  • Wow - Blown away
Style: AX6000 WiFi 6 | 8 Streams
Don't waste your time getting the new AX (wifi 6) tech since its not readily available in devices they said. Don't spend the money cause its gonna be like a normal router for a couple of years until more are released. Let me tell you - ignore that. This is a BEAST. I spent 3+ weeks trying out different solutions on wifi. I tried Orbi mesh. While that is a good product, I am not really in need of a mesh. Speeds averaged 460-525 Mbps. (I tested at different times of day but same time frames with other products). I tried the XR500 Nighthawk that is one of the highest rated devices with DumaOS. So many issues that I was losing my mind. I tried several fixes. Separate the bands, channels, etc. My security cams were going offline every 30 mins or so for at least 15. I was so fed up with trying to trouble shoot the device. My speeds were 580 - 670 Mbps with it which I did enjoy. But speed is only useful if its actually CONNECTED to the devices. Last ditch effort I tried this router. The RAX80 and holy moly. Plugged in, used the mobile app and was up within 5 mins. Every device attached with no issues. No disconnects after multiple days use. Speed improvement on every item. I have 38 devices accessing my wifi as part of the smart home. This monster just cranks it out. No problems at all. My speed on several tests as compared to the same day/ time as the ones above - 830-960 Mbps I am not sure why its such a huge improvement but it is. I cannot say enough good things about this router. Not only is is a monster with handling speeds and multiple devices - just look at it. It is not one you want to hide. You want to show this baby off. Several people have asked me what the space ship is. This thing went from being in an Amazon box to installed and cranking out wifi / lan within 10 minutes and NOT a single drop of signal. I am future proof as well. So I say if you can afford it, do not hesitate. You will really like it. EDIT: After 2 months this router is still the best one I've ever seen. Still getting top level speeds right at a gig. I've got 42 devices attached to it (smart home) and it doesn't even cough. I rarely am this surprised. This router is still #1 in everything I tried! ... show more

  • No buffering, no weak wifi signal, easy interface and stronge security. Most important crazy fast!!!
Style: AX6000 WiFi 6 | 8 Streams
In my house I have 5 gamers 3 play WoW, 1 plays Overwatch and 1 plays some flight and tank battle game. I am running Gig Internet and also watch Nutflix, Amazon and a few others. Before I got the Nighthawk I was running into buffering issues daily, Verizon was no help in resolving the problem. After getting the Nighthawk, buffering was no longer an issue. One of my boys is a hardcore streamer and does that for 10 to 12 hours a day and still no issues when all 5 of us are playing something. Security is also a concern and the Nighthawk has that covered as well. Very easy to manage your network and activate very strong signal encryption and security if you want. Oh and the signal strength is crazy good now, I actually get full bars on my phone when I am out back of the house and about 200 feet away. Price wise, it is well worth the cost if you have heavy users in the house. ... show more

  • Great router unless you need support or to claim warranty
Style: AX6000 WiFi 6 | 8 Streams
I want to start with Customer Service as that is my primary concern. My router started malfunctioning about 5 months after getting it. Dozens of calls to support have resulted in nothing but frustration as they won't help, they are rude and refuse to replace the unit despite it dropping packets and having massive latency (over 600ms) both over WiFi and Ethernet, even directly after a factory reset with no special settings from all devices and in multiple locations/houses. I have always purchased and recommended my customers buy Netgear products because warranty is usually really easy to deal with, but that apparently is no longer the case. In fact, customer support is so inept, I may as well be talking to my 85 year old Grandmother, because she would probably understand things more than they are capable of doing. I have invested over 10 hours troubleshooting sporadic latency and packet loss issues and have reduced the amount of devices to ensure it's not issues in my house. I even went as far as to take this router to 2 different houses to see if I'd get similar results in other locations and I did. I also found that without an ISP attached at all (nothing in WAN port) that latency/packet loss issues remain. I clearly have a faulty unit, but Netgear refuses to honor their warranty on a nearly $400 router that is less than a year old. I am no longer doing business with Netgear as a result and will ensure that all my customers no longer use their products either. My IT company has elected to find a better company to do business with as a result of my ongoing struggles to get Netgear to honor their warranty, which clearly is meaningless. Be warned - if you have issues, you'll be out of luck and have to go spend hundreds of dollars to replace their equipment. For what it's worth, as long as the unit isn't faulty it has excellent range and speed over WiFi-6/Wireless-AX, but my packet lass has been a sporadic issues since about month 3 and and I'm not the only one having this issue. No matter what settings I try to change and move around, nothing fixes it permanently. Sometimes reboot helps for about 10 minutes, but ultimately this thing is garbage and better units exist for the same or less price. ... show more

