  • Real value outta the box!
OK... let me start by saying I'm a maker so hacks, tinkering, and upgrades don't scare me. However, this laser cutter works right out of the box (a really big, heavy box) with little muss or fuss. My laser tube came fully connected and all I needed to do was hook up the water pump in a bucket of water and run some exhaust out of a window. I did upgrade to LightBurn and would recommend getting the bundle or getting LightBurn separately (it's incredibly easy and capable software). The laser was aligned and ready to start cutting. Here's where the tinkering comes in. I upgraded the blower to something a little beefier to move the smoke out more aggressively. I also added a honeycomb aluminum bed for cutting and added the "Ultimate Air Assist" to ramp up the air assist. You can do this easily with a compressor and a 24 volt solenoid air valve. These things are all nice upgrades but not needed to start cutting. This laser will easily cut through 3mm birch ply in one pass without needing to run at anything near 100% power. As with all things in big crates, your mileage may vary but I'm really pleased with what I've been able to create. You'll need a bit of space and a stand or a base near a place where you can vent the smoke. ... show more

  • Best combination of price / size / weight / power for a hobbyist like myself.
I bought this for hobbyist use, not for a business for daily production. I did a lot of research ahead of time and so should you. Bottomline ... this is the best bang for the buck I found in terms of laser power, physical size, quality of build, work space size, etc. I have it in my basement vented out a window. Getting it into the basement was a "challenge". Uncrated it weighs around 150lbs. It will fit through a 26" doorway but this is not a "table top unit". It needs a very sturdy bench to roost on. An aquarium pump to circulate water through the laser tube is provided. I would recommend spending the extra @$150 to get a Thermolysis chiller [eg. Mophorn CW-3000 or equiv. The next step up would be active refridgerate cooling but that's about $500. It comes with a little air pump which provides air at the beam focus to keep vaporized "stuff" off the mirrors and help with the cutting. I would recommend getting a small compressor [used to spray painting] from somewhere like HomeD. It come with a "PC type fan" to exhaust the work space. If you are thinking of running this "inside" you will want to replace this fan with something like a squirrel-cage fan which can connect to 6" standard aluminum dryer duct [they provide some plastic ducting with the machine but I would suggest the expandable aluminum ducting you can get at HomeD. Mechanically the machine is build very well and mine needed only sight realignment of the mirrors. DO NOT RUN THIS MACHINE AT 100% MAX POWER [60% is about the limit] otherwise liss your tube goodbye after a month or so. It is NOT a 50W laser [unless you only want to use it for a month], it is a 40W [in actual use] laser. Which is fine for my use but the power is misstated by the manufacturer. There is a lot of material on line about this laser. Of particular value is a series by a guy named Russ [Search for RDWorks learning lab series]. Excellent content. This machine has a Ruida controller and can be run by Lightburn. Which I would also suggest you purchase $80 for the version that works with Ruida. IMHO the RDWork software that come with it is not easy to use and not well documented. So, given what I've suggest about you're going to need to spend a bit more money to really get the machine set up ideally ... but not a lot and it's a great machine for the $$$ comparable to much more expensive units. I should add I'm an electrical/mechanical engineer. ... show more

  • Poor Tech Support
After reading the reviews I ordered this item. After setup I went to align mirrors and hit pulse and it made a loud cracking/arcing noise. I looked at the positive side of the tube and hit pulse and the high voltage arced to the case. The did not put enough silicon on the connection from factory. I added some and let it dry. I then hit pulse and nothing happens. After checking everything I contacted tech support via email. I told them the story that it would not fire the laser. They wanted a Youtube video of it not working?? Didn't make sense but I did one of it not working. Now each exchange takes 24 hours. Then they wanted a video of the lights on the power supply (why not ask the first time) so I did a video of the lights. They had no response. I asked them to send me a tube and a power supply and I would send back if not needed no answer. Then they asked me to borrow a high voltage probe and check the high voltage. I do work with electronics but I didn't have a probe. Got one and showed them a picture of the meter which showed 37000 volts. Which I have heard nothing back. This has been going on for two weeks. I understand they are in China but they could have giving me a list of troubleshooting all at one time and I would have been OK with that. Seems like they are stalling (or playing a game). I wanted to get some work out before Christmas but nothing but a non working machine. I guess if unit worked when plugged in it would have been OK. So at this point I am requesting a return. Now they have send me a new laser tube and that works fine (only took a month) Now there is a problem with the gantry being out of square making it hard to align mirrors. I had to raise left rail about 4mm and shim it to make it square. I emailed them about this problem showed a picture and the response was to watch a video on how to align mirrors..not what I needed. My question was is there a different way to make the gantry square other than shim the rail. So I just sent another email thru Amazon. The little bit I have used it it seems to cut fine..just need it level all around..not the bed the frame/gantry. Sent Back ... show more

  • Great cutter for the money
This is a great cutter. I moved up from a much smaller 40W unit and this is a great machine for the money. The shipping was handled professionally and it was easy to setup. The instructions were pretty detailed and the software is pretty easy to follow. I did invest in a couple of digital thermometers for water temperature and a digital flow meter to ensure that that water was properly getting to the laser and I am using a 5 gallon water supply and have had no temperature issues. Their support is good as well. Note to buyers. This machine is big and heavy and with packaging is over 200lbs so make sure you have a way to get it off the truck and into your shop. ... show more
