Description

Trying to play graphically taxing games or perform professional video editing on notebook, all-in-on, and small form factor computers can at best be described as unsatisfactory. Damage to the machine can even occur from pounding on it in frustration! That’s because the built-in graphical processing power is either immediately woefully inadequate for intensive uses or over time has fallen behind the latest technology. The AKiTiO Node Titan is an external graphics processing unit (eGPU) that lets you transform your notebook or other slotless computer into a high-performance gaming, video editing, and graphics workstation for a fraction of the cost of buying or building a new machine.

  • Do one thing extremely well
I know I need to rewire my desk but I was in a hurry. I was stuck because I don't want to upgrade to a new Mac Pro desktop mid-transition to Apple Silicon, but my stopgap upgrade of a mac Mini definitely needed a Pro graphics processor for my photography and video software, and computational tools for research and my work as a security architect. This is built to last. Solid construction, no downstream tb3 but this needs to be last on the bus as I understand it, so I have an OWC thunderbolt 3 dock and an OWC Express 4m2 NVEm pool on the other bus. It's definitely portable and will hold up in transit but mine is on my desk attached to a mac Mini 90% of the time. It works great, exceeded my expectations. Once I installed a GPU (in my case just an overpriced by $400 RX580 Pro OC) and put a Steven Universe sticker on it that was it. Ready to rock. ✌🏻 ... show more

  • Pretty happy so far
Purchased in July '23 and paired it with an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT for use with 2019 MBP 16" and it's been working like a champ for 6 months, so far. The 85W charging has been plenty for my use case. One feature I would have appreciated is a bit of interior case lighting--the exterior logo badge is lit when the eGPU is active. My AKiTio stays to the right of the monitor, so I see the left panel of the case, which is a metal mesh, so having a lit interior would have been a nice touch. The graphics card I bought doesn't have any lighting. I may try changing the case fans in the future, but it's not a high priority. Another item I think could be helpful is a set of 4 risers for the feet to increase the exhaust area for the bottom-blowing fans (I'm using 1-1/2" ABS couplings to get about 2" of elevation.) I don't move around my eGPU enclosure, so the complaints about the top handle are not something I have experienced. Overall, so far so good. ... show more

  • Easy to use
I've always had laptops and have had no experience installing or running external gpus but this was very simple and easy. No tools required and the screws were big so I didn't have to worry about losing them. So far I haven't had any issues with noise or cooling. It's been quiet and keeping cool. Now I'm finally able to play games at the highest settings with no lag. ... show more

  • Two units died
Two of them have died. RTX4070 was installed and this enclosure should have been able to support them. One enclosure worked for a month and then died. The other worked for a year. Avoid.

  • Works on my x1 carbon gen7 too big
Pros Works pretty seamlessly Made well Fit most cards lots of space Cons Huge too big like the size of a regular desktop my desktop for comparison Instructions are bad How to use 1. First turn on laptop (not connected) 2. With egpu plugged in and power switch on then plug into thunderbolt 3. If not working flip thunderbolt connector at laptop around. 4. Download gpu specific drivers 5. Should be good to go ... show more

  • If I ever needed another one I'd buy this again.
Great construction. Very easy assembly. The only thing a buyer should know is that there's only one Thunderbolt port on this device. If you want one plug to handle all of your I/O you'll still need a Thunderbolt hub that supports daisy chaining. If you want minimal with great build quality this is the eGPU enclosure for you! ... show more

  • Office Gaming Laptop on Windows 11
This is an excellent solution to turning your old office laptop to a gaming laptop (your mileage may vary). I have an old Dell Latitude 7480 with Thunderbolt 3 running Windows 11 Pro and an AMD RX580 card. So far, it's been working great but with some annoyances. Annoyances: 1. You have to Power On or connect the Akito Node Titan after Windows 11 Pro boots up, otherwise you will be throttled. (Not sure if its brand specific and other brands like HP/Microsoft may behave differently) 2. You have drop your gpu card top down so it's hard to see the slot. You might have a trouble fitting a 3 slot gpu card. Requirement for the Akito Node Titan to work: 1. Thunderbolt or USB4 (Check your laptop manufacturer if egpu was implemented over usb4)) Recommendations: 1. Make sure you have a laptop cooling pad as the laptop can get very hot. 2. I recommend you have at least 16 Gb of ram running in dual channel mode. 3. Update your laptop BIOS firmware to newest if you can. 4. You might want to buy a longer Thunderbolt cable, the one that comes with Akito Node Titan is short. ... show more

  • Reinstall drivers if Nvidia isn't detecting it. Awesome otherwise!
So I was hoping to put my older, beefy Gigabyte 980 Ti back into commission and this external GPU enclosure did just that! I'm also running Windows 11 on an LG Gram 16Z90Q (made in 2022). Great laptop by the way! I did run into issues with the Nvidia Control Panel not detecting the card despite Device Manager and GeForce Experience detecting it without issues. After a few hours of troubleshooting, I managed to fix it by reinstalling the drivers so if you run into similar issues, try that. It works perfectly now and I was able to force one of the graphics-heavy programs like Affinity Designer 2 to use the card and not my built-in graphics on my laptop via the Nvidia Control Panel. I definitely second the review mentioning hooking up a laptop cooling pad/fan and to buy a longer thunderbolt cable. The cool thing about the card was that it was charging my laptop, which is another thing to note. The case is also quite heavy with my card in it! The instructions were clear enough for me to figure out how to get my card in there although I do wish they had allowed the side to be opened due to how difficult it is to insert your card otherwise. I docked a star solely for that reason. Sorry Akitio! Absolutely recommend this! It'll help any laptop struggling with graphics rendering and it's just so cool how far technology has come to allow laptops to be able to use external GPUs now! ... show more
