  • Larger selection of coffee styles and cup sizes with Vertuo Nespresso coffee machine
If you are familiar with the thimble-sized Nespresso capsules (found now in nearly every higher end hotel room) , the newer Vertuo capsule is larger and allows the machine to make anything from a Ristretto to a full mug of coffee or iced coffee. It will also do an 18oz "pour-over" and there is an accessory carafe set Carafe Set: The official carafe is a 20.6 fl oz, double-walled glass container with a silicone lid and stirrer. It is not included with the unit. For any of the coffees, small or large, the Vertuo capsule determines the volume to be dispensed (there looks to be a barcode around the crimp of the seal on the capsule.) The machine itself is a dense resin (relatively heavy) with a removeable reservoir on the back. There is no LED display; the operation is via a button on the top. It turns orange for brewing, and if double-tapped, it's blue, indicating restricted volume for iced coffee (hence, the blue color.) What comes with the Next unit: Aeroccino milk foamer (separate unit) A platform with a perforated disk which can be moved up or down a slot for large mug to small espresso demitasse. Reservoir (fits on back of the machine) The machine itself. The name and volume of the coffee is on the pods so you read the volume before choosing your platform height and cup. We chose to test the Decaf Melozio (a blend of South American coffees) that brews up 7.7oz. Brewing: Open the lid, pop in your capsule, flat side up. Close the lid and move the lock lever to the left. Press the button one time. The brew has a lot of "crema" and takes a minute or two. The result was a hot, but not blisteringly hot cup of decent coffee. When complete, when you open the lid, the machine cutely flips the used capsule into a hole in back of the holder and there is a side compartment to dispose of them. Value: The capsules will run you more than the originals, and about the same as the standard roast medium black coffee at the donut shop or hamburger joint with yellow arches. The machine itself is well made and versatile: you'll be able to make espresso, cappuccino, lungo, straight up brewed coffee or even "pour-over." Pros: Versatile volumes of one-shot coffees Something for everyone, from espresso to single-origin to flavored to decaf. Recyclable capsules. Fast single shot Good quality coffees Mindless brewing; takes almost no thought other than reading your capsule and matching to the cup size. If you are really bleary in the morning before your first cup, you just buy ONE kind of capsule and you'll be good to go. Cons: The capsules are not as cheap as brewing your own coffee in a paper filter pouring over your hot water, or setting up your Mister Caw-fee. You have to read those capsules if you have a variety pack. The reservoir is not so large so you will have to keep it topped off if you make many cups during the day. The milk frother is separate. Summary: Versatile for a single-shot machine. Easy to use. Makes a variety of coffee styles and sizes. ... show more

  • Decent espresso for convenience
This Nespresso Vertuo Next comes with the Nespresso machine, a milk frother, and a bunch of pods to try out different flavors and styles of the nespresso. The setup was extremely easy to get started - all I had to do was add water to the tank in the back and press the button a few times to do an initial cleaning cycle. I did find this part just a bit annoying since I couldn't fit a standard carafe under it and ended up using a giant bowl that I had lying around instead. Once done though, I was ready to start testing the coffee and seeing how I liked it. Starting first with the nespresso itself, it takes in these pods that are exclusive to these machines and each of the pods have a different sizing to them - some of one shot espresso, others are two shots, some are a coffee cup, etc. There's a lot of variety with this and I thought that was pretty cool. They came with a bunch of the different varieties for me to try which was nice but the pricing on these pods are actually kind of high for the already expensive machine. I realized after doing some research that this is just a slightly bigger version of the already existing Nespresso Vertuo Next (sans premium) which costs 120 at the time of this review while this one costs almost double for just a larger tank/disposal pods storage. However the number one thing they do sell is convenience here - which I will admit making an espresso with these are way easier than measuring and grinding beans, tamping, and putting it into an espresso machine if you don't know how to do it which is something I've struggled a lot with in the past. Whether that tastes better to you or the nespresso tastes better is a bit of a subjective matter though I think this is where convenience over taste wins, especially if we include the frother. One thing I did find a bit annoying was when initially putting the pod in, the machine takes a bit to get ready. There's a blinking light to indicate that it isn't ready - and when it is ready the light turns solid. I've found this to take about a minute or so, so it's probably better to setup your pod initially first if you don't want to wait. The frother is very simple and easy to use. It comes with a magnetic attachment on the inside with a detachable whisk for smoother less frothy milk. The instructions for this thing could be improved though - it seems with the whisk you should only fill up to the first bottom line in the frother or else it'd overflow, while the second is for smoother without the whisk milk. I only really have on hand oat milk so that's all I tested with but it made great frothy milk for the espresso I made with the nespresso. It's easy to wash and because of the magnetic attachment you don't have to worry about it falling out of the frother when washing which is nice. Overall, I think this is the perfect combination for those not wanting to go too deep into making coffee but still wanting decent espresso and a frother for different types of coffee. The nespresso can make all sorts of coffee though in my opinion my standard drip coffee tastes better than the pod ones if you wanted to use it for normal drip. It's an okay price point for getting your own espresso but the pods definitely are a little pricier than I expected. However the convenience of this combo is great for those not wanting to go through the entire espresso machine coffee making process. ... show more
