  • Excellent Purchase - More than the sum of its parts.
Style: w/ 18-140mm Set: Base
More than the sum of its parts. I own a number of cameras that on paper are fundamentally equivalent to the D7200. These are mainly Sony offerings and I have a lot of experience with these competitive products. Often when you are trying to address the 'Quality' of something as complicated as a modern DSLR it is hard to define one feature that makes the camera outstanding. I feel the Nikon D7200 consistently produces high quality images - even when pushed to its performance limits. This camera is my now my 'go to' generic unit, The 18-140 lens is ideal, the unit is tough and weather resistant (I'm rough on gear), the focusing/metering system is excellent - though many of the Sony camera's I own on paper are supposedly superior - in the field this is just not the case. On the down side the menu system is a tad antiquated (though the Sony menu system is also a little odd) - I'm not a big WiFi. BT or Video person - so I cannot comment on this - I use drone technologies for video and a dedicated video camera (Sony) - I use the D7200 for traditional still images. In this price range, I really think this camera is hard to beat - I had considered other products - Pentax K70, and a myriad of Canon offerings - even Nikon's next offering in this class cannot match the D7200 - this mystifies me a little. As a final note, this was a replacements for a Nikon D7100 that I lost in deep water (long story) - there is supposedly little difference on paper between the 7100 and 7200 Nikons - in reality, not so - the D7200 is a much better camera when reviewed in the field - which really did surprise me based on reviews stating the difference was marginal - it is not. In summary - I'm super happy with the purchase and I learned a valuable lesson - cameras may have similar specifications on paper - it is only when they are used as an integrated system that real judgments can be used. ... show more

  • I'm a REAL photographer again! I'm a REAL photographer again!
Style: w/ 18-140mm Set: Base
It had been a long time since I had time for photography and I was not sure I really needed a DSLR when there are so many decent point and shoot systems out there. But I am really glad I took the chance on this camera. I had forgotten how much I loved photography and how good I actually was. This camera challenges me to make critical decisions about my photography and gives me the tools to execute on the decisions I make. I jumped right back in and am shooting almost entirely on manual mode and the quality of my shots is outstanding (most of the time ;-). I am trying to give the Program modes a shot at making some of the decisions for me - especially when I am not in a thinking mood, and just want to shoot like a P&S and they do a great job. I'll never make money off my photography but I have quickly become the defacto photographer for every family event and it is always with me on my hikes and travels and has all the settings I need to switch from street to landscape to portraiture depending on where I am at any given moment. I have a long way to go before I master all the intricacies but this system has reawakened a passion in me and makes me feel like a kid again, exploring a talent that I had let go completely dormant. If you can commit some time to practice and want the flexibility and power that a DSLR can give you, the D7200 is a great camera for prosumers and has a decent selection of DX lenses. It would be nice if Nikon would invest in super wide DX lenses the way they do for FX but off brand manufacturers are filling the space nicely. Unless you need massive enlargements I doubt you will ever miss the full format system. ... show more

  • Great Buy Great Buy
Style: w/ 18-140mm Set: Base
The D7200 is a work horse' I spend nine hours out in the city testing and learning the D7200 I ran all the function that i could make myself aware of and for the type of photography i do. Coming from the D5200/5300/5500 models I am in love with the D7200. ISO is off the chart as far as low light goes' This is the best DSLR that Nikon offers with the best low light ability as far as I am aware. also I've heard about the Burst mode is not that good on the the D7200'' Well I disagree! I am not a bird photographer so I don't need that 10\FPS But! I did test the CH on all modes including RAW-14 BIT and 1.3X crop (18X12); I got about 8-9 FPS going onto 1.3X on JPEG (M) after exhausting the battery on full RAW at DX (24X16) @7 FPS. The lens 18-140mm NIKKOR DX AF S 1:3.5-5.6G ED is an all around lens that works great and its not the top quality glass that I would like to have' But its a good lens. I do own other lens including a Rokinon 10mm wide angle for stellar photography so all my accessories are good with the D7200. all I got was an extra battery and two SD cards (Extreme)64G. The NFC works great no issues and the WiFi is build in no issues with that. I will update this review and add more pictures as I progress with the D7200 ... show more

