  • Great pencils!
Color: Gunmetal Gray Style: B
These are great pencils! I've had time to really and thoroughly use them (well, just one) and I am beyond impressed! The motion is smooth, the lead doesn't lose it's point quickly like other wooden pencils, and the look is just purely professional. I have let some of my friends try this out (other discerning musicians, mind you) and they are as pleased as I am. It can write a new jingle, draw a wonderful picture of a dog, it can even write a short novel and never lose quality. I have written 7,000+ words with these, countless lists, many short etudes, relentless notes on a piano solo and ensemble music and I have not tired of these pencils! The erasers are removable, customizable, and adjustable, so I don't have to deal with the 'Nubby Eraser Blues' for a good while. Also, the design of the eraser is such a gift. You have no idea how many classes I have taken with wooden pencils (personal preference after my pens when taking handwritten notes), where once I put my pencil down, it just rolls off of my desk and onto the floor... Now, I just put one of these bad boys on my desk and it's right where I left it! The only real downside that I have found in this, would be the eraser's 'erasing ability'. The rectangular erasers are great, but they do not remove all of the graphite. So, keep that in mind when you purchase these, buy some great erasers to go along with. Pros - Great quality - Rectangular erasers - Professional look Cons - Erasers can't remove all of the graphite In the end, these are great pencils for whatever you can throw at them, just remember to provide a good eraser or be prepared to have remnants of recipe notes on your paper! ... show more

  • An elegant match for your parchment, easy enough for a two year old to master
Color: Pearl Style: pearl white and iconic Blackwing ferrule...
This is the absolute best pencil ever created. The graphite is soft, the pearl paint is radiant, and the soft eraser is effective and replaceable. Today I discovered that my two year old couldn't wait to start using it and decided to 'work' at my desk. Highly recommended for all ages. Pairs best with paper. ... show more

  • Blackwing pencils
Color: Gunmetal Gray Style: B
These are the very top standard for pencils, they are magnificently crafted, and gorgeous. Lead is slightly soft and easy to write with, I’ll definitely be purchasing again. The black exterior is chic…if a pencil is able to be labeled as such!

  • Great pencil with a good eraser
Color: Natural Style: HB
Firstly, this review is for the Blackwing Natural, and I use it it drawing. The pencil is well balanced and it's one of the few pencils that has an eraser I'll actually use. The eraser shape let's you get into small areas and erases cleanly. Now onto the pencil lead. I would compare the lead somewhere around a typical HB. It reminds me a lot of Hi-Uni graphite (my typical go-to pencil line). I generally use Japanese 2H to HB pencils for sketching as it holds its point longer and erases cleaner. And this does not disappoint. It is capable of dark strokes around B softness with moderate pressure, but can leave very controlled light lines (reminiscent of 4H) with light pressure. The graphite is still quite smooth for being as firm as it is and wears well. Sharpening experience: the wood is harder than your typical Dixon or Tombow wood and you can feel it when sharpening. However, when using long point sharpeners (I use a Kum, highly recommend) it sharpens cleanly with the wood being smooth, perfectly symmetrical, and the graphite takes an excellent point without chipping or breaking. These pencils have quickly impressed me and are a pleasure to use. Are they worth the cost? Well, the jury is still out, and I'll see after I use my first box. But one thing is for sure: despite the cost I am still enjoying every second of using these pencils. ... show more

  • Fantastic unique pencils
Color: Gunmetal Gray Style: B
The lead is smooth, like no other. The aroma when you sharpen it is so unique and wonderful. I give these away as gifts. If you haven’t tried them treat yourself, life is short.

  • You made me love you
Color: Gunmetal Gray Style: B
I didn't wanna do it. . . I mean, seriously, who pays $24 for 12 pencils? That's two bucks a pencil. You can buy perfectly adequate pencils for $2 for a box of 12. These are TWELVE TIMES more expensive. I've always had a thing for writing implements, and am very picky about my pencils (don't get me started on the awful office pencils. I buy my own out of pocket). My perfect pencil would be one that held a point without breaking, dark lead, comfortable to hold, an eraser that lasted through most of the pencil, smooth writing. I was happy with my Dixon Ticonderoga Tri-Writes for years. They weren't perfect, but they were. . . adequate. Then I saw a review for the Palomino Blackwings, and bought them on impulse, not really believing the reviews, thinking I'd debunk them. Even when I hit "Purchase", I couldn't quite believe I'd bought them. So who pays $24 for 12 pencils? Me, that's who. I'm addicted. The writing is so smooth and easy. The lead is dark, easily readable and doesn't smudge--very important for crosswords!. The lead is probably softer than what you're used to (I think it's #1 vs. the standard #2), but I wound up liking that once I got used to it. The point doesn't break easily--you really don't need as much pressure with this. It lives up to its slogan. And since they don't break as often as my old pencils, they last longer, so you get some good value for your money that way. The eraser--the eraser alone is worth the premium. It's extendable so it'll last as long as the pencil. It's rectangular, so you can easily erase fine points or wide swaths--you can even fidget with it like a clicky pen. I honestly didn't think this pencil was all that great until I tried to go back to my Tri-Writes when I couldn't find the Palomino. It was like going from a Porsche to a Pinto. I stopped what I was working on to search for my Palominos. My one minor quibble is, although it says it's made of incense cedar, I don't notice any aroma (I love the smell of a freshly-sharpened pencil). Given what a joy they are to use, though, I'll just sniff a cedar block instead. ... show more
