  • Smaller, easier to pack, good for solo
Style: 1.0L
This unit fits easily in my pack. Small isobutane canister fits neatly inside with stove, lightweight and great for one. Can easily make coffee for two.

  • Optimized for what it is intended to do!
Style: 1.7L
HOW I USE IT: boiling water ONLY. CONS: pot is made of aluminum with a surface coating, no insulation on the pot. PROS: fuel efficient, resistant to inclement weather like wind and rain, has a gas regulator, boils water quickly and reliably, everything is self-nesting with some extra room, sturdy handle, light weight enough for me. The aluminum pot is the only thing I don't like about the MSR Rocket Stove. I do not trust surface coatings. All of my other cookware is stainless steel - I use a Toaks titanium [long] spoon, Zebra stainless steel pot (I love it, but don't pack it when carrying the MSR Rocket Stove), and a no-name stainless steel cup. This stove system has traveled with me from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast... and back... and back. I travel a lot! I'm not sure of the highest elevation that I've used it, but I've been through the Rockies and Appalachians (not mountain climbing, though). I've used in temperatures as low as about 15 F (-9.4 C). I took an interest in the MSR Reactor Stove because I was looking for something fuel efficient and effective at boiling water for hiking meals in a bag, instant coffee, hot chocolate, water purification, snow melting, and other "just add hot water" meals. I couldn't find anything that fit the design and efficiency constraints that I had in mind. So, I endeavored to build my own. While researching radiant ceramic burners (much like a catalytic converter on your car), I found a YouTube video of someone explaining the design and engineering of the MSR Reactor Stove. Two years later, I bought one, and I haven't been diappointed one bit. The design makes it incredibly efficient, which will save fuel, money, time, and weight. The design protects the heat source from the wind, optimizes heat transfer with increased surface area under the pot along with a protected pathway for radiant and convected heat, and creates a very fuel-efficient, high-BTU heat source. Open-flame stoves are a nostalgic novelty, now. Unless you really want to see that flame under your pot, there's no need for it. I have never tried the Windburner or a JetBoil, so I can't speak with personal experience about those in comparison. However, I've seen them in action and talked to their owners. And, it seems to me that what's ubiquitous is their desire for a smaller system with less internal capacity and more convenient packing dimensions. What I can say is, my MSR Reactor Stove has never failed me, it's undoubtedly the fastest stove that I've owned, and people love to ask about it, watch it work, and give it a try. If you have thought about what cook system you want, researched and compared various stoves and pots and "systems," and you are still on the fence about trying the MSR Reactor Stove, buy it. If the MSR Reactor Stove has made it to your final 2 or 3 cook systems that you are considering, buy it. When you start splitting hairs and thinking long about the pros and cons of the MSR Reactor Stove compared to another stove, buy the MSR Reactor Stove. If you absolutely want the lightest cook system that you can get, forget about buying a cook system and simply go on a diet during your hike. Best of luck. I hope you will like your MSR Reactor Stove as much as I like mine. ... show more

  • Best Stove I've ever owned
Style: 1.7L
My maiden voyage with this stove was a July 2015, seven day trip on the High Sierra Trail with 5 men. It works fine at 12k feet and in windy conditions too. It boils ice cold river water (1.7 liters) in about 2.5 minutes. The Reactor was a huge hit on this trip. Weight on this stove is not an issue. It is expedition grade and can serve several people well, or even just a couple people. My other stove is an MSR XGK liquid fuel, which has served me well for 20 years. The Reactor is my first gas stove. No going back now, this thing rules. This stove is painless, no moving parts really, nothing to prime or clean, and is a super neat bit of kit. We even figured out how to "cook" fish by building a rock wall around the stove (that was higher than the stovetop) and placing the pan with the fish on the top of the wall, instead of on the stove itself. I really wish MSR would make a collar to create some separation between the burner and the cooking surface for this type of frying. We also made quesadillas in the pan, but you better watch it carefully because it will burn things fast. Though this model is not really designed for more than just boiling water, which it does like nobody's business, we made it work for cooking fish and tortillas stuffed with cheese and breakfast scramble. Just don't take your eye off the pan. ... show more

  • The Nuclear Option
Style: 1.7L
With a name like reactor it is no surprise this thing gets hot! Boils water quickly at just over 3 minutes for 1 liter (at sea level). Also, like other kinds of “reactors” incredibly expensive for what it does. Boils water. That’s it. While this baby isn’t propelling a turbine to produce overpriced electricity, it is putting out a powerful ball of heat that gets the incorporated pot boiling hot in minutes. The 1.7 liter pot is actually a little deceptive as the pot has to be filled almost to the brim to achieve this measurement. It’s really a 1.5 liter pot. Once optimum temperature is achieved water boils fast and starts spilling over the sides immediately so it’s best not to fill too full. Great design though. There is no temperature control however. It’s either high or off. Forget about simmering or cooking with this stove. It’s designed to boil water quickly and it does just that. As for noise. It’s relatively quiet. Looks pretty cool and the compact size will beat most cook sets as far as space-saving and weight. Pricey but it does do the job without any radioactive waste to boot! ... show more
