Here's my experiences and conclusions in regards to gel memory foam toppers even mattresses. Mind you each person's expecations and comfort preferences in regards to their beds obviously will always vary. I'll leave it to you after reading this to decide for yourself what is going to suit your needs. I'd only ever slept on a memory foam mattress ONCE while on vacation. Looking back I should have anticipated prior to buying the OLIXIS Mattress Topper Twin Memory Foam, 3 Inch Thick Gel Infused Bed Topper that there would be little to no differnce but live and learn right. I'm not going to deny the topper is well made. It expands quickly after unpacking probably only takes 3 hours or so to fill out completely. They recommend 48 hours but honestly you won't need to wait that long to use it. Mine had little to no chemical or off smell which I WAS happy to see but if yours does have a noticeable odor I could see where 48 hours to air it out might be what they are referring to. It is indeed a full 3 inches I measured it before putting it on the bed, see attached pic. Initially when you lay on it yes it has a nice cushy feel and slight firmness to it that starts to give as it cradles your body. I thought man this feels really good as it eliminates any pressure points you experience like when laying right on top of just a regular coil mattress. While it is "cushy" it is NOT a soft plush cloud like feeling you get from a pillow top mattress or a overfilled box stitched pillow style mattress topper. The thing is when I continued to lay on the gel memory foam, I progressively sank deeper and deeper into the topper. Especially where the parts of your body that normally carry the majority of your body's weight your hip area on up. My legs continued to feel great on it and my head of course was cushioned additionally by my pillow but as I slept the foam compacts to the point I felt little if any support. It even makes it difficult to turn over in my sleep because I feel like I'm stuck in the depression made by my body in the memory foam. So much so that the effort it takes to turn over actually pulls me further out of my sleep. Granted I don't like tossing and turning like most people but I do like to turn over either for temperature reasons if I get too hot or simply to get comfortable again and drift back asleep. I've given the topper two weekends now for the main reason that I don't have to work to see if I liked it the first weekend and now the second weekend to attempt to try again getting used to it. Both times I've had to take it off. I continue to wake up either not feeling completely rested or have had neck or body stiffness or pain. To give you an idea and better picture of myself, my height is 5'10 and I'm about 160 lbs. The memory foam though does have excellent rebound it quickly returns to shape after pushing down on it or laying on it all night I'll give it that. The downside is it's not able to maintain enough of a firmness even though I have the 3 inch topper. In fact if you look at my other pic I attached my foot is only resting on the memory foam while I took the pic sitting down on a chair and not putting any pressure on the topper whatsoever. You can see how it compacts to the point where my foot is "almost" in contact with the floor so you can imagine what your entire body weight pressing down on it is going to do. I guess for me I decided I prefer a mattress topper style like my old or current one. It's overfilled, box stitched, feels like I'm laying on a luxurious fluffy soft body pillow, I sleep cooler, and it allows me to turn over easily without a struggle. It does have the downside of compacting like anything a person would sleep on but it's over time not instantaneous or recurring on a nightly basis. Something easily fixed by tossing it in the dryer so it fluffs back up again.
