We live off grid, really off grid, in a remote, rural area. We are updating our bug out bags because even an off grid remote area could present challenges requiring a bug out camping trip! This UCO lantern caught my eye, but I wrestled with the cost for this small, basic item. The wife wasn’t impressed at the pics online but ultimately I made the choice to by two. They serve dual purposes, one for home if our solar system goes down; which could happen for a multitude of reasons including an EMP event. Second, they are small, compact, light weight and fit in a big out bag. I just received them, broke them out, and I’m amazed at the quality, the ease of use, and the amount of light they give off. You slight open, slide down the glass, light the candle and slide the glass back up. There’s a handy light magnification piece that clips on the back. I like the way it all slides and the safety of the lantern itself. There’s a handy hanging chain and a neoprene carrying case to keep it safe from breaking. The tip center circular metal piece does get quite hot, so be careful, don’t stick your thumb on it like I did a few minutes ago. I’ll be purchasing more for gifts for grandsons. We are a camping type family and these would make a great gift. The price point isn’t awful for its quality and accessories but I think a $12.99-14.99 price point would be a more fair valuation. Just my opinion. I normally wouldn’t have bought something like this for the $21 but we had some gift card money to spend. A neat product useful emergency preparedness and camping!

Nice light very well constructed. For us it burns about 6 hours per candle and about 12 hours with bees wax candle option. Great backpack item. It will warm your metal cup of joe. Thanks for a great product.

Great emergency comfort item. Light in darkness, just like the night light for small children. The light focusing disc is a nice item to add in directing more light to a specific spot, or reading if you have good enough eyes. Light weight and the glass mantle being protected when closed up is a major plus. In extreme emergencies can be used to provide a limited amount of heat in a small space, but still needs to be vented to prevent asphyxiation or CO2 poisoning. Great item overall but needs just good common sense on the part of the user to stay safe however you use it.

Update: I just went through a 3 day no-power situation due to weather. Luckily I had this little gizmo in my emergency supplies. It provided plenty of light when sunlight faded to move around the house, not enough for comfortable reading though. Only complaint is it is a big fragile. When I changed the first candle the top came loose from the bottom. It took finagling to get it back together and I must have somehow bent the upright posts every so slightly so it took some doing to get it back together so that it worked. Still not quite right, but usable. ______________________ I have to say that I do really like this item. It collapses into a compact package when not in use and stores nicely in the little case. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I have not used it yet. It was purchased as an emergency item and so far, no emergency. I do have high hopes.

So, friends. Find you a box of those beeswax candles along with a box of the citronella ones as well, and keep it loaded with whichever applies for the occasion. I prefer the beeswax ones for indoor/tent use and I use the citronella fellers for outdoor use. I've used mine to reheat my small stainless steal cup of cocoa to a lukewarm temp - probably could've gotten it warmer but I needed the sugar rather quickly. The candles emits just enough light for some late night reading and if you're in a place with little to no light pollution, it'll light your trail pretty sufficiently. The glass seems to really help it project. It's not ultralight, but it'd make a nice backpacking lantern. I've got one of these for every adult in my household. It's in our emergency kits. Do yourself a favor and grab a few.

I figured id give this a try when it went on sale let me just tell u I'm so happy I did this is awesome I love this little thing no mess great light puts off some heat lights up the whole room enough to see everything perfect to read or relax and still be able to see around you and see what ur doing great for emergencies long lasting candles great for power outages I mean u name it it's built super solid also it's safe to say this will truly last a long time and you get your moneys worth

This is a great little lantern, and it worked well on my canoe camping trip! I especially appreciated the foam carrying case. I use the standard plumber's candles cut short to fit. The design and mechanisms are very clever!

I own and use several UCO products, so when I received the candle lantern, I really wanted to check it out. I opened the box and removed the lantern. Packaging seemed good, initial exam seemed good, finish was good. However, when I extended the lamp, the top section (glass, top and hanging hook) only stayed vertical for a few seconds then 1 side tilted over. I then collapsed the lantern and then reread the instructions and extended the top again. Same issue. It seems that one of the 3 vertical supports kept slipping allowing the top to tilt. I tried to slide the top up again to see if it just was not fully extended. It would not raise up any farther and after a few seconds tilted down again. This would not be a problem if it hanging from an object, but sitting on a flat surface, one side wants to slide and tilt. I asked if there was something I could do to resolve but received no satisfactory response including one that recommended I read the instructions. Not very helpful. Maybe I should have ordered the larger 3 candle version, but I really wanted the single candle version especially for power failures. Will probably keep it but will to try to limit it to only hanging it from a nail or limb if outside.
