After 8-9 years (!) with an Epson 6500UB (and 3ish lamps) I hungered for a boost in resolution. I was concerned that I'd lose the 'ultrablack' from the UB moniker but those fears have been completely abated. This is maybe the 7th projector I've owned over the years and the detail/picture quality/contrast are all fabulous. I have a 128" wall that I project onto (I've had a half dozen screens over the year, super happy with my custom-painted light gray flat wall) and, while not everything is visibly 4k, the things that are really pop and look more 3d (ie. better depth, really a function of contrast and detail). Rings of Power on amazon is a great example of what this projector can do - it's a breathtaking experience. There are two weaknesses, neither are connected to picture quality. First, the remote is terrible. Range is bad, it's unresponsive, it's the worst projector remove I've ever used, by some margin. Second, I need that stupid remote more than I ought to because the projector tries to pull up it's own 'smart tv' menu and 'creative cast' when it's firing up, necessitating me to change inputs back to HDMI 2 (the only input I ever use) way more often than I'd like to. Once I'm up and running, no complaints, but it's both a terrible UI and a terrible remote. Overall, beyond happy. I watch in Eco mode (not Eco+ as the auto-iris brightness adjustments are distracting for me) even on sunny mornings when the room is lit more than I'd like, and it's still plenty bright.

I rarely write reviews, but after TWO of these Optoma models failing just after warranty ends, I felt compelled to warn others. The projector is great except for a fatal flaw of the DMD boards giving out and that leads to so many white spots that it looks like you are watching a starry sky overlaid on whatever you are watching. This is an issue all over the internet and to replace the failed DMD chip, you must spend about half the total cost you paid for the projector! Or you can try and repair yourself, but it's a pretty involved process and often leads to the projector failing in other ways. I'd go with a different brand until Optoma learns to care about their customers and not produce a product that fails just after warranty ends for so many customers. Another example of Optoma bad customer service is that it voids your warranty if you replace the lamp?! Most projectors like this, you replace the lamp yourself...it's like 3 screws to take out and is really easy. Optoma has it so you are supposed to go into a repair center to swap the lamp. Everything else is great about the projector, but it's unacceptable to have enough people complaining about the exact same product flaw to the extent of class action lawsuit risk is on the table for Optoma I'd say.

I got this True 4k projector and set it up to my Nvidia Shield Pro and Oppo 4k UHD player through an Anthem 8K processor. At first I had mixed feelings. First the remote control is terrible! It takes twice as long to adjust the picture, shape, size,...etc because the remote either does not work or double taps. You need to set up the picture for SDR (4k) for videos from Youtube, and for HDR (4k) for videos from Netflix, HBO, Prime, and a UHD player. The SDR setting was easy to set up and adjust. Blacks were deep and bold, whites are bright, and colors were vivid. The hardest color to adjust was green. However I could not get HDR to look as good. The blacks were a bit washed out and the whites were blooming and pixelating all over, especially the sky and high contrast scenes. It also looked a bit grainy from time to time. I knew something was wrong. From the SDR settings I could see that the projector was capable of better. SOLUTION: After some research I found out that in order to get a good HDR image that uses a HCG (high color gamut) or wider range of color, you need to plug into HDMI2 not HDMI1. After making this change and tweeking the setting a bit I was astonished at the video coming out of this projector. I looks almost as good as my Sony A80J downstairs! Blacks are solid, whites were not blooming anymore and everything was beautiful and sharp. I actually decided to turn down the sharpness a bit for more of a natural look. I tested the new Lord of the Rings and House of Dragons which had several dark and light scenes, and everything was gorgeous. This went from a 3star to 5star overnight. Please try this fix if you are using HDMI1, and feel free to ask me questions!

