  • Fantastic laptop
The biggest benefit with this laptop is near full power/performance at a very competitive size and price. You get full 2080, adequate ram, excellent screen, good overall build quality out of the box for literally 1500$ less than you'd have to spend to get a comparable alienware area 51m, asus G703GX- only real competitor is MSI GE75 which is usually 200-300$ more unless if on sale and hard to find physically unless one has a microcenter/etc nearby. The performance of this is within 5-10% of the more expensive laptops for real gaming performance on the most demanding games, and the screen is arguably better than some of the competitors. The screen here is 360-370nits- alienware and asus at best are 300nit, sometimes 270nit even though the advertised specs g sync, resolution etc appear the same. It also is 97% sRGB coverage which is very good for color reproduction on a high end gaming screen. It is simply a better screen than the more expensive competition on average. The next major benefit that isn't obvious at first glance is the size- the laptop is under 7lb with physically slim width/length although it is not the thinnest available for a full power 2080 this is very unique and only the GE75 again competes in this area. Area 51M, G703GX all are 10lb+ and much, much larger on physical dimensions even though the screen size and actual performance are similar. This laptop looks more professional and screams 'gamer' a bit less making it more reasonable to take to work. The build quality inside and out is fairly excellent although it obviously is not as heavy duty or as fancy in appearance as the heavier and more expensive competition. The case is a finger print magnet but this is hardly a unique issue. The power supply is quite large, but all 2080 laptops need large 300w+ adapters. For anyone skeptical about the omen line- I have worked on HP laptops for years and owned top end gaming laptops from alienware, etc. HP has a prior reputation for poor quality and overheating especially with the omen line that with this iteration appears to be totally fixed. Alienware seems to have a much larger, recurring problem with not properly cooling GPU VRMs on top end hardware causing stuttering and freezing particularly if the laptop is not on a flat surface. Regarding temps- this does run hot but nearly every gaming laptop (without repasting) runs very hot. The reason is to maximize performance and framerate the chips run with variable frequency and throttle as needed to avoid going over max temp. This means the CPU routinely runs in the 90s for max temps during gaming- and almost every other gaming laptop also runs this hot. Running cooler means lower clockspeeds- less performance or repasting with liquid metal. Even laptops that cool the CPU well may do a poor job (such as Alienware) on VRM cooling which is just as important. The high temps are within intel's specs and cause no ill effects unless dust buildup over time further degrades temps- which this is easily fixed with a can of air. The cooling in this laptop is well designed and relatively heavy duty for it's size. This has a near full power 2080 GPU that is within 10% of the Area 51m and 703GX from ASUS. It matches top end clevo laptops. Why the 10% difference? The TDP is wisely limited to 150w instead of 180-190w- most laptops simply cannot effectively cool at 200w GPU without liquid metal repasting. This can be modded (potentially voiding warranty, etc) back to 190w should one be good at repasting. Most stock alienware area51Ms due to above VRM cooling issue will have difficulty maintaining prolonged full clockspeed, and performance gradually dips to near the same as this laptop regardless. I do recommend this over more expensive competitors- and it's great that HP provides a top end gaming laptop that is widely available at a great price- something ASUS, Alienware are not able to do or don't care to do with current hardware. ... show more

  • Price
I had an alienware r17 with a gtx 1070. Great machine -build quality. I only (attempt to) play BFV. At high settings and a wide fov, I never saw choppines (peeceived low fps) in the game. This machine, the omen, was under $2k. What was interesting was the inclusion of a rtx 2080 for that price. Similarly spec'ed machines are around $3k. The monitor is 144hz witg g-sync. Overall, great value. Building quality leaves a little to be desired. I have some screen bleeding (a 1inch semi-circle from the top right corner). I noticed after I had it all set up. I can't tell it's there until I go to my all black desktop. The memory: 16gb is enough. What I found wasteful was that it was set up as 2 8gb modules. So if I ever want to upgrade to the max supported (32), that mem is trash. I wish it came with a 16 single module. I added a faster m.2 drive to store my games. Opening the machine has to be done with care -too many stuborn plastic clips Performance-wise the machine does well. Keyboard is pleasant. Trackpad is ok. Does not get too hot. The software used for performance monitoring is a windows app from the windows store. That was a bit dissapointing as well as I was hoping to use autoIt to boost the fan to the max (autoIt does not support windows apps). Also, there is no fine tunning of performance in the software. I almost replaced my alienware with an asus rog with a rtx 2070. Glad I didn't. That machine may have performed close, but it was $800 more. You just can't beat the price, even if HP made some compromises. Oh, and this machine does not seem to exist in the HP site. There is only one obscure page about this particular model with very basic spec info. ... show more

  • kick ass gaming laptop for the money but OMEN COMMAND CENTER needs work
Overall, an excellent product. Especially for the money. Its very light compared to the ASUS ROG I ran previously. Lightning fast. I've played several games. DOOM (FPS 160s at max settings) FO4 max settings, Dying Light, COD, Metro Redux, Skyrim, Far Cry Primal and Hunter COW. All on max settings. I never checked FPS on those but it has been seamless. I ran Steams VR test and it tested at the upper limits of VR capability. Good to go. I do feel like I need to be a little carefully opening the laptop. Screen could be a little more robust. It can also get a little heated on high end games. I bought a KLIM laptop cooler pad. Works great....I had planned to upgrade the RAM to 32 but it runs fine at 16 and the 2080 Vid Card is lights out. Only disappointment is the OMEN COMMAND CENTER...….it opened once. I made setting changes. Crashed every time after that. Contacted HP, they couldn't fix it after 30 minutes of tinkering and I had to call it quits. OMEN CC is something I definitely want working. Otherwise its been great and yea. I'd recommend it. ... show more
