  • Good product, lousy directions
Product works as advertised, but the installation directions are very poor. Some parts came with the door that had no explanation as to how you are to use them. It really would not have taken much effort to make a decent set of installation directions in this day and age, I am puzzled why they would not do so. It made the installation take much longer as I tried different configurations trying to figure out the best way to install and to figure out the mystery parts. As an example the unit came with 2 rolls of foam strip, a long one and a short one, for extra insulation. The directions show you wrapping the foam (the long foam strip) around the inner flange, but when you do this, you can't push the bolts though. What I wound up doing is getting the door partially installed, then shoving the foam in with a screw driver. Not sure if this has much of an effect. I never did figure out what the shorter piece was for, not a clue in the directions. There were a couple of pieces of plastic that I figured out were for holding the bottom threshold of the door in place. They did not fit very well, it was a puzzle to figure out how to use them. I broke the threshold off the bottom strip in my attempts to figure them out. The part broke off so easily, I still wonder if it was supposed to come off! The clips seem to hold it in place is spite of the breakage. No mention of this in the directions. The directions instructed you to orientate the side flange pieces a certain way, but when you did, the seal strips did not align with the insulating flap, so I had to reverse them. That said, the product has a very good seal, a triple one, the outer flap, the insulating flap and the inner flap. After the dog passes through, a couple of swings and a "snap" as the magnets seal the door. The dog seems to be enjoying it, we certainly are, not having to constantly let the dog in and out. We installed the the flap on the door leading out to our garage, so we leave the side garage door open for the dog to get outside, which we shut when there's nobody in the house, so no security worries. Which is good as this door has a snap-on cover that provides no security at all. Seems that they should figure out a way to secure the cover better than just snapping on. We got the large unit for our 70lb Shepard/lab mix and she has no problems going to and fro. I saw some complaints about the nylon screws, but they worked fine for me, securing the frame snugly. I have noticed that there are fewer flying insects in the house since we installed the door, which is an unexpected bonus. This is my first dog-door, so I can't offer any comparisons to other brands or models. ... show more

  • Love it! ...until actual extreme weather.
Let's all be honest: you would pay a lot of money to avoid annoying routines. Wearing glasses/contacts? Boom, Lasik. Freezing cold car in the morning? Car starter. Letting your dog in/out all flippin' day? Dog door! Once you have a dog door, you can't imagine how you lived without it. These things are worth their weight in gold! Your dog needs to go out? They can let themselves out!! You don't even have to move! It really is beautiful. Dogs understand how to use a dog door very quickly. You just stand on the other side of the door, hold open the flap, and lure your pet in/out with a treat. Mine went out once, back in once, then was in/out, in/out, in/out for a few minutes straight. It was one of those perfect moments - a simple device that put the biggest smile on both my dog's face and mine. Outside of a close squirrel chase, I've never seen her so happy. This specific dog door was a step up from our original one-flap'er. Install is easy and they give you a sheet to measure where the door will go in relation to the height of your dog - there's no guessing. Does a very good job at keeping the temps out. In the winter, you can feel a little bit of cold air sneaking in past the flaps but at night, we just snap the plastic cover on and that helps a lot. (This cover is not really a security deterrent - I'm sure you could push the piece out of the way and snake your arm in and open the door. We have ADT for that scenario. It just prevents your dog from going out if you want to keep them inside.) We sprayed some of that expanding foam into the holes between the dog door and the cut out of our back door for a better seal. We've had this for 15 months now but unfortunately, we just hit a rare snap of sub-zero temps in Denver last week and the door broke. That is, the skinny part of the physical molding of the door that the outside flap screws into completely snapped off, so we are down to two flaps now. The outside flap was in great condition but we'll have to replace the entire door to resolve this (can't just replace the flap). There are lots of reviews like this on their website, petsafe.net, and I'm sure others have mentioned this here. (To note, if you register your product on their site with proof of purchase, they have a one-year warranty. Not sure if this would be covered or if it would fall under "wear and tear" but worth a shot.) So the "extreme weather" is a little misleading, as - from what I've read and my own experience - there's a good chance this piece will break in very cold weather. But...I would buy this door again b/c the ability for my Golden to let herself out far outweighs the cost of this door. For that and its being a great, reliable door 99% of the time, I give it four stars. Next time, before temps like that, I will temporarily remove the outer flap (screws in) so the extra stress won't break the thin little plastic piece to which it's attached. Hopefully they will improve the quality of this specific piece of the door in a future release. But for Amazon's price (best I've seen), I'm happy to buy this again. Just beware that it can break easily in very cold temps. ... show more

  • Challenging Installation
Very good for both the dog and us. It takes a lot of duct tape to hold everything together for the final installation. Without two people, plan on even more duct tape to hold it in place while starting the first screws. It still lets in a little bit of cold air on the sides of the flaps. Where the screws hold the two halves together, there is no insulation in the void between the hole cut into the door and the opening for the pets. This is my second one and overall it is the most cost effective. Some of the nylon screws were bent and very hard to install. ... show more

  • Not totally impressed with installing
I currently have a dog door that is not weather resistant. I purchased this one as an upgrade. I was really quite shocked at the difference. When is the things that I was highly disappointed with was that they sent plastic screws? It actually kind of blew my mind that that was sent. It is not an easy install compared to the previous ones that I had purchased but I did get it installed and it does seem to function quite well. This is not an amateur install and most men of high-quality will definitely want to modify the screws and make some adjustments. However, it does work relatively well. ... show more
