  • Best Pokémon version yet
Color: Pokemon Black Edition: Bundle
If you are a fan of Pokémon you MUST buy this game. End of discussion. Yes, it's even better than Gold and Silver were. With 150 all new monsters and 0 of the old ones (until you beat the elite 4) it's just like playing those old games all over again. You run into stuff and you're like "Hey, what's THAT?" Graphics The visuals in the game are slick and faultless. The world is now fully 3D and is rendered in loving detail. Building interiors still get reused a little more than is preferable but each gym has a unique appearance and style. In battle, Pokémon are constantly animated and even close their eyes when asleep and more important trainers may themselves be animated. A variety of Pokémon have different visuals depending on their sex, time of year, or other factors. Sound The audio is top notch, even more so than usual for a Pokémon game. The Team Plasma battle music and the background music for several of the cities are particularly catchy. Gameplay There are a number of improvements in gameplay. Battles move faster and weather only animates on the first turn of a battle. TMs can now be used an infinite number of times. EXP is now calculated in a way that gives more EXP to lower level Pokémon fighting higher level Pokémon. As with every generation there are tons of new moves and hold items to customize your Pokémon but interestingly several moves have been slightly altered. Dark patches of grass can get you into doubles battles in the wild and shaking grass can give you rare or powerful Pokémon for each area. One downside though is that whereas in earlier versions you could play the game almost entirely with the touch pad and the D-pad now using the buttons will be required as in the overworld your touch pad area is filled with a new attachment called the C-Gear which allows you to connect with friends and strangers. Finally, HMs are of highly reduced importance in this game. If I recall correctly the only HM-use absolutely required to complete the game is a single instance of Cut near the beginning. Pokémon The new Pokémon are great and the styling and balance is very good. It's worth noting that this generation does not have a "bidoof/zigzagoon/rattata/zubat"-type Pokémon that appears everywhere to the point of annoyance. There is also a wide variety of Pokémon to catch and train, though the selection of Water-type Pokémon is surprisingly limited as there are no water routes in the whole game. Some people have complained that the starters are not as clever and interesting as they were in the past, particularly the fire one whose final evolution is yet another Fire/Fighting type. I personally think they're fine though. Plot/Story/Difficulty A Pokémon game with story? MADNESS! But it's true. Pokémon Black and White have a decent plot line with momentum to it that will keep you wanting to see what happens next. The NPCs are interesting to talk to and take an active part in the plot-line doing almost as much work to save the world as you do. I will caution that it's still a Pokémon game, not Proust, but it's good enough to keep most players hooked. The game likewise offers an unexpected challenge to those familiar with the franchise. The game does a good job of pacing itself so that opponents stay close to the level of the player. Many trainers and all gym leaders have learned moves specifically to counter their obvious weaknesses and the AI can employ some strategy. That said, this isn't a hard game by any means, but it will keep you on your toes at least. Gripes Yes, I have a few nits to pick. No game is perfect and Pokémon Black and White are no exception. The biggest is Black City/White Forest, a special area the player gains access to after defeating the elite four. These areas will be entirely EMPTY and devoid of content if the player does not complete the game in TEN DAYS. That's right, the moment you flick on the game for the first time a clock starts ticking and doesn't stop when you turn the game off. There is absolutely no warning or even HINT about this in game. You can fill the areas up by connecting to people via the ExtraLink who have already filled them but if you don't have a friend handy to do that then you're just outta luck. Second is the C-Gear, which fills up the touch screen at all times in the overworld when that screen could be put to much better use. Should I buy this for my child/parent/sibling/significant other/self/alter ego? Yes, without question this is the best Pokémon game ever produced. Black and White are masterpieces and the highest level of craft for Gamefreak to date. Anyone who has ever enjoyed a Pokémon game will love this and quite a few who have not should give this incarnation a shot. ... show more

  • Very disappointed with Nintendo!
Color: Metallic Blue Edition: Bundle
Bought this for my 10 yr. old for Christmas. Both screens went blank on it exactly 3 weeks later. Amazon was sold out of the Mario bundle, so I couldn't exchange it for a new one. When I contacted Nintendo, they wanted to charge me $85 to repair it. After telling them that I had read online about numerous complaints that the screen was going out on these systems, I was told that my DSi did not have the same problem that those systems had. Really? I guess their customer service reps are so good that they can diagnose the problem without ever seeing the system. I told them that I would not pay to have a brand new system repaired and that Amazon was willing to return it for me. At that point, the rep agreed to repair it for free but said that my warranty will no longer be valid for any future problems. Are you kidding me?! Obviously if we're already having problems with the system, there's a good chance it will happen again! My son has a Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, and a DS Lite. All still working perfectly, yet this one broke in only 3 weeks. Sounds like poor quality and poor customer service to me! ... show more

  • Classy and Cool
Color: Pokemon Black Edition: Bundle
My daughter's DS was secondhand from me, and my wife and I agreed that it's starting to die of old age and kid-fatigue. With her birthday coming up, I looked into the newer units and decided that the Nintendo 3DS was a bad idea: she logs hours on her DS, and Nintendo themselves don't recommend that children spend much time using the 3DS. Spending time with a 3DS myself, I ended up with a headache that reminded me of the bad old "Virtua Boy" days. This Pokemon Black bundle fit the bill: she wanted Pokemon Black more than anything, and this has got to be the coolest package a kid could get. The DSi is black with a really neat etching on the lid of two of the Pokemon new to the game. The unit comes with an extra stylus. The carrying case is just slightly bigger than the DSi and contains elastic slots for 6 games and the extra stylus, and of course it comes with a copy of Pokemon black, case, booklet and all. The DSi is different from the DS in that it does not have the older "Game Boy Advance" cartridge slot, it is slimmer and has a larger screen, and it adds a camera and a slot for SD memory so you can take pictures with it. There is also a browser included in the unit, but we have not played with the Wi-Fi and/or browser capabilities yet--that's what phones, tablets, and laptops are for. :) If you're a collector and you like keeping all your packaging, you should know that this product's container is very hard to open. Strong glue holds the box flaps down, and you'll need to completely open the top surface of the box all the way--inside it's got cardboard bands holding the DSi in place. We cut and ripped our way in, but I could see someone who liked to keep the box getting frustrated at how the glue disintegrates the cardboard. Beacuse this bundle is well-packaged, everything arrived from Amazon in perfect shape. The DSi charged within hours and was ready to play. There's a very thick booklet with detailed information on the DSi written in three languages, and of course you have a power adapter. If you're in the market for a new unit and you want to skip the 3DS, this bundle is a great deal for any Pokemon fan. The etched lid makes the unit look really neat and the entire bundle made my daughter feel very special on her birthday. ... show more

  • The DSi is a great handheld gaming device
Color: Pokemon Black Edition: Bundle
My son has been asking for a DSi for 2 years, we finally broke down and got him this one for Christmas. He loves it, I love it. I mean it looks great with the black and the pokemon designs, but besides that it is a very nice little device. The camera provides endless amounts of fun and with the ease of being able to game with friends in multiplayer games is just awesome. ... show more
