Recommended. Works quite nicely. I tried to make one of these for myself with large pipe and pipe caps - do NOT recommend doing that. The pipe cap simply broke and my homemade gadget was probably dangerous. Instead, I strongly recommend buying one of these. It is tough and a lot safer. Can drive in posts that are tall or short with it.

I live in downeast Maine known for it’s rocky “ledge” terrain and my yard is no exception, plus the area where I wanted to put fencing had a deep gravel base of 8”-10”, which I shoveled away when ramming my 6’ metal posts. The 12lb rammer was not too heavy for me to manage and plenty heavy to drive the posts by just dropping it as dead weight, with just a little bit of help from me. I suggest plugging your ears, there were a few times the metal-on-metal rang my ears pretty bad, borderline painful where I winced a few times. Really ear plugs should be recommended when using. Your head is so close to the sound. TIP: Slide the rammer over your metal post when its laying on the ground, then stand it up…no lifting up and over the top needed. TIP: HOT metal! if you need to take a break for any amount of time, don’t forget to put it in the shade. I picked it up after it was laying in full sun dor a while and burned my hands!
