  • Installation was "awkward"
Style: 2-Pack
RBR850 router (1Gbps WAN port) and 1 Sat for my 3,800 sq ft house, salb on grade, no second story. I chose the 1Gbps WAN rather than the 10Gbps. By the time my microwave wireless ISP offers 1Gbps (currently they offer up-to 200Mbps and soon 500Mbps) and higher it’ll be time to upgrade the Orbi plus by then 10Gbps will be standard. If you have a fibre ISP or over 1Gbps cable service, then the 10Gbps would be reasonable. Buy what you forecast for the next 3+ years and don’t over do it. Others have mentioned set-up was not easy – it was a hot mess. The only instructions for the installation - download the Orbi App and use it, no more, no less. And if you don’t have a smartphone…so sad so sorry, I guess. My ISP only requires providing the MAC address. Once called and updated I started the installation via the App. It failed over and over. I fooled around with reboots of the Orbi and my iPhone – spent an hour and some no so choice language for a $600 rig. Bottom line, I had to call Tech Support (7:30PM MT). I was on hold for close to 30 minutes. Once connected the tech was good and walked me through alternative steps. What was needed: I had to disconnect WAN/ISP connection, reboot, connect to the Gateway Address (192.168.1.1) via a browser (not possible while the WAN was connected, I tried before calling), then configure via a browser, no Orbi App. The App was useless for MY INSTALLATION. This doesn't mean it won't work for all, it just didn't work for me. I wasted over an hour trying to troubleshoot and then another 30 minutes on hold, and about 15-20 mins with the off-shore tech guy. Once the router and sat were up and running, the App was handy for some things however setting Reserved IP addresses for a few devices had to done via the browser. I set my devices up: DHCP space is 192.168.20->.50, network gear 192.168.1.1 (gateway) to 192.168.1.9 (I used a Reserved Address of 192.168.1.2 for the Sat and space for more Sats if ever needed). 192.168.1.10-.19 are unused, no reason why, I just don’t use them. NAS is 192.168.201/202 (2 bonded 1Gbps wired ports) and the printer is 192.168.1.130, all Reserved Addresses. I don’t have that many devices, and this works well for me. I do need to set-up the Guest Network 2.4g for visitors/friends – it’s easy via a browser. The defaults work well for my use, as will for the vast majority. It would have been helpful if documentation, PAPER, recommended "If this happens try 1, 2, 3..." different ways to perform the initial installation, like the tech guy did. Just saying "Use the App" with no other documentation needs to be re-thought by Netgear. Why did I buy Orbi? Overall, I have had good luck for many years w/Netgear. My 4 to 5-year-old AC4000 Nighthawk wasn't allowing use of the 100Mbps of my ISP upgrade, it was capping off at around 15-20Mbps even with the latest firmware. I use a microwave service, no cable/fibre out here in my rural area, and 100Mbps is more than enough - this was an upgrade from 30Mbps, WAY better than the 1.5Mbps DSL Century Link has offered for 15 years. I've used Netgear Ethernet ProSafe Unmanaged Switches in my house for going on 20 years. Excellent devices, all 1Gbps. When we built this house 15 years ago, I ran UTP to areas where I knew I wanted wired access. Now with tablets, smartphones, guests, ect, wireless is really needed. TVs, DVRs, NAS, printers and such don't move around. Plus, if your home is not wired, then you really need a solid wireless set-up. Yes, Orbi is expensive. I read reviews of other mesh set-ups, asked my ISP what they have experienced with others (they serve rural communities in Colorado, are not a corporate thing, plus they are a small business with great engineers and service, so decided to spend the money on Orbi – for the price, Netgear should offer 1 year of Premium Support. Typically, once you are set-up, support is rarely needed – it’s the thought that counts when buying premium equipment. One router and a satellite extender was $600, if you buy a 4 or 5 pack or the 10Gbps option it’s very pricey – I expect more for this price tier. ... show more

  • Good signal but app needs help and limited settings available...
