This Fierce lll is in my opinion The Best Buy for my money. A couple months ago I ordered two (8000) because the price was good and I liked the specs. I wasn’t disappointed from the first day. It is quiet and smooth. I use them for surf fishing down on the Gulf coast. I have caught just about everything near the coast and it does well no matter what size. The HT-100 drag system seems to hold up well, even when I have a runner on the hook. I really appreciate the weight and size. It not only looks great but more importantly it performs better than any spinning reel I’ve owned. I always thought that nothing would beat my Daiwa BG Saltwater but the Fierce lll is now my favorite. After looking at the diagrams of several reels in and above this price range of $110, I concluded that Penn’s re-engineering has made this reel in the best class of saltwater reels. I tried to order another for weeks now but it’s been sold out, but Amazon has assured me that more is coming back in stock soon. Whether you're casting, trolling, of have rods set in holders at the beach, this is a high quality reel, that's reasonably price, a pleasure to use, and is effective in any fishing situation. I LOVE the Live Bait Liner feature, that allows you to put the drag at one setting (a lighter one so fish don't detect anything) when the rod is in a rod holder, and changes to the regular setting (the one that you fight the fish with), once your begin turn the handle, to set the hook and reel the fish in. I've bought dozens of different makes and models of reels over the years, and this is without a doubt, the best one that I've come across yet. Buy it, you'll like (LOVE!!!) it. ... show more

Purchased for a trip to Florida. Needed something a little beefier than the gear I use on Midwest lakes and rivers. This reel handled a good number of Bluefish, Catfish, Stingray, and some smaller Sharks from the shores of the Gulf and the Atlantic. Good quality and smooth drag system.

Solid spinning reel, powerful retrieve. Already used it for jigging in 100 to 300 feet of water, caught a nice sized travelley with it, over 10 lbs and brought it in with little or no issues. Had it for dinner. Awesome reel for the price, canʻt go wrong.
