I debated a while before deciding to put my money down on the extreme weather sliding glass panel doggy door. It is more than twice as expensive as the standard door. We live in the mountains at 7500' and winter here is hard. I think this door will get us through the winter. Three flaps instead of just one ensures that the flaps close when our pet has passed through. The double pane glass is additional weatherproofing. Our pet is still a little afraid of it, but with some time, I know she'll be running in and out all day long. We are going to need to do some tweaking with shims to get the door to fit securely and some effort is needed to weatherize the seams between the doors and the dog panel and doorframe, but the doggy door panel itself appears to be well made. It is our door frame that isn't square, not so much the insert panel. I thought we may have received a door without the installation kit and manual, but I found the kit hidden securely between the door panels. We didn't need the security bar; our broomstick in the door guide works just as well to prevent people from opening the sliding door wider to gain access from outside. The medium doggy door is small enough that only a tiny person could get through the doggy door, and our pet will slime them for trying. I'm hoping our days of birds in the house are over. So far we haven't had a chipmunk, squirrel, or skunk visit us, and I'm hoping that the better flaps will help to discourage them from venturing inside. Petsafe customer service was wonderful in assisting us with all the parts we needed for the installation. I'm thankful not to be the 6am doggy doorman any longer.

The door itself was really nice and it was pretty easy to put together and install. I bought the Medium Extreme Weather flap and I have 2 Shih-tzu's - one is 8lbs and 1 is 16lbs. The 16lb could push it open after a lot of coaxing but I think he thought the safety door was slid down because he couldn't see through it! The 8lb pup couldn't open it if she tried. The magnets on the bottom of the flaps were way too strong for her. The magnets didn't always click together after they went out or came in so I had to mess with it to get it closed fairly often. I ended up returning it and ordering the standard flap. Hopefully it works better.

We got this to replace our single flap door from the same company. We live in a place that gets very windy and cold. I was really hoping with the double doors it would block the cold better but one or both flaps keep getting stuck open. The rest of the door is much better insulation than the single flap door but these flaps continue to keep getting stuck open. The does not blow them open. It’s just any time the dogs go in or out (which is A LOT).

The flaps don’t stay closed, I’m constantly going over and closing the flaps. It got to -40 this week and I closed it off when it was that cold and put a heater buy it to keep my house warm. Please make it so the flaps close better.

We've had this for a few weeks now. It's OK, and better than no dog door, but it's not great. The plastic piece that holds the lock arm onto the closed door broke from opening the door in the second week. The locking arm is also plastic so a determined person could easily get in with a little bit of effort. It's installed properly, but doesn't take up the whole track so it's kind of loose, but not totally insecure. The flaps also don't close all the way when our dog goes through it. There is too much tension on the sides of the flap which holds it slightly open at the bottom. It also didn't seal when it closed between the door and the dog door insert section. I had to add an additional layer of some softer weather stripping I had. The foam that came with the dog door wasn't soft enough to form a good seal. It also makes the usable door space so small I have to turn sideways to get out of it. So if you're installing this on a 60" wide sliding door, keep that in mind. I have another back door I can use so I don't mind that much, but if it was my only access to the back yard, I would not have kept it. All that being said, it's still worth it for me. My dog has free access to the backyard and I don't have to let him out 10 times a day minimum.

Get this!!! I've had the normal PetSafe before, the cheaper one, and it doesn't compare to this! Spend the extra money and get the extreme weather....not only does it help out better with snow, rain, heat, etc....it also closes better to help keep out bugs, keep the AC or heat in. I live in VA and with four seasons, trust me....spend the money! I have two of these...one on the deck and one in the basement going out to the patio. The glass is thicker, the doors themselves are two regular flaps with an insulated piece between them. I have a 30 pound beagle mix who figured it out easily and just pushes his head on the door to go in and out. He loves it! And I love it when he has to go out at 2 in the morning he just goes, does his think then back to bed...I don't worry about having to get up and take him out....and I don't have to worry about my electric bill going up! Seriously, spend the extra money on this one....you won't be disappointed. I didn't utilize the screws and hardware it came with...I placed it on the outside slot and used wood shims to keep it in place. Also bought better weather stripping at the hardware store....also you will not be able to lock your door....so I got a big wooden dowel and cut it to size to put in the tracks of the door....works great!
