We live off grid, really off grid, in a remote, rural area. We are updating our bug out bags because even an off grid remote area could present challenges requiring a bug out camping trip! This UCO lantern caught my eye, but I wrestled with the cost for this small, basic item. The wife wasn’t impressed at the pics online but ultimately I made the choice to by two. They serve dual purposes, one for home if our solar system goes down; which could happen for a multitude of reasons including an EMP event. Second, they are small, compact, light weight and fit in a big out bag. I just received them, broke them out, and I’m amazed at the quality, the ease of use, and the amount of light they give off. You slight open, slide down the glass, light the candle and slide the glass back up. There’s a handy light magnification piece that clips on the back. I like the way it all slides and the safety of the lantern itself. There’s a handy hanging chain and a neoprene carrying case to keep it safe from breaking. The tip center circular metal piece does get quite hot, so be careful, don’t stick your thumb on it like I did a few minutes ago. I’ll be purchasing more for gifts for grandsons. We are a camping type family and these would make a great gift. The price point isn’t awful for its quality and accessories but I think a $12.99-14.99 price point would be a more fair valuation. Just my opinion. I normally wouldn’t have bought something like this for the $21 but we had some gift card money to spend. A neat product useful emergency preparedness and camping!

Update: I just went through a 3 day no-power situation due to weather. Luckily I had this little gizmo in my emergency supplies. It provided plenty of light when sunlight faded to move around the house, not enough for comfortable reading though. Only complaint is it is a big fragile. When I changed the first candle the top came loose from the bottom. It took finagling to get it back together and I must have somehow bent the upright posts every so slightly so it took some doing to get it back together so that it worked. Still not quite right, but usable. ______________________ I have to say that I do really like this item. It collapses into a compact package when not in use and stores nicely in the little case. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I have not used it yet. It was purchased as an emergency item and so far, no emergency. I do have high hopes.

This is compact and handy. We lose power all too often. Solar lanterns are my first go-to. But this is a good option and I’m glad to have it. The enclosed candle is safe for those furry tails we live with. I still keep it out of the easy reach of paws. This little lantern is easy to use I like the protective case as an extra for travel or go-bags. It’s also just nice candle light for sitting on the porch with a cup of tea or glass of wine while enjoying the crickets.

This is a great little lantern, and it worked well on my canoe camping trip! I especially appreciated the foam carrying case. I use the standard plumber's candles cut short to fit. The design and mechanisms are very clever!

When I first got it, I was dismayed to see how small the lantern is, and how tiny the wicks are. However, on the first test burn, I was quite impressed with the light output it provides. The reflector also seems to help by re-directing the light in the most-needed direction. While it seems a little light-weight and fragile, taking care with it should not be a problem. The cocoon case seems to afford a good deal of protection. I recommend this lantern for camping, emergencies, or even just ambiance lighting.

I figured id give this a try when it went on sale let me just tell u I'm so happy I did this is awesome I love this little thing no mess great light puts off some heat lights up the whole room enough to see everything perfect to read or relax and still be able to see around you and see what ur doing great for emergencies long lasting candles great for power outages I mean u name it it's built super solid also it's safe to say this will truly last a long time and you get your moneys worth

UCO lanterns have always fascinated me. Such a great design that simply works. However, these new powder coated ones are a bear to open and close. Perhaps after regular usage, as the coating wears it will improve? Picked up a new brass lantern which alleviated this issue, but the price cannot be justified being that it's thinner than the old school brass UCO I have and felt a bit flimsy. The candle also rattles around which isn't ideal. The chain in theory is great, but it gets hooked on everything that you don't want it to. The little neoprene cover fits well, but doesn't accommodate the reflecter which comes in this kit. Then again, the reflector doesn't do much to be fair. Now that I'm done complaining.. it does what it's supposed to. Like most products now days, they aren't made like they used to be... But when the lights go out I think this little guy will perform. The best part about these lanterns (in my opinion) is wind resistance. On a hot night with no power, you can step out on the porch with a light breeze and this sucker isn't even phased.
