  • I struggled with this purchase...
Let me start by saying that I didn’t buy this accessory until the cost had dropped to a bit over $300. When I first bought my d800, Nikon was asking for something ridiculous like $600 for this, and I simply refused to pay that. I love Nikon products, but it still annoys me that they stick it to their loyal customers with their peripherals. Well, that and the fact that I have found the customer service sucks… but I digress. Originally, I bought the Meike third-party digital grip and it worked well for years. All I can say is that it did its job, period. It didn’t feel good, because it was hard plastic, and the directional button was way too loose, sometimes I would move the control point to the right when I wanted it to move upwards etc. Again, it functioned, and for the price I was vary pleased with it. Fast forward a couple of years, and I lost tray that allowed me to use the Nikon batteries in the grip. At that point, I went online and looked into getting a new tray and came to the conclusion that maybe I should just order a new grip. I am not going to lie, while the Meike was functional, I always wanted the Nikon grip. At $300 I decided to pull the trigger and am glad I did. The Nikon grip just screams quality. The multi-directional feels just like the one on the camera, and the rubber grip feels great. With the Meike, I always knew that the vertical grip was an accessory. With the Nikon version, I actually feel like it is part of the camera. Once I attack the grip, and screw it down, it becomes part of the camera, as if it was manufactured with the vertical grip attached. I really like that! The buttons all feel great, and I feel confident carrying the camera just holding the vertical grip, I would never do that with the Meike! In the end, I really wanted the Nikon version, and now that it is a bit more reasonably priced, I was willing to pay a few hundred for a quality accessory. I like knowing that the equipment was designed to work together, and is made of the highest-quality materials. I also like the weather sealing this grip offers. I do shoot a lot outdoors, and while I don’t shoot in anything extreme, I do sometimes shoot in fog or a slight drizzle. I guess fundamentally I am paying for peace of mind. I like knowing that all my stuff will work, exactly when and how I want it to. I never had a problem with the Meike but always worried that I would have a problem. It just felt cheap, and I was always waiting for it to conk out on me… I hope that makes sense. The Nikon grip just inspires confidence. You know it is up for the job, and won’t let you down! Is it worth the extra money? That really depends on you. I’m a bit of a worrier, and I am willing to pay for peace of mind and a build quality that leaves me smiling. For many, however, I am aware that this would make no sense. The Meike never gave me a problem, and got the job done, so what why would I worry. I guess I really don’t have an answer for that expect that the cheap plastic constantly lead me to think it was going to break, and I would never use it any even fog much less a light rain. With the Nikon, however, I don’t even need to think about it. If the camera can do it, the vertical grip is up for coming along! ... show more

  • Essential add-on to the Nikon D800
Although the big DSLRs like my Nikon D800 are already heavy, I like the feel much better with one of these grips added on. It makes the camera much more comfortable to hold vertically, and I find that the extra heft and surface area actually let me hold the camera a bit more steadily. I also like the fact that it can take a variety of batteries, from Nikon's rechargeable batteries, to conventional AA's. I find that a set of lithium AA's gets me well over 2500 shots, and they're easy to replace anywhere. Attaching one also boosts the frame rate of your camera, though that's really secondary to me. Construction quality is what you'd expect from Nikon's pro-grade gear. It's rugged, well-sealed against dirt and moisture and will probably last longer than the camera it's attached to. It has the expected tripod adapter on the bottom, and generally, the only time you'll want to remove it from the camera would be to access the battery in the camera itself. Still, most people complain about two things on these devices. One, the product is essentially the same as the MB-D10 you might have used on your Nikon D300, but the older unit doesn't fit on the newer camera bodies. I was in this situation myself, and it was certainly frustrating to need to buy a new grip when my old one seemed almost identical. Complaint number two is generally the price. At the list price of over $600 (US), this seems like an extravagant accessory, and I'm not sure I would have paid that much for mine. There are third-party versions of this same grip that are much less expensive. Still, Amazon offers the MB-D12 at about a 40% discount, putting it right about the same price as I paid for my MB-D10. Overall, this is a great accessory for your D800/D800E, and in spite of the cost, I wouldn't live without it. ... show more

  • A must have for the Nikon D810!
The Nikon MB-D12 is an excellent accessory for the Nikon D810. At first it may seem to add a little bulk but the more it was used the more comfortable it feels. Having the shutter button and adjustment wheels while in portrait mode is famtastic and just feels right. The more expensive dslrs such as the D4 and D5 already have this built in, and the D810 feels alward without it now. This is a battery pack so lets talk battery life. You jave several options here. You can add am additional D810 battery and double your life. You may also use the d5's larger battery, however you will need a seperate charger for that battery. Finally the MB-D12 comes with the option to use AA batteries instead of the camera batteries. Some say why bother with AA batteries. This comes in very handy if you are shooting a wedding or are not near a charger and you are out of battery life. In a pinch you can put some AA batteries in and keep shooting, a feature you can not enjoy without this battery pack. In closing this battery pack doubles my battery life, adds easier controls while shooting in portrait mode and honestly just makes the camera balance feel batter (my opinion). If you have a D810 and are on the fence about this battery pack, get it you wont regret it! ... show more
