  • Good price, good looks, can be beaten into submission
Style: Pocket Knife
One of my pet peeves is companies that that the trouble to design and manufacture products, but can't be bothered with documentation. You won't find any clues on the OGT website, the packaging or the description above about some of the features. You won't find a review or video. And once you do work it out (with help from others) you are probably going to wish you had bought something different. Look at photo 4 above showing the knife closed. See the square protrusion with the baffling hole in the center? You are meant to pull that sharpened, thin bit of metal backwards with great force until the blade finally violently snaps open. It can be done but not without steeling yourself to the coming pain. I was able to file the pointy part down a bit so the process is less painful, but by no stretch of the imagination can you say you can flick this open. This metal piece could be ground down to the shape it should have been originally except that by their removing so much of the material by boring a hole in it, you run the risk of breaking it. OK you got it open. Now to close it. There is a serrated piece of spring steel which pops into place when the blade is open, to lock it. If you are holding the knife in the normal way it is possible to force this spring towards the back of the knife with your index finger and to use your second hand to partially close the blade, then complete the closing with 2 hands. Alternatively, if you have a first aid kit handy, hold the knife flat with the blade facing your body, and depress the serrated bit of spring steel with your right thumb while beginning to close the blade with your forefinger. Then use both hands to complete closing. If you have only one hand you could close it by pressing the back of the blade against your leg. The undocumented flashlight function did nothing when mine arrived. It would not twist clockwise. I unscrewed the LED tip and popped out the battery which is a tiny stack of 3 cells wrapped in tape. Also ejected was a round plastic disc which was preventing the light from activating. Since I didn't notice the orientation of the battery I had to guess, and guessed wrong. I'm not going to tell you the correct orientation. Just be more careful than I was when removing the battery since this is unmarked and undocumented. To operate the LED you simply twist the LED all the way CW, and to extinguish it, turn it a little CCW. I advise against buy this. It is not a pleasure to use and in fact is awkward, painful and dangerous to open and close. Thank you for the honor of letting me be the first human to review this product. ... show more

  • Small, compact assortment of useful outdoor tools, beware of the belt clip.
Light and versatile this tool in a decent combination of features. I would have rathered had one larger mirror than a combined reflective strip and partial mirror and it turns out the belt clip is ferrous so it was causing mis reading of the compass (compass demonstrated significant bias in north depending on orientation of body until belt clip was remove then it was correctly showing north no matter what orientation of the tool was used). Either change belt clip to stainless or print a caution on the body somewhere please. Still, knowing this about the letting the compass work correctly, the tool is a solid combination and the inclusion of a Fahrenheit indicator and basic "north pointer" compass is just additional advantage. the carbide blade sharpener and whistle work and the magnesium and ferrosteel also work as expected. This goes in the top sack of my backpack jacket pocket but I'll still keep a decent mirror with it. ... show more

  • Description misleading a bit
First let me say that this watch is nicely designed, but not for EDC. The cons...the two black buttons on each side of silver button do nothing, just for looks only. This is a basic watch, very fancy face plate that does nothing more than tell the time. Over all I am happy with the item, but the description should be a bit more detailed and not so generically general. ... show more

  • Compass doesn't work and the rods fall out.
Kind of expensive for what it is and the rods like to fall out but a touch of Gorilla super glue takes care of that. Compass is cheap and doesn't work, I know where North is and this thing won't point to it. But since I only wanted it for the magnesium at fire rods I'm not disappointed.

  • Good for any bag.
Haven't used it yet, except the sharpener. Whistle is loud. Cheap button compass, but it works.. This is great for a hiker, or a bug out bag. The lil clip tool is really cool.

  • Plastic, not aluminum, and thermometer bad.
This tool is described as aluminum-bodied, even on the packaging right next to the tool, but it's actually plastic. Also the thermometer reads 10-15 degrees too low, possibly because of the plastic body, so it's useless for freeze or other warning. Other aspects of the tool seem good. Off Grid Tools customer service didn't respond to my request for an aluminum-bodied replacement. With plastic body and useless thermometer, it wasn't worth the nearly 20 bucks, so I returned it. ... show more
