Excellent Purchase!
I purchased this kennel about a year ago for my elderly kitty. She needed a den-like area to rest in. Due to her arthritis, kitty is unable to clean herself very well. Her sleeping area needs to be cleaned frequently. This kennel is easy to clean. I use a non-toxic, pet safe cleaner to wipe it down when needed. The kennel does not come with a bed. I purchased a bed separately. The bed I bought has a waterproof, washable cover. (There are several good options on Amazon). This kennel is sturdy and well made. Easy to assemble with the hardware provided. Although I don't use the kennel door, it looks like it attaches securely if needed for travel. The best part about this purchase is that kitty loves her cozy den! I rarely see her sleeping anywhere else. We are all very pleased with this kennel!

Original VariKennel is the benchmark by which other kennels must be compared.
This review is for the Doskocil/Petmate VariKennel 200 (medium) size (28 x 20.5 x 21.5). Extremely sturdy kennel/crate. All the big-box pet stores around town carried Petmate's cheaper versions, which kinda looked like two laundry baskets that fit together. The wire windows on this are much nicer than oval holes in plastic. Crate plastic is thick and sturdy, but not to heavy to carry by handle with the pet in it. The handle is probably the only drawback. It it cheap and will probably not last long. But after a few trips to the vet in and out of the car carrying with 20 pound dog inside, so far it is still intact. This crate is airline safe as it has windows on all sides, attaches with metal screws, and has tie-down holes. All you need to fly is "live animal" stickers. My dog uses this as his daily crate (mini schnauzer) and it is the perfect size (200 size). Will last his lifetime. Worth the money and much nicer than similar priced items from the same brand name in stores.

Airline approved, sturdy, dogs like them
I bought these for an international flight we are about to take with our pets. This kennel is airline approved. It comes with plastic style screws, so you might need to buy an airline kit to make it 100% in compliance with their regulations and requirement of having metal latch screws. I have one 9 pound dog and one 11 pound dog and I bought one kennel for each of them. They both fit the kennel fine with plenty of room to sit up and move around. I have gotten a kennel pad/dog bed thing to place in them and the dogs like it. It is recommended to put your animals in the kennel often so they are not afraid when you fly, so that is what I am doing. I suggest you set this item up when you get it and leave the gate open so they can get inside and nap whenever they feel like it. I also have started putting them in the kennel when we leave the house. This way it does not scare them when they are closed in for the flight. The price on this item is great. I was able to buy two for the same price that one would cost me in the location I live. The plastic feels very sturdy and I do not think I will have problems with bending or breaking. The door is easy enough to open, but not so easy that the dogs can escape. If you have any questions about this item I would be happy to help.

sturdy crate with door that won't stay open
This is a nice, well-built crate that works nicely for vet appointments or for shutting a pet in at night. However, since the door refuses to stay open and there's no easy way to clip, clamp, or tie it open, it doesn't work at all as a safe haven for a pet to choose to retreat to during the day.

The airline liked it and so did the dog
Which was the point. I flew a dog to Hawaii from California, and neither the airline (Alaska Air) nor the TSA guy had any issues with the kennel construction. The wing nuts are capped, heavy plastic and the bolts are metal, and it comes with holes pre-drilled for use with zip ties for additional security. The dog is a 20-pound mutt about the size of a small spitz, and the medium kennel is roomy enough for him to sit and stand with no problem. He's unfortunately doing time in quarantine in Hawaii and he's sleeping comfortably in the kennel as well. It's very light, so I had no trouble carrying it with the dog inside, and it came well under the 50-lb baggage weight limit (I checked him through as baggage because it was cheaper than sending him as cargo.) He won't be traveling in the thing anymore so it'll just be his bed when he gets out of jail, but it seems sturdy enough to hold up well under consistent use. The latches are solid and I think it would be pretty difficult for all but the most demented of smaller dogs to do serious damage to the plastic. I recommend it. I would definitely get another one if circumstances required.

Best Crate for the Value
The kennel is made of very sturdy plastic, is easy to dis/assemble and gets the job done right! I had to fly my pup overseas (literally halfway across the globe) and the trip went without a hitch. My precious baby arrived safely at his destination and there were only a few scuffs on the crate from the moments he was in transport. Only things to be aware of is the nuts/screws that come with the kennel are plastic (NOT metal) and as such, may not be airline-compliant (depending on your airline and distance traveled). The plastic feeder that comes with it may also not be the most ideal as it's really just a cheapy half-oval of bowl with a divider in the middle (though I can't see it prevent water from getting into the food during transport). In the end, we didn't want to risk anything going wrong on the long journey so just spent about $10-15 extra to get metal nuts/screws as well as washers (added precaution), and our shipping agent thankfully sent us deeper bowls for the long travel. An unbeatable product for the price and would DEFINITELY recommend. Just something to note that depending on the intended use/distance, additional expenses may be advisable :)

Unpleasantly surprised.
I have a super large foster and smith pet den. It's excellent quality and very sturdy. I got this smaller one for a new dog based on brand reputation and reviews. Here is the list of things about this kennel that made it unacceptable to me. 1 - length and width are just about 6 inches smaller than I expected because the dimensions listed are for the outside. I never thought the actual space inside would be 6 inches smaller. That made the size choice incorrect for me, since the dog has no room compared to what I had planned on. 2 - quality is flimsy- the plastic is very light weight and the floor has ripples as it is so thin. 3 - these kennels are made to stack one on top of another. The floor has various contours beneath to accomplish that. It also is not a flat, smooth floor as I have on my other kennel- instead, the floor is rough, with rough spots here and there, and a mote that goes around the inside which would really only function as a way to make the floor uncomfortable to lay on. The mote doesn't really look functional as such as it is too shallow and wide for that. Based on this, not only do I have to return this item, but I need to go back to the drawing board and find one in person where I can see the quality before buying. Perhaps these contentions aren't deal breakers for you, and if that's the case, at least you know what you're getting ahead of time. I did not realize those points of interest until after the product arrived.

Wonderful crate!
This is a heavy duty and spacious crate. It provides a safe place for my pup to sleep, be safe when leave the house, or ride in the car. She enjoys being able to stretch out or munch and snuggle in when she wants. Nicely made and easy to assemble. Portable if traveling and need a spot away from home.
