  • Reliable. Fast. Needs a rock solid physical connection if you intend to boot from it.
Size: Enclosure
I’m using this as a boot drive for my M1 Mac mini, which I got with the smallest available SSD. This provides speeds that get close to the internal SSD and it works transparently. Using with a Sabrent 1TB rocket ssd UPDATE: Unfortunately, we suffered from random kernel panic crashes every 2-3 days that got worse after any physical movement of the machine. The issue turned out to be the Type C connector wiggling slightly within its plug on the back of the mac mini. OWC's clingon (adhesive cable lock thingy) product has stopped the crashing, for now. Unclear whether a better cable design could have prevented this. Overall still happy with the enclosure, but be aware of the fragility of the connection. ... show more

  • Smart design decisions. Useful. Runs hot.
Size: Enclosure
I bought this to add an NVME SSD to my 2018 Mac Mini which, despite its age and paltry internal storage, is still useful to me and has a few more years of life. This product delivered the expansion I need at a speed that I require. The price, the ease of use and the build quality are all commendable. OWC made some smart design decisions, here. The Thunderbolt cable is user-replaceable (e.g., if you need longer reach) - no soldering required - but is captured inside the aluminum case, which minimizes the risk of accidental drive loss in case of a drop. Why would it fall? The enclosure lacks any type of cooling mechanism so any heat generated by the SSD radiates to the enclosure itself which, in my case, caused the adhesive on the back of the included plastic slide mount to fail. The captured cable prevented my drive from crashing to the floor. In fact, the drive stayed connected the whole time and no interruption was experienced. A simpler cable attachment likely would have allowed my drive to disconnect and drop, interrupting any data transfer. Thanks OWC. Smart choices! I will consider better adhesives to secure the mount but that's seriously my only complaint. ... show more

  • Works great

  • Solid, fast, compatible
Size: Enclosure
This enclosure is built like a tank. All metal, with a screw-on bottom cover. I installed a 2TB Samsung EVO in it and photo transfers are absolutely fast. Cannot comment about heat because I’ve not done any bulk moves yet. The attached Thunderbolt-3 cable is actually a 2-sided USB-C type that connects to the drive via an internal USB-C port! You could (theoretically) remove/replace the cable if you ever need to, without discarding the drive. Nice touch, OWC! ... show more

  • Excellent Support from OWC
Size: Enclosure
Bought this to use w/ an NVME drive on my MacBook Air M2. First enclosure was DOA. MacOS didn't recognize the drive at all. Called OWC on a Friday evening (day I got it) and after a few minutes of troubleshooting they set me up with an RMA and prepaid return label. Next enclosure showed up and worked perfectly. Drive gets the advirtised speed and was able to copy my 500gb iPhoto library to the drive in about 12 minutes. I tried a few other cheaper brands (<$40) and trying to figure out chipsets was exhausting. Deciding to go with a known good vendor (OWC) costs more, but you get what you pay for. ... show more

  • OWC Envoy Express is kneecapping my Acasis drive
Size: Enclosure
Add bookmark #1 Setting up and testing my new (refurbed) base Mac Mini M2 Pro I ran across a head scratcher that appears to point to the OWC enclosure as the culprit. I have two Acasis TBU405 enclosures each with a 2TB Samsung 970 EVO. The OWC has a Silicon Power 2TB. My plan was to use the SP NVME in the OWC as my home/user folder. One of the Samsungs will be my Final Cut Pro work disk and the other will house my photo and video archives. Moving the home directory to the OWC worked flawlessly. Before calling it a night I decided to test the speeds of the drives with Black Magic. The one 970 was as expected, 2800 write and 2730 read. The other drive was below 1000 for both read and write. Bum enclosure? Bum drive? If I only ran one Acasis/Samsung drive at a time with the OWC also plugged in each had full speed. No matter which drive I selected the first one was full speed and the second one plugged in fell back to below 1000. Which of the four ports I selected did not matter. I rebooted the computer to disconnect the OWC drive and boot into another user account. You cannot unmount a drive that has been set at the home folder. Both Samsung drives reported the same 2800 write and 2730 read via Black Magic! Reboot with OWC running and it's back to slow speed for one of the Acasis/Samsung drives if both are mounted. If I unmount the fast Acasis/Samsung drive the remaining Acasis/Samsung still runs at the slow speeds. If I unmount/unplug the slow drive and plug it back in alone it's back to the full 2800 write and 2730 read speeds. The OWC enclosure with a Silicon Power 2TB UD90 NVMe 4.0 seems to run cool and with 1384 MB/s write and 1570 MB/s read speeds. ... show more

  • High Speed - Easy Setup - Good Value
Size: Enclosure
I installed a Kingston NV2 Pcie 4.0 4.0 NVME m2 ($178 on Amazon) and got 1300 MB/s write and 1500+ MB/s read on the 5GB Blackmagic Speed test on an older 2018 Intel Macbook Pro . Compared to 950 write/950 read on San Disk Extreme Pro. No issues whatsoever.
