We bought this electric maker to make ice cream with our grandchildren, and it worked great! I bought the manufacturer's ice cream flavor packets (vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry are found at Walmart). We mixed that with heavy cream and milk, poured it into the metal canister, layered the rock salt and ice, and 30 minutes later, delicious ice cream! This maker mixes 4 quarts of ice cream, so you'll need (per maker's instructions) 2 medium bags of ice and 1 bag of rock salt (we actually used less than one big bag of ice and about 1/2-3/4 bag of rock salt. Our grandkids thought throwing the ice and salt in was great fun, and they got a little carried away! But we still had plenty.) This unit is advertised as an indoor appliance, but we made ice cream on the back porch in 92-degree heat. The ice and salt do make a bit of a mess, so indoors, be sure to put down a big garbage bag on the counter or floor underneath to catch the ice and salt. Easier clean-up. Homemade ice cream at 30 minutes will be ready and has a soft consistency--just like a Wendy's frosty. We put the leftover ice cream in the freezer in the metal canister and lid from the kit. Didn't transfer to another container. Three hours later, the ice cream was still soft and creamy, not frozen hard like grocery ice cream. Next week, we are making vanilla ice cream with grocery ingredients to compare "from scratch" with the manufacturer's ice cream packets. Can't wait! I know it'll be tasty! ... show more

I purchased 2 different ice cream makers. this by far out did the $200.00 one I purchased as well. the biggest thing I like about this is the ease in use and how much fun it was to make Ice Cream and eat it right away. Amazing recipe book that comes with it gives you all sorts of choices. I will say this is a well worth it if you like to make home made ice cream. ... show more

The unit made ice cream and it was enjoyed by all. Performance was good, but the unit is not made to be very sturdy. The plastic grip that you use to carry the bucket cracked the first time it was used. Literally went less that 10 feet and it separated. Inferior design and too light weight. Small pieces of wood flaked off the bucket when being used for the first time. We were scared to remove the dash fearing it would break. Flimsy plastic. Well designed and well made. Fits together nicely. Transparent cover allows you to watch mixture expand and mix as it freezes. The plastic ice/salt bucket is nicely fitted and makes the operation neat and fun. The outer wood covering acts as a thermal insulator protecting the ice/salt slurry from the surrounding temperature and the wood does not frost up. I have used ice cream makers since the 1950s including hand crank types. I have recommended this maker to friends and family. The outside is huge but the metal bucket inside is small. It requires lots of ice. However; it’s the best homemade ice cream. Smooth how I like it and there aren’t big ice crystals in it.
