Description

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • LONGLISTED FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE • A “masterly” (The New York Times, Editors’ Choice), “riveting” (The Atlantic) novel of friendship, family, and the unthinkable realities of exile, from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Return “A profound celebration of the sustaining power of friendship, of the ways we mold ourselves against the indentations of those few people whom fate presses against us.”—The Washington Post ONE OF THE WASHINGTON POST AND PUBLISHER WEEKLY’S TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR • A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, Time, NPR, BookPage WINNER OF THE ORWELL PRIZE FOR POLITICAL FICTION • LONGLISTED FOR THE ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE IN FICTION AND THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD One evening, as a young boy growing up in Benghazi, Khaled hears a bizarre short story read aloud on the radio, about a man being eaten alive by a cat, and has the sense that his life has been changed forever. Obsessed by the power of those words—and by their enigmatic author, Hosam Zowa—Khaled eventually embarks on a journey that will take him far from home, to pursue a life of the mind at the University of Edinburgh. There, thrust into an open society that is miles away from the world he knew in Libya, Khaled begins to change. He attends a protest against the Qaddafi regime in London, only to watch it explode into tragedy. In a flash, Khaled finds himself injured, clinging to life, unable to leave Britain, much less return to the country of his birth. To even tell his mother and father back home what he has done, on tapped phone lines, would expose them to danger. When a chance encounter in a hotel brings Khaled face-to-face with Hosam Zowa, the author of the fateful short story, he is subsumed into the deepest friendship of his life. It is a friendship that not only sustains him but eventually forces him, as the Arab Spring erupts, to confront agonizing tensions between revolution and safety, family and exile, and how to define his own sense of self against those closest to him. A devastating meditation on friendship and family, and the ways in which time tests—and frays—those bonds, My Friends is an achingly beautiful work of literature by an author working at the peak of his powers. • A deep must read
This is an incredible novel. The writing is unique and beautiful with every sentence carrying weight. The story itself is deep and emotional, yet doesn't leave you feeling blue. Recommending this to everyone regardless of whether you're familiar with Arab literature. Also, a phenomenal depiction of settings, ... show more

  • A Treatise on Friendship and How They Are the Ties that Bind
Truly a great novel about the experience of living your life in a country outside your motherland, and how that can be compounded by things like war and trauma. Matar paints a lovely picture on how friendship, especially among the male characters of the novel, can both challenge us and, in a way, keep us whole in moments when we are losing ourselves. MY FRIENDS gives of a peek into the everyday life of Khaled, a Libyan man whose unfortunate experience in London leads him down on a path of unimaginable conflict. As Khaled’s life with friends Mustafa and, later, Hosam, evolve, we’re provided with beautiful descriptions about love, friendship, community, and, even more importantly, family, and how people are capable of becoming your home away from home. ... show more

  • A stirring narrative of a life shaped by trauma
Khaled begins his novel at the end, as he is left by his dearest friend, Hosam, a writer on his way to the US to start anew. The bulk of the novel is Khaled’s story: leaving Libya at 18 (in 1984) to study in Edinburgh, going to London with his friend Mustafah to participate in an anti Gaddafi rally, being shot and nearly killed, and living forever after trying to reconcile himself to his fate and to the person he has become, while his friends eventually return to Libya to help depose Gaddafi in 2011. Matar’s writing is gorgeous, and the study of trauma deep and unsettling. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Poignant and beautifully written
This is an exquisite depiction of life in exile, the meaning of family, friendship, love, loyalty and so much more.

  • very much worth reading
Although Matar is occasionally long-winded or pretentious, he also beautifully conveys the emotions and misunderstandings and love that tie friends together--even in difficult and dangerous political times. He astutely states, "...we ask of writers what we ask of our closest friends: to help us mediate and interpret the world." He gives us that gift here. ... show more

  • A POETICALLY WRITTEN BEAUTIFUL STORY
The imagery and imaginative skills of Matar are unparalleled. I found the last part of the book describing his friend’s involvement in the rebellion that overthrew Qaddafi not nearly as interesting both as style and content.

  • Know the genre
Thank you Random House Publishing Group - Random House | Random House for allowing me to read and review My Friends on NetGalley. Published: 01/09/24 Stars: 2.5 Underwhelmed. Recently I have discovered Literary Fiction is a complicated genre for me. My Friends solidified my findings. This story is layered from one perspective. My problem: the author expected me to know too much. No explanations were given for thoughts, patterns, or fears. The main character was afraid of every one. And, once again a cultural story where disappointing parents is the root of all evil. The child -- parent relationship has no age cap. Khaled complicates his own life. Again, as many times in this genre, I didn't connect. There is a story here: however, I didn't find enough of it. I wish you well with it. ... show more