  • Extremely easy setup and great wifi coverage
Style: AX6000 WiFi 6 | 8 Streams
The Nighthawk AX8 WiFi router was extremely easy to setup using the Nighthawk app on my phone. I was up and running in less than 10 minutes with most of that time being spent on a firmware update. Once the router was configured with the SSID that I had used on my previous router, all my devices reconnected to the internet with one difference: the signal strength was significantly better than my previous router as I moved farther from the AX8. There have been no bad surprises like network drops and having to reboot often. The Nighthawk AX8 is a solid WiFi router that I would recommend to anyone who needs to connect a lot of devices and needs coverage for a 3000 square foot multilevel home. After using now for more than an month I am very pleased. The router has not required a single reset since it was setup. I have 6 Amazon Echo devices throughout my house and had often experienced "cannot connect" messages several times per week with my previous router. Since installing the Nighthawk I have had NO connection issues. This is by far the best router that I have ever owned. ... show more

  • High-tech and easy to use, decent signal, weird hardware
Style: AX6000 WiFi 6 | 8 Streams
NOTE: Since Amazon lists the AX8 and AX12 as one product, this review covers both in one. This may help you for comparison. It's October 2019 and I've now had the pleasure of working with both an AX8 and an AX12. Both represent a new standard for WiFi called "Version 6" that should change everything. It's designed for larger spaces, stronger signals, higher speed and more importantly taking the "Internet of Things" idea into account and handling lots of small-scale devices in the home. While my experience with the AX8 was pretty good, it didn't quite match up to my expectations. I was surprised to find the XR450 to be a close contender--it's much less expensive but older and more technically complex than the AX8, so depending how knowledgeable you are, the AX8 might be the easier choice. It's also possible that the AX8 will improve down the road with a firmware update or two. Despite the very close similarities to the AX12 (which has one more set of antennas), I did find the AX12 to be a very good router--though not significatnly better than the AX8 or XR450; thus a huge drawback to it is the Ferrari-level price point. I bought the AX8 for my father's house. He was using a Netgear R6300 router with a Netgear EX7500 extender. He has a large single-story home, over 3,000 sq ft, with high ceilings and a large outdoor space and the R6300 & extender system was starting to drop out a lot more. His ISP requires him to put the router in a far corner of the home, so we needed strong coverage to get around concrete walls and travel all the way to the opposite corner of the house. The AX8 was extremely easy to set up, even though I needed to tell it to take the same name and password as my father's old system to make things easier on him this wasn't hard to do at all. We were ready to rock in minutes. The AX12 was a little more flaky about this, with the Router and the instructions both saying I should use the Netgear Nighthawk app on a mobile device to set up the Router. That went well until it hung on the last step and I had to fall back on the traditional route of using "routerlogin.net" on a PC, start over from scratch, and it was as easy as the AX8. The AX12 is in a two-story 3,000sq. ft home on the top floor, and the ground floor is concrete walls, the bane of Wi-Fi. One strange thing about the hardware though: the "wings" that make up the antennas need to be snapped onto the body of the router, upright. It's not hard to do, but you do have to pay attention and make sure everything is lined up, then push down pretty hard to get the "wings" to click into place. Despite that, I found they kept detaching themselves if anyone picked up the router or moved it. This doesn't affect performance but it's worth noting when you put together or handle the device. For both the AX8 and the AX12, it was strange that one "wing" would clip into place and the other wouldn't...but both slip right back out again at the slightest touch. I also didn't see a wall-mount capability in the AX8, but I did have it in the AX12. This can be a problem for newer homes like mine where the Internet is pre-built into a utility panel that's on one wall of a small, tight space. The AX12 is for me, and wall-mounting was relatively easy. One caveat to be aware of: the wall-mount pegs/screws you use will need to stick out from the wall a bit because the router sits atop thick rubber feet--you need the screws to reach deeper towards the mounting holes to properly fit. These feet also make it nearly impossible to see where the holes are and line them up, so I had to use my fingertips to feel for it and fumble it into place. Once all was up and running, I wandered around with the Netgear mobile app testing signal strength. For the AX8 I had some dropouts I didn't expect and the range only went a little farther than the much-older R6300. That said, the coverage still works for most of my parents' home and was much more stable. One weird thing happened that may only affect Xfinity customers: we'd had Xfinity disable their built-in Wi-Fi years ago. After connecting the X8, the Xfinity modem/router detected the AX8, read the network name/password, turned its WiFi back on and started broadcasting itself with the exact same name & password, creating a confusing mess of two identical networks broadcasting side by side and fighting with each other. I had to get Xfinity tech support to work with me to get their WiFi turned off again. I've never seen this happen before, but keep it in mind if you suddenly start to have your new router disconnect you or refuse to let you through to the Internet--check your ISP's modem/router to be sure their Wi-Fi isn't turned on. For the AX12, I found the coverage to be just as good as the XR450 but the speeds to be a bit better. For both, the Admin console is more like your traditional routers: no DumaOS. I liked the look and feel of DumaOS, but despite being a gamer I didn't end up needing the granular device-level traffic controls, so I don't mind that it's missing here. Overall, the AX series are supposed to be a big step forward for Wi-Fi. If you're on a router that's problematic and/or 3 years old or more, I'd suggest upgrading. However, it's only the highest bandwidth consumers that will see a big difference between the AX series and the cheaper XR series. XRs actually offer more tweaking capability while AX is more user-friendly. ... show more