Style: 2-Pack
I originally thought this would be a great upgrade for my aging Netgear router. Came with two pieces, one a router and the other a Satellite. Each has 4 ports, which is great and it has its won dedicated backhaul band. So I installed them using the app(you can use the web page, but they seem to discourage that), which went ok. It seemed to see the satellite via the wireless backhaul and it started to see all my devices and that's when the fun began. In the app, I would see, say 40 devices and some would show as offline, when they would clearly be online, yet on the web page, I'd see 50 and they would all show online(the web page was just about always correct). The app, every time I would close and open it, would show other random devices offline and some would flat out disappear from the list. After many hrs, it would get a bit better as it would at least see all my devices but would still list some as offline when they were online. Even after a full reset, the app was not any better. Luckily I wasn't using Parental Controls, so this wasn't a massive deal, but it would be is I did need to use that. Beyond the mess of an app, while the Orbi does have a web page for settings, there still isn't really a lot of settings. You can't separate 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands. They will be lumped together as one network, with the Orbi deciding what band each device gets. You can turn off the 5ghz band though, if you need to connect something that can only do 2.4ghz(lot devices and such). When I had the app issues, I decided to hardwire the satellite to the router, so see if that would help. The system had no issues seeing the hardwired satellite, but I realized it is a waste of the 5ghz backhaul band because you cannot repurpose it to be used by devices. You only have use of the lower band for devices(also, hardwiring didn't help the app issues). The other issue I had was when the system reboots, the router always comes online well before the satellite. So all my devices see that and connect with the router, even when they are right next to the satellite. I have to reboot the device for it to connect to the proper node. They really need to make it so the router and satellites come online at the SAME time, so your devices see the closest first. It does come with built in security by Bitdefender that, if you pay, will also give you access to Bitdefnder Total Security to install on your PCs and such. However, this was another mess. While it recognized I had it installed on my PC, it wouldn't recognize it was installed on anyone's iPhone. So their security score would be low and they would warn you of having security notifications turned OFF, for no reason. So it made the security score worthless. Bit Defender doesn't seem too interested in fixing it because the iOS app hadn't been updated in 10 MONTHS. For an integrated security app, thats not good. Because of the app issues, limited overall setting, no way to split bands, no way to use the dedicated backhaul for devices and the way the system comes up on a reboot, I ended up returning it and went with the ASUS XT9. The ASUS XT9 is done the way they all should be. I was able to get 3 nodes(any 1 can act as the router and two satellites) for the price of just 2 orbis(with the 3rd node, I now have coverage in my backyard). There a A LOT of settings like allowing you to repurpose its dedicated backhaul band for devices to use, if you hardwire the nodes, allows you to BIND a device to a specific node, so you don't have to worry if a device you connect to the distant node and has build in security by McAfee and parental controls(all for FREE). And the best part is, you can plug your iPhone or Android into the USB port and it will tether to the router and be used as a BACKUP internet source, if you normal one goes out. Oh and their app is spot on with regards to what devices I have connected and such. Having used Netgear routers in the past and for the price, I expected a lot more from these Orbi's, but was disappointed. ... show more

  • Great speed and multi-floor coverage, but annoying cloud management and extremely expensive.
Style: 2-Pack
Coverage and speed are really solid and linking the satellites is easy. Upsell and extra monthly fee for advanced security feels like a ridiculous money grab. Every vendor and manufacturer today wants to rope you into a SaaS monthly recurring revenue stream. At $800-$1200 for this system, it’s rather insulting to be pushed to spend another $120/year for feature that should be standard, or at least more than a 30 day trial. The local web interface hasn’t been updated or improved upon in years and like most consumer systems today, pushes your hard to use the mobile app with a Netgear account for setup and management. If you’re like me and don’t feel the need or desire to use the vendor’s cloud manage everything, you’re stuck with the very old local web interface. Some of the features you’d expect from such an expensive system are lacking. VLANs, easy IPv6, and more. I ended up putting these into AP only mode, which further limits the feature set, but lets me use a more advanced router to manage the security and features available on my network. Recommend for your mom and non-technical friends, but unless you find a Warehouse deal and intend to accept the limitations and still extremely high cost, there are cheaper options with nearly the same speed benefits. ... show more
