  • Merry Christmas to me!
Waited a long time to save up for this camera. Finally the kit came out with the 18-140 lens combo and that was the ticket! To top it all off, I was able to time my purchase so amazon was awarding 4% cash back, giving away a camera backpack and a good 32GB sandisk SD card (not the normal generic amazon SD card) so financially it all was a blessing. As for the camera, I came from a D300. The D7100 is very much an upgrade both in image quality and in operation. Menus are intuitive, buttons are close to the D300's so that I didn't have to learn much, but there is a lot of additional functionality that just adds to the operation to make it easier to use and produce more keeper photos. Body is a little lighter and smaller than the D300 so that is actually a blessing since I don't want to lug around all that weight anymore. Everything fits great in my hands. The lens is exactly what I wanted for a walk-around lens. Covers all the focal lengths I normally use and the VRII allows me to get away with the slower apertures. (When I want to do really critical imaging in low light with faster shutter speeds, I still have my 17-55 so all is good. Highly recommended for the photo enthusiast (although with the release of the D3300, someone who can wait may want to wait until the photokina to see if Nikon releases a D7200!) I'm just glad I got this for Christmas for myself so I could capture all those moments during the holiday season. ... show more

  • More Like an Owl or a Cat in low light
I'm an amateur photographer and the the Nikon D7100 is pricey so I had to think hard about buying it (especially since lenses and other add-ons run the price up pretty fast). I've only had it one day but I'm extremely pleased with it; it has exceeded my expectations. Here's one test I've done in some detail. I was sick of low light performance by my previous cameras (grainy pictures, slow shutter response, basically worthless performance). First evening I had the D7100 I went out in the fading twilight and shot in a nearby public garden (the camera was set on Auto and with no flash). The pictures were superb. The shutter response was instantaneous. The camera took soft autumn colors that my eyes no longer could see in the twilight. Later, inside, I shot a test picture in a dark room with just a bit of light coming in through an open door behind me. My eyes could only see the vaguest of shapes of furniture and walls. The camera took a picture mostly in grey tones that showed all the objects in the room clearly. Again it was set on Auto with no flash so I didn't have to do anything complicated to get the result. The most interesting thing is the room has a wall hanging that is red and the picture showed the wall hanging clearly red. I don't know what owls or cats see in the dark, but this camera is more like an owl or a cat than a human when it is shooting in low light. I'm excited to learn more about what this camera can do. ... show more

  • Don't think you can get a better cropped frame camera and image quality than with the ...
Spent a lot of time researching dSLR choices and went with the D7100 to replace a Nikon D90. Don't think you can get a better cropped frame camera and image quality than with the D7100. Got this even though I knew the D7200 was just around the corner--none of the D7200 upgrades are especially useful to me and subsequent reviews show the D7200 image quality is no better. Great deals on the D7100. Was tempted by full frame, but don't like the prices and feel the future is mirrorless. The D7100 will provide great IQ, and good low light and focusing performance for my needs for the next few years until the next leap in sensor technology and until mirrorless systems mature and come up with better lens selections and autofocusing that can compete with dSLRs. Cell phones are hurting camera sales, but if picture quality is a priority for you, a dSLR is light years beyond any cell phone camera. Nikon has some less expensive dSLRs than the D71/7200 that take pictures just as good but lack the advanced options of the D7100 if you don't need those features. ... show more

  • After upgrade from D7000 - 5 stars on the camera - 3 or 4 on the lens
I recently upgraded from a D7000 and I'm seeing much more difference in my images than I expected. Ken Rockwell says don't expect it to be that much better: http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/comparisons/2013-04-09-dslrs/ but I don't agree. I am using it more carefully. My main issue with the images I had been getting was less sharpness than I expected in the architectural shots I do from time to time for work. With the new camera I've stopped bracketing manually or pressing the shutter button by hand - always use either the remote or interval timer shooting. (Yes 7000 did have these features, but did not allow 5 brackets as this one does - to my mind need 5 to bracket automatically.) Main downside with tripod use is that Nikon does not allow locking the mirror up for a whole sequence - still, shooting hands-off with a delay between mirror up and shutter firing, I am getting very crisp shots, and the extra resolution is nice too. Now the lens - VR is wonderful but get noticeable vignetting at 18-20mm and at 140mm. So I will not be retiring my old 24-120mm - still need it for the professional work because, used on a tripod, it is a much better lens. ... show more

  • Big band for the buck
Love the picture quality and the versatility of the 18 to 180 mm lens that came with it. Really no need to get another lens for what I need it for.

  • Amazing camera that has provided great shots while backpacking through the country.
Have had a blast getting used to and learning this camera. Limited experience with the product thus far but have been so impressed with the shots I have gotten, even though I barely know what I am doing. I have this camera teamed with an additional 35mm prime lens and love it. Also, this is a very sturdy camera. I have taken it on many backpacking trips where it has held up extremely well. it definitely has some war wounds to prove it as well. ... show more