So my husband and I had an older model Optoma projector for years and finally decided to upgrade after it had been having issues starting up and staying bright. This new one has been stressful and unreliable in several ways, mainly because we had to get another because the first one we bought was faulty. It seemed fine when we set it up, but over the next few weeks it wouldn't start up properly; it would have incorrect colors, be WAY too dim, not be outputting audio, or just take several minutes to turn on and come up to full brightness. Other times it would randomly stop getting a source from one of the hdmi inputs and insist nothing was plugged in when gaming or watching something. We returned it and decided to try again in case we got a bad unit. (Note: Amazon did not offer an option to replace. We had to return and then buy a new unit.) This new one is performing okay after two nights, but WOW this is the worst remote I've ever had. The previous one was fine. This remote is incredibly fiddly right out of the box. You have to mash the buttons repeatedly and HARD to get it to work properly, and it winds up taking a long time to do anything with it. Yes you can use the buttons on top of the device, but you shouldn't have to with a $1400+ projector. The quality of it is just fine. I like that it has a built in 3D emitter instead of needing an attachment, and I don't notice input lag or anything playing even intense games like Elden Ring. It definitely requires a lot of fiddling with the settings to get good performance, and I would say blacks are not this unit's strong suite as pitch black scenes can look patchy even on UHD or higher movies. Do I recommend this?... meh. Bought on sale it does what you need it to provided you don't get a bad unit. But for the price it feels cheaply made (compared to the last one that served us well since 2017) and if you can afford a higher quality model I'd probably recommend it to save yourself a headache.

Extremely happy with this purchase. Was overwhelmed with researching projectors, and learning everything I needed to know about them. Luckily this ended up being perfect for what I needed at a good price. So I currently use this projector in my bedroom as my primary screen for Gaming/watching TV. I have it hooked up to my PC via a 25ft HDMI cable, and it acts as a second monitor. The projector is about 11ft from the wall I cast on, and I get a solid 120inches. I agree with other users that the Optima OS/remote sucks, but since I use it was a second desktop screen, I never have to use the OS or remote. I turn on my projector and use a wireless mouse/keyboard from bed to control Windows. Same thing if you have PS4/XBOX, you'll end up using that + a controller instead of the Optima OS/remote. No issues gaming on it. The picture is amazing, blows away anyone who sees my setup for the first time. Highly recommend also purchasing a 120inch Silver Screen

I hate writing this. It's quite unfortunate because I really wanted this to succeed. This is the sharpest and most responsive DLP I've owned. The picture is excellent and quite sharp considering the lens is NOT made of glass. The response time for 4k gaming is excellent. 1080p 240hz is even better. I've owned a Mitsubishi HC4000 and Optoma UHD51A prior to this UHD55. I purchased this in Nov 2022. In exactly 6 months it developed a stuck pixel. To their credit, Optoma's support was very good in my experience. The RMA was issued quickly, and product was repaired quickly. I shipped the unit to them, and I received the unit back with a new DLP chip within a week. The communication level of the support team was fantastic. Now, just after the warranty has expired, in the 13th month (Dec 2023), it has again developed a stuck pixel. I've had to replace a DLP chip myself on an older projector, but that projector lasted for about 4 years before I had to do that. This unit must have serious overheating issues or a bad production line of these 0.47 inch DLP chips. Bottom line: Support was good (for me), but the product quality has gone down considerably in the past few years.

I decided to upgrade to a 4K projector. Within about a month my Optoma 4k projector started making a very loud noise! Like an old time projector noise. Very distracting! Not acceptable! Optoma said it was normal for it to make this noise! They made no effort to remedy our issue, other than to ship it to them to determine the problem! I insisted it was quiet only a few weeks ago! So, I filled out the repair forms and shipped my projector to California to have it fixed. I had it insured for $1500.00 as it cost me $1308.30 on Amazon. It cost $227.95 to ship! What other option did I have? So, I assumed they would reimburse me after they found out that it was defective. Turns out it was the fan!! 3 weeks later it was returned in working order and quiet again... They replaced the fan. So, why did they say the noise was normal??? I should be reimbursed for the shipping ($227.85) as this was a brand new projector and the fan breaking so soon( less than a month) is unacceptable! Next time I will not buy Optoma! I fear the fan is inferior and will soon break again. I will tell everyone I know to not buy their product! They do not stand behind their product. Deny issues. And refuse to be fair by reimbursing me for my costs to fix a defective product! They should have offered to pay for shipping from the beginning and admitted it was most likely the fan! What if this new fan starts making the same noise??? I would stay away from buying this projector! So, I filed a complaint with the BBB.

After a lot of research I came around this projector. It is the best projector for its price, but the remote could use some adjusting. Recommend to adapt a media device to make its controlling easier. I currently use a 4K fire stick with this projector and I have 0 problems watching movies/shows/gaming in 4k.
