Pick a different computer. This isn't the one you want.

Buggy. Expect to have to restart the thing a lot. The USB ports were spotty on detecting anything plugged into them at first. Would have to wiggle them or unplug and replug things back in over and over. Now they don't work AT ALL. This thing is only a couple months old. I'm contacting the manufacturer to try to get a replacement now. Also, sometimes it randomly thinks the top half has disconnected when it is still plugged in. Weird freezing up or trouble turning on. I have to long press the on button to get it to remember how to turn on sometimes. Like, 15 to 30 seconds long, then it's like, "OH YEAH! That means turn on!" I've been really unhappy with this computer. I wish I'd picked something else.

USB & SD recognized briefly or not; screen flares & ebbs; hours of tech support no help

No stars. I bought two of these on Amazon this year. One seems to work; the other never did. Have spent hours with Microsoft tech support getting nowhere. At around $2,600 a pop (plus tax), the computer should work or be replaced with a brand new one that works. Microsoft's idea of standing by its products is to offer me an iffy "updated" replacement computer and take back the one I have, as if I'd accept a used unboxed PC and hand over my dysfunctional Microsoft computer with all my files I can't wipe clean and trust Microsoft's promise that the computer would be wiped clean and my private data wouldn't be downloaded. I trusted Microsoft's initial promise that it was selling me a working computer. Why would I ever again trust anything Microsoft promised? Maybe you'll be lucky if you buy two of these and one of them works. A 50% chance of a high-priced computer working doesn't seem a good bet to me.

Defective Product!

I bought this product and the speakers would crackle when playing sounds. I had Microsoft Support replace it. The replacement began to have the same speaker problem. Then one day the replacement just froze and stopped working. I'm currently trying to get a refund from Microsoft but they are stringing me along. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT AND DO NOT TRUST MICROSOFT SUPPORT!

MY BEST SURFACE PC EVER

I owned the Surface 1,3 and 4 before jumping into my book 3. Very very happy with my purchase. It's worth every penny.

Why I bought my second Surface Book

I’ve owned a Surface Book 1 for nearly 5 years. It has served very well, and because it has lasted so long, it was an exceptional value, averaging less than $400 a year to operate, while giving me far fewer frustrations than a $1000.00 computer would. When the older one began to show signs of age, I knew I would replace it with the updated model. It’s simply that good. The Surface Book 3 (SB3) looks identical to it’s first generation cousin. It has the same form factor, same odd hinge, same gorgeous screen, and mostly the same keyboard (the SB3 eliminates one of the keyboard brightness keys and the insert key, replacing them with screen brightness up and down – which I think is an improvement) . My newer Surface Book comes with a roomy 32 GB of ram, 512 GB of storage (256 can work, but it leaves little room to play with), and the 10th Gen i7 processer, and NVIDIA graphics GPU. This computer is very “lapable” (nod to Mary Jo Foley), which is where I use it 90% of the time. Everything about the SB3 is snappier and faster. Apps launch more quickly, web pages render more quickly, menu clicks respond instantly, and because it has 4 times more Ram, Windows does not have to shuffle stuff around when multi-tasking – that means more open tabs at a time without system slowdowns. Even the screen detachment feature, which turns the SB3 into a tablet, is significantly faster separating in about a second, rather than the 3 to 5 of the older version. Boot times, sleep times – all faster. It’s possible to game on this computer, though I’m not a gamer. My daughter who also bought this machine says rendering of fast, 3D graphics is fast and stutter free. The SB3 has received criticism for not getting a design refresh, but to that I say, “so what.” It is working well. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The design parameters seem to have found the sweet spot in the inevitable compromises of laptops. This mix has created the best all-around laptop in most computing situations. You might find a laptop better to some single use purpose (gaming for example) but you will not find one that does all computer tasks equally well across the board. And, can we please put to rest the tired criticisms of the hinge – it works great, is easy to carry when closed, and positions the screen precisely where you want it. It enables tent and studio modes as well. But here is my number 1 reason to buy the latest SB3 – it has, hands down, the best keyboard and touchpad of any laptop on the market – windows, mac or Chrome. The touchpad is so good that I rarely use my (Bluetooth) mice anymore. The keyboard is perfectly laid out to allow fast touch typing. The Keys are at just the right height and give great tactile feedback. They can be back lit at two levels or left dark. I’ve noticed that I make fewer typos on the new SB3 and I think that’s simply because the old one was wearing out – still working just not as “springy.” I’ve tried the Dell XPS laptop and had to return it because the space bar was badly designed it would add or drop spaces. The Lenovo series had a terrible placement of home / end keys that would send your cursors all over the screen when you missed the return key. Even the Surface Laptop is just not quite as responsive as the SB3 – even the metallic one. So if you spend a lot of time on a laptop, and you write, or touch type, or program, get this device. The elimination of keyboard frustrations alone will compensate you for the extra cost.
