The Ninja Swirl by CREAMi is one of the most fun countertop appliances I’ve used in a long time. It takes the whole idea of homemade frozen dessert and turns it into something much more exciting than a basic ice cream maker. What really sets it apart is that it can do both scoopable ice cream and soft-serve, so it feels much more versatile than a standard frozen dessert machine. If you’ve ever wanted to make your own soft-serve at home without buying a commercial machine, this is probably one of the closest and most practical options out there. Setup takes a little planning because the base has to be frozen for at least 24 hours before processing, and the manual says the pint should be frozen flat on a level surface, not at an angle. That means this is not a last-minute dessert appliance — you need to think ahead — but once you understand that workflow, it becomes pretty easy to use. The machine also has a lot of parts, including the outer bowl, paddle, pints, lids, and the dispense components, so the first setup is a little more involved than something simple like a blender or mixer. Still, the instructions are clear enough once you get the hang of it. Performance is where the Swirl really shines. The scoop programs are designed for different dessert types like ice cream, lite ice cream, sorbet, gelato, frozen yogurt, milkshakes, and the CreamiFit setting for high-protein or lower-sugar recipes. The soft-serve side is the big draw, though, and it does a great job creating a texture that looks and feels close to real soft serve.
