  • Expanding older WiFi
I am not a fan of buying used tech, but there was not a new option for my wifi system. Took a chance and got a good Orbi satellite. Set up was easy and system is functioning. Only complaint was the package needed packing material. Luckily, the satellite was robust and package didn’t get mishandled during transit. ... show more

  • Arrived missing parts.
We have an existing Orbi network and needed to expand our coverage. We purchased this, but what we received was the orbi unit, in a plastic bag closed with a sticker that had ‘new’ printed on it. No power supply, no manuals, no box, no protective packaging. I’m hoping this is an Amazon warehouse item that fell out of the box and the biggest piece was shipped to us. The alternative (and more likely, I think) is that it was a returned unit. Either way, it was an incomplete order - no power supply, no function. As usual, Amazon returns were painless, thus the ‘3’ rating. My experience with the original setup (I am an IT professional) is that the documentation was horrible, and flat wrong in several places, and the firmware painfully slow. It took - no kidding, I timed it - over 5 minutes for the satellites to link with the master. The setup app erred out 4 times and I had to restart everything to get past each error (each restart got me past each error). The colored indicator lights did not work as described, and have quit working all together now. The management application did not provide the information needed to set up the system - you have to log into the units web page for that. If there are any options for a firewall, I couldn’t find them. The range between units seems to max out at about 30’ - less if going through walls and floors. To get a signal to the basement, we had to position the satellites within 15’, which is absurdly close. Also, the signals appear highly directional, so shifting a unit on a shelf can break the connection. We tried a plug-in satellite, but it can’t be rotated to pick up other unit’s signals and additional clutter (cabinets, desks, furniture) that are typically at electrical outlet heights made the unit unusable for us. There is an de-featured Box option for network security. We already have a Box, and you can configure the unit to work with it (as a wireless unit only, not a router), though how is not in the docs, and the configuration app won’t let you tweak the settings necessary to do that. That said, once you get it working, it works well and has been solid for the last 2 weeks. It even recovered from a power outage, though it was painfully slow to boot (several ,minutes). The status LEDs would be nice, but apparently shut off forever once the setup is over (that from their tech support), which is a shame. Overall, if I hadn’t invested 5 hours in setting this up I would try a different brand. Mesh is a great way to manage networks, but this just doesn’t seem ready for prime time. ... show more

  • Software glitch requires setup special trick
I bought this add on satellite to help an area with weak signal in my house. Overall the Orbi system I’ve had is great for large house with a lot of solid walls and basement. ***to add a third satellite requires a special trick I found on a forum to add satellite. First you must unplug the other satellites or turn them off then pair the new satellite. After it pairs then plug in the prior satellites and magic it works perfect.****. I returned what I thought was defective satellite but probably was fine. Have set up two houses with Orbi router plus 2 satellites and never had to do this until adding this third one. Hope this note saves some else alot of frustration. Especially since netgear support follows the router not the satellite and mine was expired. ... show more

  • Easy Add-on to Existing System
I've owned my NetGear Orbi Mini 2-pack System (AC2200, RBK22) for about 3 1/2 years now. It came with a router and one satellite. It covered my 3200 sq. foot horseshoe shaped home fairly well. I put the router approx. in the center of the cross piece of the "horseshoe" and the satellite in the center of one horseshoe leg. That worked fairly well except that the far end of the other horseshoe leg without a satellite had a poor or nonexistent signal. So recently I added a wi-fi security camera outside in the far corner of that horseshoe leg without a satellite and of course there was no signal. So I finally added a second satellite to fix that problem and also cure my "dead zone" in that area. Adding the new satellite was easy using the NetGear Orbi App and my signal to the new camera and the former "dead zone" now show full bars coverage. I think the only negative was that the satellite was a pretty pricey compared to the cost of the original system. ... show more

  • So far, so good
Was a little apprehensive at first, but so far so good. Pretty much reset the satellite to factory settings and then paired it with my current Orbi router. Hoping the satellite doesn’t crap out on me.

  • Renewed
Although the description didn’t say it was renewed, should have known it was by the price. Didn’t arrive in the original box, just a flimsy plastic envelope. Looked like it had been dropped and scrape marks on it. No instructions so had to google. In any case, it did connect to my Orbi router and works perfectly as my second satellite. Entire home now has no dead spots. ... show more

  • App and support leaves a little to be desired, but overall, good.
App and support leaves a little to be desired, but overall, good. This system, with one additional satellite, covers my home pretty seamlessly and my detached 2-story garage, including the yard space between. Overall, I'm quite happy with the system. No more does wifi go down while microwaving a potato or popcorn; I wish that the sats would always connect to the primary router instead of another sat... BUT I understand that this is also the purpose of having a malleable mesh network. It goes where it must. We had one major issue with a particular weather station that I won't mention unparantherically (La Crosse) where it would not connect EVEN IF I ran the microwave. It requires 2.4. Perhaps, the system could have a way to force 2.4 instead of 5. Additionally, I occasionally try to stop the wifi to my daughters. Although the Disney Circle option is ok, it's not perfect, and it would be much better if the thing that the Orbi says it can do.... it would do. I cut the signal to a device and NEVER, not once has one of my kids come out of their room to complain about a lack of signal from the built in orbi cut off. Instead, there's no reaction at all. Therefore, I wonder if it works at all. ... show more
