  • Awesome for Raspberry Processing
I used this for the 1st time this weekend processing 25 lbs of raspberries into preserves. It is AMAZING!!! We have a small farm and process fruit not suitable for retail sales into preserves. I had been processing raspberries in the past caveman style with a strainer and tablespoon, which about killed my arms after hours of crushing, never mind trying to balance the bowl and strainer during the process. By comparison, this sits soundly on your work surface, and will support a bowl up to 7" in diameter (no bigger). A smaller bowl is okay because the juice will stick to the side of the unit and drip from the very bottom. So while it may sound counter intuitive, even a 3-4" bowl will be fine. The wooden pestle is perfectly matched to the unit so you can effortlessly crush whatever you're processing with a simple rotary motion. I thought this unit might present problems based on some of the other reviews, but it is sturdy and easy to use. The only possible negative is that the wooden pestle picked up some of the raspberry juice at the tip where the coating either wore off or wasn't present to begin with, so it stained red, but that was it for my complaint list. Anecdotally, to keep the seed count down in the preserves, I crushed half the raspberries for juice and ended up with almost 5 pounds of seeds (out of 12.5 pounds of fruit). Wow! If you're going to process raspberries, you definitely want to have this on your side. Looking forward to trying this for grape jelly processing. ... show more

  • Works for what I bought it to do
Now that I own one, I will likely use it for things I never knew I need it, but I actually bought it for processing lilikoi juice. When they come into season, we end up with hundreds, so we juice them and freeze the juice for use all year. Lilikoi have to be separated from their seeds and a membrane...and both are a pain in the butt. Strainers work but are hard to clean. Blenders can break everything loose, but you also get small seed chips which slip through. With this chinois, we've been able to through everything in and use the wooden pestle to break everything up. It has made things much easier. The mark down to four stars was actually for minor, but annoying things. The pestle could fit the chinois better. A lot of stuff gets pushed around instead of through the holes. It is easy to clean, but the tips tends to collect stuff if your are not careful in cleaning. Finally, we do not use the stand for much more than a holder. We put he chinois into a bowl to use it. If we use the stand to have it over another collector, the legs cannot handle a lot of pressure without deforming. At a little over $40, you expect sturdier legs. ... show more

  • Great Quality
This worked so nicely for apple sauce! My mom and I had been using my grandmother's antique ricer for years. This is way easier to clean. Nice quality stainless steel.

  • Not a "fine mesh" at all (but seems very sturdy)
Purchased primarily to strain fruit & vegetable pulp. Description says "Strainer features a fine mesh", but it's neither fine nor a mesh (screen). It's sheet metal with apx 2mm holes in it. So while it seems very sturdy & would probably be a great choice for making jams or sauces, if you do need a fine mesh I wouldn't recommend this. The holes are too large to strain out pieces smaller than 1.5-2mm, but they're space rather far apart. So it simultaneously lets too much pulp through but also requires a lot of work to push it through. But again, does seem like it's pretty well made & was the most affordable option I found. Stand & solid wood pestle seemed high quality too. Just not fine or mesh. ... show more

  • Works great and well made.
I bought this specifically for making seedless blackberry jam. It worked perfectly and effortlessly for this purpose. Good quality build, it is very stable and holds quite a bit of berries at a time. I'm very happy with this purchase.

  • Great for removing jelly seeds.
I would rather have something electric but this year we did it by hand and this worked wonderfully.
