  • Great lens
Color: Black
So far, I really love this lens. It can't nail the detail of my manual 50mm f/1.8, nor is it fast enough to freeze motion, but it's a great zoom lens to just carry around. A lot of pictures don't need the kind of detail I get with the prime lens, and it's really nice to be able to pick a focal length, compose, and shoot--knowing that the auto-focus and VR are going to capture exactly what I want most of the time. The manual focus ring sucks, it just slides around, no dampening at all apparently. If you need to capture something fast, use the autofocus. The manual ring will do if the auto's just a little off, but it seems to work really well. Two switches--VR on/off and M/A for focus mode. Zoom ring is comfortable, focus ring sucks. This is a G lens--no aperture ring. Image quality is great, no complaints here. As I said, it doesn't quite match the sharpness of my 50mm prime, but of course, I wouldn't expect it to. It's excellent for its purpose, and I'm very happy with the quality. Focuses at around 5.5" I got a little closer than that on manual at the wide end if I remember right. The depth of field was about half an inch around that point, but it's not a steep drop off (so, no really great subject separation) Still good, though. Didn't notice any ghosting or flare described earlier, but I don't do highly contrasted scenes with bright lighting, like city nightscapes. Or at least, I don't use a zoom for it. VR works well. I didn't have any problem getting sharp images at this speed anyway, but it definitely helps with natural lighting. Little heavy on the D40, tips the balance to the lens a bit. Not enough to need the grip, but I bet the old ED II (which is still the kit lens with the D40) was a little more balanced. When I can get the VR version for a Franklin (flawless refurbished from Cameta, 90 day warranty), though, I can't argue. Really happy with it, definitely grab one if Cameta has a refurb. It's well worth the retail price, as well. ... show more

  • Fantastic light weight lens
Color: Black
This is a great story lens. It is extremely light-weight and incredible sharp. I find myself rarely using filters, as this lens does not really need much improvement. I see no chromatic aberration with this lens, and no vignetting that I can see. The VR mode is great for hand held, and easily turns off for tripod shooting. The only time I put this lens in auto-focus is if I am handing my camera to someone else. This focus ring on this lens is easy to use, and I see no drift from the focal length ring. All-in-all, this is a must own lens, not just for the money. I also have a 27mm Nikkor prime lens, and find this lens to even be a better portrait lens. My next purchase will probably be the Nikkor 55 to 300mm lens for a matching set! With this lens, I have taken a picture of a bumble-bee in flight, and it's wings look as though they are sitting still. A truly sharp, fast lens. My only complaint about this lens, it is a bit too light. That's crazy sounding even from my own mouth; but I have a feeling that it's a plastic-body lens that will break if I look at it funny. Attached to a magnesium D200, it feels like an emergency spare tire on a Ferrari. With my heavy camera, it does feel more balanced than lets say a Sigma 300mm f4; but at the cost of how much durability? I guess light weight is a two way street. ... show more

  • Nice Little Bundle, Great Camera
This is my first SLR since my old Minolta XG-7. Ok, I'm dating myself, but I'm such a cheap date...lol. The unit was easy to understand, set up and start using. It is a bit trying on the patience to have to wait for the the battery to charge for an hour and half because I like to get my hands in right away with the thrill of having something new. From just shooting pictures in my back yard, the quality is incredible. I love the auto focus feature. SLR cameras have come a long way in 30 years. The onboard editing and filtering features are nice and work well. I've ordered the zoom lense for this camera and can't wait for it to come since I love to shoot landscapes and wildlife. Living in Virginia there is so much beauty to shoot. Plus there is a family of deer that come wandering out into a field next to my back yard and I've been wanting to take some really cool pictures of them without scaring them away. I can't wait for my friend's reactions when they see some of my new pictures pop up in my digital frame. I'm so happy to be back into SLR-land again. I remember all kinds of cool times with my old camera and I can't wait to make some new memories with this one. My old point and shoot digital was ok but this by far takes the most incredible images I've ever seen. The pictures look like ones out of a magazine. ... show more

