  • Jaws not parallel out of the box
Style: OLD Model
Just got these delivered today and installed them on the G3 chuck I have. I aligned the numbers just like the instructions said to do and tightened them down. They looked a bit crooked to me, but were seated on the chuck just fine. Over the length of the jaws, they had a larger opening at the tips then at the chuck end. I put a pen blank in to check and sure enough, there was at least a 1/16" gap at the tips that didn't even touch the blank. These are unusable as the blank would surely move during drilling. I am sending back to Amazon for a full refund. I expect better quality from NOVA. I though buying a NOVA set of jaws for a NOVA chuck would be a easy no nonsense deal, but I will think again before hitting the one click. ... show more

  • Its ok, but there are some limitations
Style: OLD Model
I've been turning pens now for a couple of years. I always thought one of these jaw sets would be the most accurate way to drill centered holes in blanks. But a few things stood out right away after I tried to drill a few. The blank has to be a square in order for it to engage all four corners of the jaws. Most are not quite square, more rectangular. So it will only engage on two edges. And its not as super accurate in centering as you would hope for. Its much slower than drilling on the drill press. You have to mount up the blank and then slide the tailstock up with a drill chuck and bit mounted and start cranking the tailstock to drive in the bit. And take it from me, the speed of travel on the tailstock ram is quite a bit slower than what a drill press quill moves. And since its a bit of a setup to configure everything, you really need to do a few pens worth of blanks to be somewhat efficient. And it ties up one of your chucks unless you want to swap jaws all the time. My old and still current setup is a drill press with an X-Y vise that I can set a blank or two side by side in and adjust the bit within a couple of seconds and then drill the blank with reasonable accuracy. I can probably turn out 3 sets on blanks drilled in about the time it takes to do one on the lathe. Live and learn. I did find a use for the jaws though. I chucked up a square blank in them and then turned the end into a cone. I then used that cone as a drive and center for some tool handles that I had already drilled a center hole in. Worked well and I didnt have to worry if I got too close with the chisel since it was just wood holding and driving the handle. ... show more

  • Fantastic for drilling pen blanks
Style: OLD Model
These jaws really do a great job drilling pen blanks. I've been using Nova chucks for a number of years now and I have a small collection of jaws. When this jaw set first came out I thought it would be nice to have but I really didn't have a need at the time. When the need arose I was still hesitant as I knew I could use the drill press to drill my pen blanks. I decided to order these jaws anyway based on a few initial positive comments I read. I don't turn many pens as I prefer turning so many other things but when my son asked me to make some pens I thought this would be a good opportunity to try these jaws. I am VERY glad I did. These jaws are fantastic. The holes I drilled in the pen blanks are straight and centered on the blank much better than if I had done them on the drill press. I also used these jaws with a forstner bit to square up the ends of the wood before turning and again everything worked out great. I don't have a barrel trimmer but I would think these jaws would work well with one if the lathe is properly aligned. I've looked at a number of pen blank jaws and these are the best I've seen so far. Two screws hold each jaw firmly to the chuck so there is no chance of the top of the jaws being pushed apart with the stock in place. The jaws hold the stock firmly top to bottom with plenty of contact area so there is no damage to the stock. If you're a pen turner or have a need to hold small square stock, especially for drilling applications, I highly recommend this jaw set. A few notes before using these jaws: 1) Be sure your lathe head stock and tail stock are properly aligned so you don't end up with enlarged holes. 2) Before using these (and all jaws in my opinion) take a few minutes to round over the sharp corners a bit just in case your fingers get too close when the jaws are spinning. A few minutes with a file, sandpaper, etc. could literally save your skin. 3) Always be careful. Have fun turning. ... show more

  • Disappointed in hold capacity
Style: OLD Model
My disappoint comes from the fact that this set of jaws are poorly designed. I would have thought that I would be able to extend the work into the chuck itself. It can't be done. First the inside screw interferes with the path. Then the permanent portion of the jaws. It only allows the user to put the part 1 13/16 deep into the jaw. The basic 20mm pin jaw will allow parts past and into the chuck if it is 1 inch or less. I can put the work piece in about 1/2 deeper in the pin jaws. There is a draw back to those also. There is only one screw in the outside portion of the jaw. Making it easy to spring the jaws. This means that the jaws are easily bent when placing the work piece toward the outer portion of the jaws. ... show more

  • BETTER THAN I EXPECTED
Style: OLD Model
I’ve been turning pens for over 10 years now and have been drilling the holes and trimming the blanks with my drill press. The problem I was having was that I was rarely able to get the hole in the blank centered all the way through. When I got the Pen Plus Jaws, I just removed the #1 and # 3 jaw on my Nova Midi Chuck and attached the pen jaws in their place with two screws each jaw. There are no screws that come with the Pen Jaws so you need to use the current screws that are on your Nova Chuck. I put the Chuck on my lathe and inserted a piece of 3/4 inch purple heart I was using for a pen and proceeded to drill a 27/64 hole in the blank. It worked great and the hole was centered all the way through the blank. I did slow down the drilling process as I was coming to the end to minimize blowout and did not notice anything out of the ordinary. I would definitely recommend the Pen Plus Jaws to any pen turner who already has a Nova Chuck for the quality and ease for the good results and more economical cost when compared to purchasing a brand new pen turning chuck. I wish I had done this years ago. ... show more
