The OMTech 50W CO2 Laser Engraver is versatile and can work with a variety of materials. It is well-suited for engraving on wood, acrylic, leather, fabric, paper, certain plastics, rubber, and many more non-metallic materials. It is not suitable for engraving metals without a special marking spray.

Yes, the OMTech 50W CO2 Laser Engraver typically comes with proprietary software or is compatible with various third-party software options that users can install on their computers to design and send their projects to the machine for engraving.

  • Nice machine!
Size: with LightBurn
I received this machine one week ago and now comfortable to share my initial opinion. There were some issues with connection with Lightburn. First: if you already have Lightburn with your gcode machine you will need to purchase another license for DSP machine ($60.) The other issue was a bit irritating; after every job complete Lightburn would quit talking to the machine until I turned the machine off and back on. In frustration I installed the free software supplied with the machine and it worked fine. I do not know why but it also cured the Lightburn lock up issue. When I set up the machine I also changed the magnetic lens from American Photonics to make it easer to clean the lens. This created a problem with Lightburn's auto focus routine as the lens is a bit further from the material causing a change in focus distance. The auto focus is based on the upper point of the lens travel; for the stock lens it is easy, Just enter the thickness of material and you are good to go. This will only work with honeycomb in place; not useful for thicker material ie. bed out or rotary. In fact was necessary to run a focus test to find the correct distance from the top lens travel to the bed (in my case 22.2mm) and use the z-axis control in light burn to lower the lens to (22.2mm - thickness of material.) In my opinion this is a very nice machine; however, calling it auto focus is a bit of a stretch. ... show more

  • You have to be willing to learn how to use this machine!
Size: with LightBurn
Number one is joining the Polar Users Facebook group! You will need help and advice. The camera calibration was horrible. There are videos that helped me do that. Some people have issues with their machines. Thankfully I did not (except learning how to properly use it) mostly user error are complaints I see, unless it was something random like a button falling off and I guess everything has issues now and then. Learn to clean it properly and order extra lenses, they are not terribly expensive at all. I upgraded the lens housing because I wanted an easier way to clean it. Cam is the admin of the Facebook group for OMTech polar and he responds promptly with any questions you may have. Also I have found the group to be EXTREMELY helpful and supportive. If you are not willing to figure out all of the components and safely use it, don’t bother…it is not plug and play like Glow Forge and you pay for less control of your machine, don’t think you’re going to pop this out of the box and start busting out products…you will be in a short period, if you are willing to LEARN the machine and troubleshoot if there are issues. I feel like I’m giving a fair review because I didn’t give up and send it back because I was not getting past the learning curve. Work pays off and I’d take this over a Glow Forge any day. I also got myself a chuck rotary, but it’s nice this comes with one to start out with. You can’t do that at all with a GF. ... show more

  • worst investment for my business
Size: with LightBurn
Starting with my review, I must mention that this is my first laser printer, and I conducted thorough research before making my decision. Based on positive reviews and its cost-effectiveness compared to the glowforge, I chose OmTech as my preferred brand. However, it turned out to be a colossal mistake. Upon revisiting YouTube reviews, I noticed that most of the people reviewing the Om Tech Polar had received the printer as a gift for their channels, which likely influenced their positive feedback. I should have considered this as a red flag, but unfortunately, I didn't. From the very beginning, the printer had critical issues, particularly with the camera, making calibration and use impossible. It took about a month to receive the replacement part from China, but even with the new piece, the printer still didn't work. I find it quite ridiculous that, after spending $3000 on the laser printer, they expect users to switch out parts instead of providing a fully functional unit. This printer is far from being user-friendly, especially for first-time users like me. Its operation is incredibly complex, and I've spent more time troubleshooting and trying to figure out how to use this machine than actually using it for my business projects. My intention was to enhance productivity and generate more revenue, but instead, this purchase has been a drain on my finances and has taken up valuable space in my workspace due to its uselessness. The only positive aspect I can mention about OmTech is their somewhat acceptable customer service. However, it's still disappointing that they didn't replace the faulty machine, choosing instead to make me wait for over a month just to receive a part that didn't resolve the issues. This whole experience has been frustrating and has had a negative impact on my business operations. ... show more

  • Great desktop laser engraver/cutter
Size: with LightBurn
This was a upgrade from my diode laser. Well packaged with everything you need to get started. The only issue was the usb cables. These kept faulting out. So I bought 2 new cables and it worked perfect. Well constructed unit and a game changer.

  • Not as user friendly as you’d expect
Size: with LightBurn
The good: - User friendly repairs All repairs and upgrades can be done by the user no need to send in to the manufacturer. - No connecting to manufacturer servers This is the reason we didnt go with Glowforge. They require you to send all files to their servers and then to your machine. If they ever shut down or decide to make it a subscription service you can end up paying substantially at best or with a hunk of junk at worst. - Customer service from OMtech is fantastic and will ship you parts quickly for any repair that needs to be made The bad: - New machine, still debugging Because this is a new machine there are still things that OMtech needs to fix or change. 1) sometimes things just don’t work like they should, for instance our machines key, secondary key, emergency off switch, and power button do nothing. We have to unplug the machine to turn it off. They’ve tried to fix this, but without sending everything back in (which isn’t worth it imo) they can’t do anything. 2) the YouTube videos often over complicate repairs because OMtech didn’t have troubleshooting videos ready to go. For instance when researching how to test fire the machine all of the YouTube videos said you need an external controller and many said you needed to cut a hole in the machine to get around the safety switch. Turns out there’s a button that no one knew was there in a tiny hole usually hidden by the laser head. All you need is a thin stick (we used a cotton swab I think that was included in the accessories) to push the button for a test fire. No need to ruin your machine or get an expensive controller. 3) as many said it doesn’t always want to connect the WiFi or camera and sometimes gets into a weird state where it thinks the origin is in the middle of the machine. Usually this just requires a few restarts and it works again. 🤷♀️ it’s magic. In the end we have had ours for about 6 months, spent 2 trying to trouble shoot only to figure out it was user error, but there are some issues with the machine that OMtech needs to fix and likely will with time. I look at it as we got the first run of one of their new flagships that was probably rushed to market. It will improve with time (and likely already has) as will the support network for it. ... show more

  • Wonderful desktop CO2 laser
Size: with LightBurn
Comes packaged very well. Ready to use right out of the crate. Slight learning curve if you’ve never used a laser before, but there’s a Facebook group dedicated to the Polar that’s actually sponsored by omtech. From day one, I was able to do things with this machine not even possible with my initial diode laser. Extremely happy I went with this machine. Even the practice material they send is great quality, and full size. ... show more

  • Not even functional, and have received no help from OMTech
Size: with LightBurn
I have several laser machines, including a larger OMTech, and I thought this would be a nice, smaller addition to my workshop. From day 1 it has had nothing but problems. Cuts are inconsistent. Some days it will cut just fine, and other days it won't cut at all - same wood, same settings. When I say I have tried everything to get this machine to work well, I have truly tried everything. I've spent more time troubleshooting this machine than I have spent on my other machines combined. This has been billed as the "Glowforge killer" because of its comparable size and relative bargain price, but from a user standpoint, it is much harder to set up and use. Right now, it is an expensive table in my workshop while my other machines, including an ancient Glowforge are soldiering on just fine. I tried to reach out to OMTech via their social media page for assistance, but I haven't received a response. ... show more