  • Wonderful
Style: w/ 18-140mm Set: Base
There have been so many reviews already posted, that I do not feel that I have much to add here. The camera works great and feels great. I am retiring my D300 to become a "backup" camera. Also, do not fail to notice that this is 24 M pixels! Pictures are amazing. I was thinking of a full-size Nikon, but now that desire is fading away. The ONLY issue that bothers me is that Nikon does not offer many telephoto lenses in DX format. OK, I could always get a full-sized lens, but that would be heavy and expensive. And, NO, I do not want an extender, as optimal sharpness is important to me. Bottom Line: So, just BUY it: You'll be happy. The 18-140 lens is also great - for casual shooting, it is all your really need, although I keep a fisheye (10.5mm) in my camera bag, as well as a wonderfully sharp wide angle zoon. ... show more

  • Nice upgrade from my D5100
Style: w/ 18-140mm Set: Base
I recently purchased this camera to replace my D5100. There was nothing wrong with my old camera, but I wanted to upgrade anyway. The kit lens does a great job of being a nice walk around lens. I don't find myself swapping lenses nearly as much. I also really like the built in wifi feature. I took some photos at a nephews graduation and afterwards I was able to drop them into the family's phones so they could do the usual uploads to social media and email them to other family. Have 2 SD slots is a nice touch, as you can set one to store images in JPEG and the other in RAW. While I did like the flip out screen on my D5100, I didn't use it all that often, so I don't think I will miss it much. I think this camera is a great stepping stone before going to full frame. ... show more

  • Nikon Hit a Home-run with this Camera
Style: w/ 18-140mm Set: Base
I am a serious amateur photographer who has also sold some of my work over the years. I started digital photography with a Nikon D70 and subsequently upgraded to a D80. When my D80 began to malfunction on a recent extended photo safari in the Four Corners area (due to operator error it turns out) I had the D7200 expedited to the RV park that was my home away from home at the time. The ergonomics, controls and software are very similar to my other Nikons but going from the D80 to this camera is like going from the Wright Brothers to landing on the moon. The software of this camera gives the user so much control over such a variety of factors in taking photographs it is incredible to me and at age 70 I may never fully master all the potential this camera brings to the table. Maybe the most outstanding feature of this camera is its' low light capabilities and the wide range of ISOs available. Also, having the 18-140mm lens means that I am more rarely using my longer lenses, for many amateurs it could prove to be the only lens you need. As well, over the years I have found Nikon customer service/support to be excellent. There are other very good cameras out there of course but I have cast my lot with Nikon for many years now and have been totally satisfied with my choices including this D7200. I highly recommend this camera - lens combination. ... show more

  • An extremely capable workhorse - probably the ultimate DX-Format DSLR
Style: w/ 18-140mm Set: Base
I have used Nikon DX-format DSLR cameras for almost a decade now. I started with a D40 that lasted me probably over 100k images. A few upgrades later I have the D7200 camera. I mainly do travel photography but am expecting my first child and thought it would be appropriate to get a new camera that can capture video just as well as it can take photos. This camera has a LOT of new features that I am still learning. I have spent the majority of my time with the camera shooting bracketed sets of images for HDR shots. I absolutely love how easy this is to use and it has enabled me to take a lot more shots that I am able to adequately expose via merging them in SW later. The customization offered is unparalleled in any other camera I have used. I had a number of DX lenses so I never considered changing brands. This camera should last me many years and I look forward to documenting my daughter's early years with it. The predefined user programmable modes will allow me to setup different go-to setups for a certain lens, for example. I really will enjoy learning these features.
