I've used a few models from the balance steel/composite toe line and have loved them all. Having worked a number of labor jobs in my life I have some foot and leg issues exacerbated by long days on my feet. Finding shoes that made life less painful and that still met safety standards was a frustrating and expensive process, of the styles and brands that I went through in that time. This line won in just about every category, everytime (there were a few other brands that I felt had better traction, but these were sufficient and for my environments acceptable). Did I think I'd ever have a work shoe in my life that would take over as my every-day-wearers? No. Was I fortunate enough to find some? Definintely. Beyond comfort, these shoes have saved my toes in more situations than I can recall, and, in that vein are durable enough to do so and continue on. Obviously wear depends on use and environment, but I, on average, got about a year or two out of each everyday use pair in conditions that were not too harsh (average work environments with lifting/climbing/crouching/foot travel, no heavy fluid/chem exposure, etc). I don't often dote on footwear, but this line was a game changer for me.

First off I just bought other NB sneakers (not safety shoes) because they make 4E wide and they ran a little on the small size, not these. Not only are they wide but the toe box is tall. I could easily have gone a half size smaller (or more). It feels like an ocean of room and for a guy with wide tall feet not having pressure on my toes is a welcome relief. Most safety shoes that are nice and wide are work boots. Fine if you are in a warehouse but I work in an office and on a manufacturing floor. I wanted something lighter and cooler. These fit my need perfectly. My only complaint is the insole. I think it's made out of plywood (just kidding). It's very firm. After about a week I replaced them.

The only real perks of these shoes is they are really wide and I like that most shoes I get aren’t wide enough for my feet. So on to the not so good things. One reason why I normally stay away from new balance is that they fall apart to easily. The material in the back of the shoe holding in your heel is cheap and ripped open within a month of having these shoes. Missed the deadline to return them or else I would have. The composite toe is okay, rubs my big toe too much though and causes blisters and such. The laces on these shoes are way too short. I don’t know what it is with shoe companies putting short laces on shoes now. They use to be too long, but I would rather have laces too long than too short any day. The inserts that are in these when you get them are crap, I had to put in some good ones right from the start. I guess I’m going back to sketchers after this experience. I thought maybe my bad luck with them before was just that my bad luck. Just shows that the quality is just lacking with their products.

Actually my second pair. Followed previous reviewers advice and ordered 1/2 size larger than normal. After 45 days or so had to give up and admit they were just not long enough. Ordered a second pair 1 full size larger than normal and they fit well. If you have any arch problems you will need aftermarket insoles as NB doesn't put much arch support at all in these. On the positive side, they are much lighter than steel toes and do seem to breathe well.

Construction Super. On feet all day and need to have the safety features. These feel like half the weight of the keens i used to wear, but still slap on a deck like a proper safety boot and provide the same level of protection. Build quality seems solid, and I bet these will last a year of daily jobsite for me. My only beef: The insoles they come with are paper thin garbage and being a stiffened safety shoe (and me being a 200lb guy), you will want to upgrade them immediately to a decent aftermarket set for comfort. After replacing the insoles, these are A+ and feel like wearing OSHA compliant running shoes. I also sprayed them with 3M for good measure since they really are just beefed-up running shoes not intended to be waterproof/resistant for site work. At a discount under $100, you really cant go wrong with these, after spending another $25 on comfy insoles for them.

You're looking for a pair of work shoes and they're going to walk about 5,000 steps a days. I recommend using these shoes if you need reinforced steel toes or reinforced tips. These are the shoes for you.
