Very layer-able....I only tested them on smooth paper and they worked awesome. I bought these mechanical pencils for college recently and they came in and very good quality and beautiful design. I love it. It's a good gift for someone that's starting college or high school. It's pretty sturdy and lightweight and comes in a good case. It's easy to grip and durable. It comes with lots of lead and erasers.

Pencils work well so far have only used the big ones. They are super comfortable to sketch with and it's weighted so it sits nice in your hand. The erasers actually work really well I was surprised! There is a TON of lead refills so it's really good price point. Also the lead is nice and you are able to layer with it (I did all these with the HB big pencil and tested it on a variety of papers and it worked best on more smooth paper. You can tell they are good because I bought these yesterday and liked them so much it motivated me to do quite the plethora of sketches in a single day LOL)
