  • Amazing Router
This device replaced a Nighthawk X6 - R8000 which was already working fine. I am not easily impressed with networking products but this router is different from anything I have seen in a while. This device has greater wifi range, much better control panel, an actual OS running things behind the scenes and blazing fast speeds! There is no comparison between this router and the previous X6. I even noticed this router has built-in fans to cool down the chipset if needed! But one of my favorite features of this router is its ability to draw a flow chart in real time via the dashboard of all the devices connected and if they are on WIFI or LAN. After these devices disconnect the router will remember them and add them to the flow chart as offline. You can pinpoint a device and determine if it is allowed, bandwidth allocation and more! Another feature is the Smart connect. Remember the older Netgear routers would have multiple WIFI SSIDs to connect? You can tell this router to combine them all into one SSID. The router will examine your device as it connects and determines what frequency whether it be 2.4 or 5. If you do not like the idea then you can also set the router to display multiple SSIDs like the older routers. Point is that this router gives you options and choices! I have combined this router with a Netgear CM600 modem, CAT-8 cables (overkill, I know. Cat-6 will work just as good), and a Netgear X10 Smart Switch and never looked back. This router is worth the money! ... show more

  • Endgame for Routers (at least for whats available today)
This router is simply amazing...lets see where to begin. First off from pulling it out the box you feel like you have a miniature Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk in your hands. Lets get the annoying part out of the way first...the price and the setup. The setup was quasi user friendly but the whole process was slow and sluggish. There were a couple of times I thought it was broken as it would me to click next and so I would only to be greeted by a "this page cannot be found screen". This happened so many times I almost did not make it through the install phase. Luckily I kept at it because wow...wow wow wow. It was a lot (i mean ALOT) for me to try to justify spending what I did for this router as the old router I had (a Nighthawk model as well) had only been like $100 and served me well for nearly 7 years. I know a lot of the feature inherently built into this XR700 are standard but they were new to me and I was blown away. To be fair I had ordered 3 other routers to benchmark against each other (TP Link Archer C5400x, Asus AX6000, and the Netgear Nighthawk AD7200) to find the best overall one. I compared QoS, ease of setup, user-"friendliness", signal strength, features, down & upload speeds. Setup: Covered above (TP Link Archer C5400x won this hands down) User Friendliness: All roughly about the same QoS/Prioritization: Hands down the XR700. You can set the bandwidth and upload speed prioritization with ease as well as select between an option of having the prioritization set to all the time, when needed, or off. I set the prioritization to my PC (as I stream on Twitch) and turned on 3 T.vs for streaming (1 in 4k), my wife's phone watching a youtube video, my phone watching a youtube video, my kid's PC running a game. My gaming stream resulted in 0 lag as well as 0 lag on any of the devices. While I understand the test is not the norm with all that stuff on simultaneously but I needed to test the prioritization capabilities under load Download Speed (mb/s): Roughly the same Upload Speed (mb/s): I tested all of the routers under the load/stress described above and the XR700 all the way. C5400X ranged between 7-15mb/s up, and the Asus and AD7200 were slightly better between 22-27 mb/s. The XR700 came in at a 37-39 mb/s (mainly due to the Qos/Prioritization) Signal Strength: All pretty much the same and very respectable (cover a home roughly 2500 sq ft across 2 levels) though the Archer C5400X held a very slight lead. If you have a larger home and find an area with space where you don't get adequate signal you can use a range extender with the XR700. For you that would be something to consider as it would be an additional cost but for me the range of the Wifi of the XR700 is perfect me regardless if I was inside or outside. Final Thoughts: This is an expensive router. For me and my needs it is unreal and well worth it...to the point I asked if it wanted to sleep in the bed with my wife and I as a reward and it politely said no as we had just met and it only puts out a signal on the first date...and put out a signal it did. Keep in mind the points I made above as all the routers I tested were inherently good routers it is just this router for my needs was the best. Understand what your needs are before buying something with this eye gouging price tag unless you truly need and will utilize all that it has to offer. ... show more

  • The ethernet cuts out during gaming disconnecting me from game
Despite having an Ethernet connection to the router, it has cut out during a game and disconnected me from the game, ruining the game, numerous times. I know it isn't an issue with the game servers, because I check the ethernet connection in windows 10 and it says it is disconnected. Then maybe ten seconds later it will say 'identifying' and then connected again. Its as if the cable was unplugged (but it isn't the cable). This never happened with the router I 'upgraded' to this one from. (Turns out it was a downgrade). Another bad thing, sometimes the 5ghz wifi just plain doesn't show up at all. The router's 2.4ghz signal always shows up. For an expensive gaming router, it sure does fail at the ONE thing it needs to do reliably- STAY CONNECTED TO THE GAME/internet. I also noticed the web interface is sluggish. It seems to take it a while to load the little applets in the duma os the router is running. I wait and wait for it to load to be able to see the information I want to see. And I have to disable my ad blocker plug in too. This router has a bunch of stuff you don't need, maybe that's why it fails to perform well at the basics. I also noticed that I cannot use my nintendo switch in my bathtub even though it is only 25 feet away wtih the router with just the bathroom wall between it. To be fair my other devices work fine in the bathtub, so I could be the fault of the Switch. The supposed game optimization, well just forget it because chances are your specific game will not be supported by Duma Os. So don't factor that into your purchasing decision at all. I will say the the automatic configuration and setup wizard is really really good. It automatically sensed my connection type, ppoe, and all I had to do was input my login info from my ISP. The best I've ever seen as far as a setup wizard goes. It also appears to have some really cool features such as a built in Plex server and USB drive support for file sharing. I didn't try really hard to get them to work but those didn't appear to work either. So basically for a few hundred bucks I have a router that disconnects randomly for no apparent reason and which sometimes the 5ghz band, doesn't even show up so I can connect to it at all and offers no apparent benefit for gaming whatsoever. I would pick a $60 linksys tomato router over this any day of the week. I tried several things to resolve the disconnecting issue (by the way I have a 100mbps fiber internet connection with very low ping) , resetting, updating firmware, factory reset, etc. I am switching back to something simple that is ultra reliable, I am going to try google wifi and just hook up a switch/hub to it for my ethernet devices. Update: I tried a google wifi point with an 8 port switch hooked up to it and the performance of internet page loading is a bit snappier. That is reason enough by itself to switch to a google wifi point. No waiting for applets to load on Duma Os either, everything is snappy and responding instantly within the phone app. If I ever have any connection issues like I did with the xr700 I will return and update this review but I highly doubt I will. Do yourself a favor, save 300 bucks and get a google wifi point with a switch for additional ethernet ports if you need more than one free. ... show more
