  • Good Quality and Simple to Use
This microphone is pretty straightforward. Windows detected it right away and installed it. There’s nothing tricky about the operation. It’s got a simple mute function when you want to be sure you’re not transmitting, and the LED accent lights stop moving when it’s muted. The sound quality is good. The mic picks up speech without the need to lean into it, which makes it a good option for a desk mic. Aside from that, as you can tell from the photos, my desk—not the workbench, but the desk where I kind of relax and play games—is starting to become a collection of LED-accented accessories. This is a good mic. It’s not expensive. It’s easy to set up and absolutely works. It’s easy to adjust. Plus, the LED accents are nice. ... show more

  • It's an okay option to have as a backup
Microphones like these always cause me concerns of their overall qualities until I hear myself played back to me. This is one of those microphones where the quality can be better in certain areas but it's limited to its construction and the overall lack of software that it would help enhance. It peaks out easily and it does not pick up the voices at different ranges, scooting away to the side of the microphone won't pick it up as easily as normal microphones. However it still gets a solid connection and feedback if you're talking straight into it, or rather it its general direction. The mute button is a nice addition and I'm glad they have something like that in case something bad happens and I don't want people to hear it. Overall it's a good option to have if you somehow broke your other microphone and you need a replacement. This will do a great job until then ... show more

  • great voice audio
To help me (and you) decide if this is the right microphone for my/your purposes, I've done a comparative recording and attached it to my review. Many times a day is technically capable of being a studio microphone, and cost about US $125. This microphone costs just 1/5 of that. My audio provides a comparison. The name on the product page is hopelessly generic (“USB Computer Microphone, Noise Cancelling PC Mic with RGB Light” , so I will refer to it in this review as "K8” since that is what shows up on my PC when I'm looking at available audio input devices) Things I like about the K8 microphone: 1. Small, and a reasonable "footprint". This portability is of particular value to me, as I spend more than half of my time working remotely from a tent, RV, or motel room. So while I have a studio-quality microphone in my home office attached to my big PC, this new USB computer microphone is a much better match for my portable computing needs. 2. Specifically good for human voice pickup. It seems to be optimize for the standard human vocal range, seeming to favor the human voice over other sounds in my room, such as the hum of a fan for the sound of a dripping faucet. 3. Easy to tell when it's properly hooked up, thanks to the flashing multicolored rim on the base of the mic. My more expensive mic provides no visual cue like this. 4. Long USB cord/cable. Looks to be about 4 feet long. That would make it particularly useful when using it in a conference room on the table and the person recording the audio needs to snake the wire all the way over to his/her laptop. 5. Drop-dead easy installation. Plug it into a USB port, and it's ready, as soon as I select it in my computer audio software. as you can see in one of my images it is specifically called the K8 mic, so look for that. 6. Price -- at its current price of $25 US it is a GREAT price for a voice-range-focused mic specifically excels at that. Things I didn't like as much about it: 1. Seems to have a narrow pickup range, favoring the human voice. While that focus on that narrow human voice range is optimal for vocal recording, such as when I am trying to pick up the voices of a group of meeting attendees, I doubt this could do a good job with higher audio Hz ranges (like high music notes or the sound of a symbol) and lower Hz range sounds, like many musical instruments. So while it does a fine job with voice recording I seriously doubt it could compete with microphones that have a wider dynamic range if I'm trying to record an event that has people singing AND instruments playing. Since this mic appears to favor the hertz range of voices, it might not do as good of a good job picking up a full range of sounds, such as specific kinds of instruments or capturing a more realistic reproduction of a mixture of room noises. Since I did not need anything but the human voice in terms of how I plan to use this mic, I did not reduce my reading of the product because of that limited range. For my purposes, that's actually ideal. But if your purposes are different, it might not be the ideal make for you. 2. That groovy disco light on the base… ;/ While I understand its functional value of making it clear that the mic is getting a signal through the USB connection there are so many more scenarios in which I would prefer to see a steady subtle light rather than this throbbing, moving, flashing collection of blue, red, and green, such as when I'm trying to focus on work while using the mic for voice recognition software and would prefer not to have the distraction of a flashing light in my visual periphery. 3. Short gooseneck. I consider this a relatively minor problem since this is marketed as an omnidirectional microphone. As such, one should not need to "name it" in a certain direction, as it should, by design, pickup equally in all directions around the mic. But the fact is that if you're planning to use this, say, in a coffee shop to record something on your laptop, it will be nearly impossible to use it up close in a directional kind of way other than by picking it up from the base since that gooseneck is unrealistically short for putting close to the mouth unless you've got it handheld or on a chest high platform near your mouth. Again, this is only a shortcoming of the product if your intention is to use it for up close, directional recording — which is not what it is designed for, so I'm not counting any points off for that. SUMMARY: I'm giving it a pretty high score here because for my purposes in particular this works great. I needed something portable, something that listens well for voice recognition software, and that works in a relatively quiet environment, which is typical when I am working on my laptop. I definitely would not recommend it if you're trying to record your voice in a noisier environment, such as a busy coffee shop with lots of competing noises; it will sound like competing noises if your goal is to actually record the audio. sorry that I could not give you an audio recording comparing this to the mic I have been using — blue snowball. Amazon doesn't seem to be recognizing the file type even when I change it from an audio file to a video file. :/ ... show more