  • Thought i was having issues, but it was the cable modem Thought i was having issues, but it was the cable modem
Style: AX6000 WiFi 6 | 8 Streams
I have 1024mbps downstream and 42mbps upstream service from Xfinity. Within 24hrs of a reboot the routers connection drops to 12mbps-20mbps downstream. If I reboot it, it's back to full speed again. WIFI coverage seems great in my two story home, but when your connection to the internet is slowed to a fraction of what it should be it isn't much help. I have a netgear 1150V cable modem running LACP to the router (two 1G connections bonded together). The pics are from the routers app interface itself, not a speed test running on a device somewhere else on the network. I have the latest firmware installed. I love some of the features of the router, WAN and LAN link aggregation (LACP) allows you to bond two 1G connections together to double your bandwidth. I run LACP to the modem and also to a Cisco switch on the LAN side. I'll update if there are any new developments. **update 12/29** Rolled back to fw 201.0.1.64 (router reports a newer version available, but this is newest on the site.) And reduced MTU to 1492, Conducted 30/30/30 reset. Router seems to be holding steady at 1G+ speeds so far. If it remains stable, I'll update my product rating. The updated speed test screencap is during busy weekend traffic use with family streaming-gaming, but network is looking happy, stable and fast. **update 1/6/2020** Turns out my speed issue is in regards to the netgear CM1150V cable modem. Your FW version of the cable modem is dependent on your ISP (Xfinity in my case) pushing out the latest FW update. Current code has issue with WAN LACP connections that drop speed to a fraction of the normal downstream speed. Netgear has supplied the fix, just waiting on Xfinity to deploy it. ... show more

  • Should I upgrade (less then technical explanation)
Style: AX6000 WiFi 6 | 8 Streams
I have had the same Netgear router for... well... ever. Still kicking after almost 10 years. But I noticed that the speed was getting bogged down more and more. When I first got the old router I had maybe 6 devices connected to the system at once. Now I have 6 Alexa devices alone hooked to my network at once (hello wiretap) not to mention the myriad of other devices and conveniences hooked up to my home network. The old router needed retirement. Enter the Netgear Nighthawk AX8. After a bunch of research and trying to make sense of a bunch of terminologies I think I understood I decided to go with the AX8. I decided this based on the technical advantage that it looked like half of a Tie fighter from Star Wars. Seriously though. The advances that are available in Wi-Fi 6 make a great improvement even in devices that are not at Wi-Fi 6. My internal network speeds are greatly improved and I don't experience any issues even with the myriad of convenient home devices I continue to install. Installation was very easy through the app. Is this the router for you? I would say it depends on how many devices you have in your home. Be honest with yourself. The first step in fixing a problem is admitting you have one. How future proof do you want your home network to be? I am hoping I can get another ten years out of this router (maybe I should upgrade sooner though). Also, cost, there are lower tears in the Nighthawk line that can save you some money. I did not think the tradeoff in internal hardware was worth the savings so I went with the AX8. ... show more

  • Doesn’t function as expected, support is weak - Updated
Style: AX6000 WiFi 6 | 8 Streams
Setup is simple if you use the phone application. However, my router keeps dropping all the physically connected devices intermittently and does not provide faster speeds than 200mbps on WiFi. When I turn my providers AP back on and test, I get over 500mbps. As of last night, it is now dropping WiFi devices too and won’t exceed .45mbps. I initially used chat support via iPhone app but when I attempted to gather firmware version the app crashed and dropped my session. Support just asks me the firmware version (which they should know it’s up to date since the phone app checks for updates) and to reset it. Biggest waste of money in a long time. No more netgear. Updated 11/28/2019 I just got off the phone with them. The ticket I created a few days ago which indicated that my speed kept decreasing (started at 200Mbps and slowly decreased to .46Mbps in the last few days). Via email, they decided to send me a new unit. Yesterday afternoon, they sent me an email urgently asking that I call them. I thought it was for an address but when I called they wanted to work with me to see if they can resolve the issue. Being in IT for 20+ years, my heart sank and I was waiting for them to ask me to reboot it, factory reset it, etc. which is what I had already done trying to resolve issue myself. I was surprised when the tech knew exactly what needed to be done. Change the MTU to 1492, flip the 5g to channel 128 and back level the firmware. IT WORKED (to a point). The speeds advertised is no where close to what the device can do but 500Mbps will do for me. Keeping my fingers crossed. Updated 12/25/2019 - Well, there she blows again. It keeps dropping all my wireless connections and support has ended. The firmware is still at the prior version (Per last post) and I've tried changing the channels with the same result. I have to admit that it worked fantastic after I called them, but I don't think an AP should have to be reconfigured every month in order to perform to only a percentage (albeit not horrible percentage) of its advertised stats. ... show more
