  • Was skeptical, ended up loving it!
Platform: PC Download Edition: Standard
Hi all, like many of the reviewers I'm a huge ND games fan, playing all of them over and over again since I was a kid. After waiting 5 years for Midnight in Salem and seeing all of the negative reviews, I had put off playing this game until I received it as a gift. I can say that I was pleasantly surprised - I had a GREAT experience with the game and am looking forward to (hopefully) new installments in the future! I think one of the key things is to go in with the proper expectations. If you're a die-hard ND game fan and are expecting a game play similar to the previous products, then this will let you down. But if you go in knowing that they're going for something different here, then you can enjoy the product for what it is rather than comparing it to what it isn't. One important note: I played this on a desktop gaming PC with a separate mouse and mouse pad. This definitely helped with the new way you need to move about in the game (ie, looking up/down, rotating items), so if you're wanting to play this on a laptop, I'd consider buying a USB mouse. Trying to do these more complicated movements using a laptop track pad probably isn't ideal, and will probably frustrate you as you play. Some specific notes: There is a lot more dialogue in this game than previous games, which I personally liked. I thought it laid out the story well, pulled you in, and you got to know several characters more intimately. On the note of the dialogue, I thought the voice actors were much better than previous ND games, though other reviews have noted the opposite. I thought the characters were more expressive, and I appreciated the younger voice for Nancy and some of the other characters. There were fewer puzzles than previous games, but to me they were creative and engaging, and several were different from what we have seen previously. I would have preferred a bit more sleuthing/snooping of the suspect's spaces when they were out, but otherwise I was happy with the balance of puzzles and dialogue. The graphics were definitely clunky (jerky movements; dialogue not always matching up; characters seemed to float and at times were too small for their environments; hard to rotate some items/dials; navigating your environment had to be done in a certain way), and there are definitely improvements that need to be made here. However, these aspects didn't deter me from the game in general, and I still had a 5 star experience even with these issues. TL;DR: Overall I appreciated the new take on the ND game with more (and in my opinion, better) storytelling. The game could be improved with less clunky graphics and some more puzzles/snooping. Overall, 5/5 and I'm looking forward to future installments! ... show more

  • They should have never changed things.....
Platform: PC Download Edition: Standard
First and foremost they should have never changed things if they couldn't do it right. I have played EVERY single Nancy Drew game. I have them all. This was the only one I did not have. I heard such awful things I decided to wait to get it cheaper as a digital copy. What a waste of money. They changed things on this game to make it "better", it is waaaay worse. I started playing these games for something engaging to do with my kids years ago. Not just a shoot it, kill it game. But puzzles and thinking, yet still a game so they see it as such. Now my kids are much older but strangely still ask me to spend a day playing a Nancy Drew game. They say it reminds them of their childhood. It is a "comfort zone" thing. Nostalgia. They will spend the whole day down with me and not up in their rooms. Get a few snacks and just watch me play. They are both teenagers now. High school and college. We ALL hated this game. The 3-D graphics look like something from the late 90's where they were just learning about 3-D. The movements my daughter called "time to hold the imaginary baby" because they look like they are holding an invisible baby as they talk. I have NEVER had such a hard time just moving around in a Nancy Drew game. It was frustrating just to "walk" forward as the mouse area for walking would have you not moving or clicking on the wrong area to move and you go in circles. The introduction of a "follower" for like 90% of the game had you turning around and like "oh hello, can I please move around you now". When you "pan" to "look" around for clues you end up with a view straight up your "follower's" butt. Then there is the dialogue.... ugggggghhhh.... too much nonsensical dialogue and not enough puzzles. There are very few puzzles in this. They mostly threw some in at the end. The rest of the game is just endless dialogue, and at the worst times... like really.. we are having this conversation now.. will you just shut up???! Voice actors weren't great either. Was not into the new Drew voice actor. This was by FAR our least favorite Drew game and like I said.. we have played them all.. I wish I had not wasted the money on it. Myself and the kids just hated it. I really hope they go back to the classic Drew games. So much fun solving puzzles in the old games, I never cared that they weren't 3-D. Don't waste your money people. You will probably regret spending a cent on this game. My opinion. ... show more

  • Immersive Graphics
Platform: PC Download Edition: Standard
Ideally, virtual reality is what I would prefer in a video game; to be put in the story, with problem solving being only part of it. The graphics are in HD up to 4K, with very good environment with some sounds and movement; place movement during the game is sometimes a jump (music is good but needs control in background {Oops! Has it in Advanced Settings further down.), characters good but with little movement (enough, with swaying, body language, talking, so that they don't look like paper dolls), except "You" as "Hers Truly" moving through it with her associate Dierdre, often "side by side".(likeable character) The cut scenes make the experience more fun. My computer has low graphics, so my choices of games are limited, (In this game, under settings, set low, at 1920 x 1080, still full screen on my 4K monitor when aspect ratio is set at 16:9). Overall, my display and this game give me a great visual experience. (It is using the "Unity" platform, one of the new 3D engines. I have seen great examples in "Unreal Engine".) I prefer games like this anyway with the personality interaction stories, including "Syberia" and the Agatha Cristae story "...And Then There Were None", though I always need help with walkthroughs. I would like more like this, if it is time and cost effective. ... show more
