This is the second one of these I bought. Like many homes, our ISP's router/WAP is installed in a bedroom closet on one side of the house. Halfway across the house the WiFi signal starts dying. Another dozen feet and the signal is almost gone. Installed one of these to extend the WiFi network to a home office and it worked great. Installed a second one to extend the WiFi network to the back of the house. Some caveats: I advise setting up the device using the Netgear Installation Assistant, where you connect wirelessly to the device and then go step by step to connect to your existing network. Netgear points you to their Nighthawk app, which you download on your phone and then continue with the setup. I prefer a direct connection to a network device when configuring it. And the BIG caveat: If the device advises there's a firmware update available, ignore it. I originally bought my first EAX20 directly from Netgear. Went through the setup and all was well. At the end of the setup it advertised a firmware update and I said yes. What should've happened was the device updates, reboots and all is well. What happened is the device updated, rebooted and never woke up again. It was stuck in a boot loop. Factory reset didn't work. 6+hours over 2 days on the phone w/Netgear support, going through their advanced "baseline reset procedure" didn't work. I finally got to return it to Netgear for a refund. Bought one from Amazon, set it up, IGNORING the firmware update and it's worked flawlessly. That was "the first one" I bought. With the second one, the firmware was different from the factory b/c it didn't advertise a FW update during the setup process. How ironic that the manufacturer's firmware update bricks their own device. This is a GREAT WiFi extender. There's no fan, so it's completely silent and it doesn't even get warm. It works GREAT. Just don't update the thing.

I selected this extender to supplement my Nighthawk R8000, which covers our 2100 sq ft home very well (x2 with great basement coverage as well), but it struggled to maintain connection with a newly installed exterior garage door video keypad (would disconnect when the garage door was closed). The seamless "mesh" feature was the main feature I was looking for and this one does the job, and gives a MAJOR boost to my network's WiFi reach... First the negatives: Installation was accomplished without the need to call customer service, but not without having to re-try some steps, after a few mistakes. The install process started out via the login to the Netgear app on my phone, which was previously connected to my router, but required creating a separate login account for this extender from a computer, plus establishing a separate Admin login password for management of the extender (write these down when you create them!). That's all well & good, but moving further through the installation steps, instructions were not clear when referring to "logging in" as I was left wondering "which account" to log into -- it was not always clear which of these THREE accounts it was referring to. Once I got past those issues through trial & error I finally had a successful installation that I can monitor/configure in the phone app -- but also had a time figuring which password on the app to get into the Extender from there (thankfully my phone is set to save passwords for future access!). The GOOD (and it's really good!): I installed the extender half-way between the router and the troubled exterior garage door Video Keypad, high atop a cabinet above our washer/dryer near the entrance to the garage. Not only did this solve our connectivity issue with the video keypad, but surprisingly extended our network's WiFi coverage well out to into the extremes of back yard on the opposite side of the house! I'm very happy with this unit and would highly recommend it!

It was quite a journey getting the EAX20 to work with my FIOS G1100 Router. The initial setup was fairly straight forward & in about an hour they were connected. However, the performance was lousy (single digit Megabits). This was traced to the EAX20 connecting the backhaul to the router using the 2.4GHz band instead of using the 5GHz band. After a couple of days of research & re-reading both Netgear and FIOS device manuals, I discovered they support the 5GHz differently. Netgear EAX20 supports 5GHz channels 36-48 and 149-161 (per their tech support page) FIOS G1100 supports 5GHz channels 36-48, 149-165 and 52-140 in auto mode. The G1100 WiFi settings showed it was connecting at 132 since the channel was deemed the best. This meant the EAX20 would fail to connect. I switched both to use the best channel I could find (36) & ta-da, they both connect fine & the EAX20 now uses the 5GHz band for the backhaul. My performance is acceptable (50-90Mbits) for downloads & mostly about 70% that speed for uploads (my service is 200Mbits; note the G1100 has a notoriously poor WiFi system, mostly the antennas I believe). Other issues: sometimes the EAX20 shows an error light & I have to reboot it (not as much now that a couple of FW upgrades have occurred). Also, sometimes the performance drops dramatically and I fix the issue by disconnecting then reconnecting devices, or I just reboot the EAX20. Bottom line, do I recommend it? Well, if there's not a better option for same money, then buy it. Just make sure you know the tech specs for both your router and the EAX20. For me, this is an interim solution as I wait for WiFi 6/Mesh technologies to mature, but I do plan on replacing the extender in a year or two.