  • Just needed a simple walk around lens
Color: Black
I have been a Nikon person since 1958 and have owned much of the line since the original "F" and even two Nikon range finder cameras, one of which I equipped with an adapted Agenieuex 90 mm/f/2.8 lens for street work. I could talk your head off on the history of Nikon glass, the good, the great and the dogs. Every maker has had ample of each. I have a lens cabinet full of lenses that regular workouts and I select whatever I want depending on what I intend to do on any given day. That brings me to the words: walk around lenses and kit lenses; the first implying, correctly, that one is not setting out on a specific assignment or self-assigned photo shoot..its a casual thing, and the second terms "Kit Lens has come to imply a consumer/pro-sumer less than stellar, cheap lens. OK...so let's look at this less than bank breaking optic. Please note; I am a purist and reach for a single focal length prime whenever I can or carry a zoom of exceptional quality. I have other lenses that cover the focal length of this lens with a D700, a wonderful piece of equipment, but I chose to acquire this lens for the lightest carry around possible. Yes it is, (The popular term of derision "plasticity") but, and there are several of them,; it works well and is sharp! While I am not enamored of the plastic mount; I did not acquire the lens with the idea of subjecting it to the rigors and ravages of situations that will do it in. I don't abuse my equipment by either design or stupidity. It is what it is; one of best "Kit Lenses" you are going to encounter! I have 6 (16 x 20 prints) on my desk now taken with this lens and they are perfect. I am not to give any construction Kudos here, but if you know what you are doing the optics are fine and the out put excellent. That is a helluva deal for this price. I have other Nikon lenses that cover the range, Tamron, Sigma and Tokina as well. They all are fine lenses with more sturdy build, and heavier, bulkier. This is a true travel light lens that will serve the budget conscious or aging photographer such as myself when all you are doing is carrying your camera for whatever happens to appeal to you. At the price you can't go wrong. Just remember it won't take the abuse of a $500 to $2000 lens, I am not going to engage the nit pickers and pixel peaking self-ordained experts of the world often found in these reviews. The proof is the final print laying on the desk. A the widest angle of the lens all of the cautions of good technique in using more extreme wide angle lenses apply, framing, focus, positioning and attention to perspective in composition. Let it suffice that one could employ the stellar Nikon 16/35/F4 zoom, big bucks, and produce horrid photos if all one believes is that by laying out that cash is going to solve all the problems of working with extreme wide angle optics. Study, practice, experimentation, experience and honest self-appraisal of your effort(s) are far more important. There are many fine cameras and lenses in this world. They don't produce exquisite photographs; the photographer holding that camera does. To conclude; this is a "Kit Lens" inexpensive, but don't pass it up. If you want something of more sturdy build; opt for it; pay for it, or up grade when you are ready. I'm not inclined to let the lens go any time soon as it is travel light and competent. (Ed. Dickau) PS:Re. VR..Excellent! ... show more

  • Perfect condition and fast shipper.
Color: Black
Works perfectly! Very happy with this lens. I have a Nikon D3000 camera. This lens replaces the kit lens that came with the camera which became very stiff after many years. The shipper shipped very quickly and it was packaged well.

  • Excellent Versatile Lens
Color: Black
I purchase this lens for my D200 because I had been using a 55-200mm VR lens to film my children playing sports. I found that if I wanted to take general photos of people and thigs that were relatively close, the low end of the 55mm wasn't going to work. This is a great lens, and an upgrade over the older 18-55mm ii with non VR. I love the image stabilization because I used to get blurry pictures in the low light shots ie; evenings and dark environments. The Nikkor 18-55mm VR does lack ED which lends to lens flare and ghosting. Of course you can solve this by taking pics in the direction of the sun or bright lights which can be a chore and not always accomadating. If lens flare is and issue, you will want to stick with the NON-VR 18-55mm as it is a better lens during day time with ED. Overall, this is a fantastic lens that will work in almost all situations and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive versatile lens. ... show more

  • The "Go-To" for the Nikon DX Line
Color: Black
This should be your standard go-to lens for any DX Nikon. For old school shooters like me, it is the equivalent of a 27 to 82.5 mm lens from the "old days" of shooting 35 mm film. If that doesn't register, it goes from moderate wide angle to a slight (portrait length) zoom. I've used it on a D70 and then a D7100, and unless you are working for National Geographic the quality is excellent. Fit and finish are very good, although it is not like the old days when Nikkor lenses were made in Japan; I believe this one was made in Vietnam. You will probably want to pair it with a longer telephoto, but Nikon makes an (relatively) affordable ($159 on Amazon Prime) 70-300 zoom (again, 105-450 equivalent for the old folks) that gives you a combined continuous range of 18-300. Unfortunately, if you want to go wider angle things get pricey; the best is a 16-85 for $499 and they go up, up, up from there. I am eyeing that one up because it replicates my old 24 mm film lens that I loved, but zoomed back to 18 this lens handles most situations. Have been using Nikons since 1970 and have never lost a shot to equipment failure. ... show more
