If you're looking on Amazon for a scribe tool like this one you already know there are many to choose from that are similar. Which company actually designed it I can't say, and since this is the only one I own I can't offer a comparison between brands. I ordered this brand because it is $12 cheaper than the Sakker. First I'll say it's a good design. I like it better than the FastCap scribe tool because this is more versatile. I'd bet money the pencil it comes with is a Thorvald, which is a quality carpenter's pencil so that's a good thing. Even the extra leads come in the same packaging as a Thorvald pencil. Where this tool looses points is in crude manufacture, fit and finish. This is no CNC cut tool. The edges and body of metal parts are still rough from coming out of the mold and the little thumb screw that tightens the pencil position was drilled and tapped at an off angle. In spite of being sloppily produced it'll still function and no doubt get the job done in the rare situations I need a transfer scribe. One note about the thumb screws, they are tiny and grouped closely together so if you have sausage fingers you will find this tool frustrating to set up accurately. I may cut slots in the screw heads for adjustment with a screwdriver. Other manufacturers of this design may offer better quality fit and finish but that's a guess on my part.

This is inexpensive and that shows in the quality. It “works” but the tolerances are poor and the joints have slop and move even when tightened.

Well not totally useless..the pencil is nice. I tried everything to get this to work to scribe a wall. Limited success. I watched videos of similar tools but this never seemed to be able to position right and the screws didn't stay screwed. Very disappointing
