weather resistant dog doors (Hale, moorepet, plexidoor, petdoorstore, petdoors all rated well by Dane folks across North America-- fb is great for these discussions). That bend/pucker at the top of the PetSafe flap lets in the wind and cold. Fortunately, I live where temperature is modulated by the San Francisco Bay, so winters are not cold, and summers are not hot, so it probably doesn't add a ton to my heating bill... but elsewhere I think this would be a significant issue. The new door has been in place for <10 days , and already it is starting to "gap" at the top corner. The old flap felt thicker and less bendable, and was also transparent. The new flap is not 100% opaque, but it is not the clear tinted version like the Classic flap. The new thinner flap is lighter for the cats to push, but feels like it won't hold up as well over time, and also seems to blow in a bit more readily with wind... letting cold air in. The old thicker/heavier version resisted the wind better. No it is not typically windy where I live, but we have had rain (with some wind) during the last few days. See the photo for the bending/gap that is already starting at the top left corner... at < 10 days. ... show more

  • Cheaply made
Size: X-Large
Installing the door was straightforward and somewhat easy. However, if the door is to be used in hot and humid climates, the flap will curl during the day significantly, creating large gaps for insects and drafts to exploit. Disappointed.

  • NOT Weatherproof
Size: X-Large
I believe this is the last time I look at good reviews. I bought this door on all the good reviews but not one person warned that this door really is NOT weather proof if you don't have a complete covered patio shielding the wind. Look at the pics during a normal sunny day with a light breeze, and I do mean LIGHT breeze. You can see the door to the left opening and pretty much staying open. When its just a little more wind the door flies completely open and bugs, flies still coming into the house. I was soo disappointed because to find another door with the exact measurements as this one would be impossible. Now if you had a big covered patio it will shield all the wind. I should have looked into a double flap. The magnets on this door is very weak if a slight wind keeps it open. During a rain storm I have to close it off because the first time I didn't I had a flood in my laundry room. The man who installed it did an excellent job with no flaws. Sealed perfectly and everything cut precisely, but after only a few months the magnets on the door barely held in mild winds. it looked more like an open hole in the door because I live in the country where wind is normal, I just thought this door was a better quality then it is. Buyer beware again if you do not have a complete covered patio where the door is, you will have to accept a hole in your door pretty much always open. ... show more

  • Disappointed
Size: X-Large
I have an x-large doggie door, put this was smaller then the original one so had to add some filler to stay in place and fit. The flap is very thin and only the one magnetic strip at the bottom (last door was a heavy duty magnetic strip on the sides and bottom and flap was 3 layers), which at times when the pups go thru, the flap does not lock back. . and when it is just a slight breeze blowing. . the flap swings open letting the cold air in (did this end of Jan 2020). . This is why i was replacing the old door for (had for 8+ yrs - my pup (he has passed) would get mad at one of other pups and bit at the flap). . and if a strong wind you have to close with the door cover. . which defeats why you have a doggie door. . last door had a 3 sides strong magnetic strip to hold against some strong breezes. .so i rarely closed the door. .only when my landscapers came to cut the grass. Also the doggie door cover is not good if you have a window on the top half off your door that is framed . . it is a chore to slip it in place. The way my big high energy boys run thru the door i need a heavy duty flap/door quality. This doggie door will not hold up to my pups. I found and ordered the original door . .may be more expensive but worth the money, this door not so much and will not last long with my pups. ... show more

  • Compromises and flaws all around
Size: X-Large
This is for the X-Large door. Assume you don’t mind that the screws mounting the flap extrude half an inch and can stab you or your dog. And that you’re ok with a company who charges this much and doesn’t have product manuals on their website (an accusation I’m happy to take back when the website is redesigned to a respectable way.). And never mind the fact that a replacement flap is near half the price of the door. Are you going to also accept that the slide-in cover was designed with a spring lock that is pushed *into* your door so as to scratch your door as you lift it all the way up or down (the dog door wasn't unsightly enough right? Here’s a 2foot scratch!). The spring lock also has the same lovely ergonomics of a nail. So much wrong with this door you could compete with this company by hiring junior high students to better engineer it. Don’t waste your money. ... show more
